Fangel Emilio Colón Navarro is a Site Reliability Engineer from the Dominican Republic who was profiled by Linux Foundation Education and CNCF as part of the “Kubestronaut in Orbit” and “Humans of Cloud Native” series. Linux Foundation Education published its short profile, “Kubestronaut in Orbit: Fangel Colón”, on August 30, 2024. The fuller interview appeared on the CNCF blog on August 27, 2024. CNCF also lists him in its Humans of Cloud Native collection and on his individual profile page.
“Kubestronaut in Orbit” is therefore best understood here as a profile series highlighting people working with Kubernetes and the cloud-native ecosystem. The available profiles do not establish a complete set of eligibility rules or independently verify every certification associated with the label.

His first Kubernetes project: an Argo CD deployment
Fangel encountered Kubernetes in 2020 while working on a project that required deploying Argo CD. He said he initially did not understand much of what the work involved. Instead of treating that uncertainty as a barrier, he used the project as a reason to study Kubernetes more deeply and pursue a cloud-native career.
That origin matters because it shows a common route into platform engineering: a real delivery problem creates the motivation to learn. Argo CD became the gateway, while Kubernetes concepts, operations and troubleshooting supplied the foundation for later specialization.
The CNCF projects in his work
In the CNCF interview, Fangel names the following technologies. His comments do not mean that every project is required for every Kubernetes deployment or that all are used identically in one architecture.

Each tool also brings operational decisions. Istio can add considerable control-plane and troubleshooting complexity. KEDA depends on meaningful metrics and correctly chosen triggers. Argo CD requires disciplined repository access, drift handling and secret management. Prometheus needs useful metrics, sensible alerts, retention planning and cardinality control.

Fangel says CNCF certifications helped propel his career and gave him an opportunity to specialize. He also connects stronger professional skills with handling workplace challenges more effectively. This is his personal account, not independent evidence that certification alone causes promotion, employment or salary gains.
The concrete CKS example
He specifically describes the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) as useful when supporting and proposing Kubernetes vulnerability-management practices at work. That example links study to a job responsibility: understanding cluster security well enough to discuss and improve real controls.

CKS should not be treated as an entry-level starting point. Security preparation is more productive after you understand Kubernetes workloads, identities, policies, configuration and common attack surfaces. Certification can provide structure and a measurable milestone, but production readiness still requires hands-on operations, Linux debugging, networking diagnosis, container knowledge, observability and incident response.
What beginners can take from his learning advice
Fangel’s central recommendation is simple: practice the concepts encountered in educational material. Repetition turns a memorized command or definition into a usable troubleshooting skill.

- Linux: Learn processes, filesystems, permissions, services, logs, shell tools and basic troubleshooting.
- Networking: Understand DNS, TCP/IP, routing, TLS, ports and service discovery before diagnosing cluster traffic.
- Containers: Work with images, registries, namespaces, cgroups, container networking and runtime behavior.
- Kubernetes fundamentals: Deploy and update small workloads, expose services, configure storage and investigate failed pods.
- Operations practice: Exercise recovery, security controls, monitoring, logging and delivery workflows instead of only reading documentation.
A certification objective list works best as a curriculum for this sequence, not as a substitute for running systems. Beginners also do not need to master every CNCF project at once. A realistic progression is Kubernetes fundamentals, followed by operations and troubleshooting, then security and observability, and finally GitOps, service mesh or autoscaling according to job needs.

What his path demonstrates—and what it does not
A real project can start a cloud-native career
Fangel’s first Argo CD assignment supplied a concrete reason to learn Kubernetes. Practical work can make abstract concepts easier to retain and exposes the failure modes that courses alone cannot reproduce.
Certification is most useful when attached to work
His CKS example is compelling because it connects a credential to vulnerability-management discussions at his employer. The broader lesson is not that a certificate guarantees an outcome, but that its value increases when paired with demonstrable skills and relevant responsibilities.
Cloud-native careers are not limited to major technology hubs
His experience in the Dominican Republic and banking sector shows that Kubernetes, SRE and CNCF work develop in varied geographic and industry contexts. Hiring expectations, infrastructure access and the market value of credentials still vary by employer and region.
