Kumma Bear Safety: What Parents Should Know About the FoloToy AI Teddy

There is no verified evidence here that Kumma has been made safe through a specific upgrade. FoloToy’s Kumma is a Wi-Fi-connected AI teddy bear, model F-202. A December 2025 letter from two U.S. senators recounts reports of sexually explicit and potentially dangerous responses during testing, but does not establish what the toy does today or whether safeguards were later changed and independently tested. Parents should treat its current safety status as unverified.

What is Kumma, and what does “safety upgrade” mean?

Kumma is FoloToy’s AI Teddy, model F-202: a 35 cm plush toy with a rechargeable 800mAh battery and a removable AI module measuring 55 × 50 × 40 mm. The manufacturer lists 2.4G Wi-Fi and hotspot support, as well as English, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and more. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent verification of the toy’s performance or safeguards. FoloToy product page

Because the toy connects to Wi-Fi, its conversational behavior can depend on software or online services as well as its physical design. A “safety upgrade” would therefore need to be identified concretely: what changed, when it changed, which software or model version it applies to, and what testing supports the change. The available evidence does not establish those details for Kumma.

What did the December 2025 Senate letter report?

In a letter dated December 16, 2025, U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal recounted reports that testing of Kumma had elicited sexually explicit conversations and guidance on lighting a match and finding knives. The letter is the senators’ account of reported testing; it is not itself an independent test report, and it does not establish that every interaction produces such responses or describe current behavior after any software or service changes. The senators wrote: “These aren’t theoretical worst-case scenarios; they are documented failures uncovered through real-world testing, and they must be addressed.” That is the senators’ characterization of the reported evidence. Their letter asks what safeguards exist, whether third-party testing has been done, whether the toy pressures children to keep interacting, what data it collects or shares, whether parents can disable it, and whether it is age-appropriate. Those questions are not answers to the product-specific issues.

Has Kumma been fixed or independently certified?

The available sources do not establish what specific post-incident safeguards FoloToy implemented, whether an independent party tested them, or which software or model version such testing covered. They do not establish that Kumma has been fixed, certified, recalled, or proven safe. A seller’s marketing claims about parental dashboards or age-adapted interaction are not independent safety results.

Before relying on an announced upgrade, look for dated documentation that identifies the changes and the exact version they apply to. For an independent test, look for the tester, method, tested version and date, and findings—not simply a general assurance that a product is safe.

What should parents ask before buying or letting a child use it?

Use the questions raised by the senators’ letter as a practical checklist. A useful starting point is: “What specific safeguards does your company have in place to prevent AI-powered toys from generating sexually explicit, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content for children?” Senate letter

  • Safety boundaries: What happens when a child asks about sexual content, violence, self-harm, matches, knives or other dangerous household situations? Is the response behavior documented and tested?
  • Independent evidence: Has an independent party tested the safeguards? Ask for the report, date, method and software or model version.
  • Cloud and parental controls: Can a parent disable online interaction while leaving the plush usable? Can a parent review and delete conversation or voice data?
  • Privacy: What voice or conversation information is collected, retained and shared, and how can a parent request deletion? Wi-Fi support alone does not answer these questions.
  • Engagement pressure: Does the toy encourage a child to continue a conversation, and what controls or limits do parents have?
  • Updates and support: How are changes delivered, how are parents notified, and how long will the product and its connected services be supported?

The available product information does not answer Kumma-specific questions about voice or conversation retention, sharing, deletion, or whether cloud interaction can be disabled. Ask the manufacturer for current privacy and app documentation rather than inferring those practices from connectivity.

What do the product listing and care instructions say?

FoloToy’s page currently displays a $99 price and the status “Sale Sold out” as of October 4, 2026. This is a snapshot of that listing, not proof that Kumma is permanently discontinued or unavailable elsewhere; stock and price can change. FoloToy product page

For cleaning, FoloToy says: “Keep your FoloToy fresh by removing the AI module before washing.” The page directs users to hand-wash or spot-clean the plush, avoid machine washing and avoid extreme heat. FoloToy product page

How to compare connected toys

No independently verified safer alternative is established by the available sources. If comparing connected toys, assess the evidence rather than relying on broad safety claims:

  • Independent testing that identifies the tested software or model version and test date.
  • A documented way for parents to disable cloud interaction and review or delete voice and conversation data.
  • Clear, tested boundaries for sexual, violent, self-harm and dangerous household guidance.
  • Controls and evidence addressing pressure on a child to keep interacting.
  • Clear disclosures about connectivity, updates and ongoing support.

These are decision criteria, not claims that Kumma or another toy currently meets them.
