Kubernetes Resilience Checklist: Backup, Failover, and Recovery Questions to Ask

Kubernetes resilience depends on more than an etcd snapshot or multiple control-plane nodes. A usable plan must cover Kubernetes cluster state, application data, persistent storage, the infrastructure needed to rebuild the cluster, and a tested path to restore service. Use this checklist to identify what can recover automatically, what needs an operator, and whether your design can withstand the failures you actually expect.

1. What state must your recovery plan protect?

Start by inventorying the data and configuration needed to bring the service back—not just the Kubernetes API objects. Kubernetes stores its cluster data in etcd, but an etcd snapshot is not a complete backup of every workload or dependency.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Kubernetes cluster state: objects stored in etcd, including the state Kubernetes uses to manage the cluster.
  • Application data: databases and other state maintained by workloads or external services. Kubernetes upgrade guidance separately advises backing up important application-level state.
  • Persistent volumes: data held on storage volumes, whose backup and restore behavior depends on the storage system and its CSI driver.
  • Rebuild requirements: configuration and infrastructure needed to recreate the cluster and reconnect workloads to their dependencies.

Write down the owner and recovery method for each category. If a database, volume, or infrastructure dependency has no documented restore path, an etcd backup alone will not fill that gap.

2. Can you create and protect a usable etcd backup?

Choose a supported snapshot method for the etcd version and environment you operate. Kubernetes documents built-in etcd snapshots and storage-volume snapshots as options, but they do not have identical operational requirements. Confirm that the chosen method is supported by your etcd release, storage system, and provider.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Set a recurring backup process that matches the application’s data-loss tolerance.
  • Encrypt snapshots and restrict access to the credentials, systems, and locations that can read or copy them. Kubernetes recommends encrypting backups; etcd may contain information accessible through the Kubernetes API.
  • Keep a copy accessible if the control plane or its normal storage path is unavailable. A backup that depends on the failed cluster to retrieve it is not a dependable recovery copy.
  • Record where snapshots are stored, who can restore them, and how their integrity and availability are checked.

Do not assume that a volume snapshot backs up etcd or application state unless the relevant storage and backup configuration explicitly establishes that coverage.

3. Can you restore the cluster from that backup?

A backup is useful only if operators can restore it with the versions and access available during an incident. Keep a runbook tied to the cluster’s actual etcd release; restore tooling and recommendations can change. Kubernetes documentation notes that etcdctl restore has been deprecated in favor of etcdutl, so confirm the appropriate procedure for your release rather than copying an old command.

  1. Prepare: identify the snapshot location, etcd version, required credentials, and the control-plane hosts or instances involved.
  2. Coordinate the control plane: follow the supported procedure for stopping or shutting down API servers before restoring etcd. Kubernetes cautions against restoring etcd while API servers are running.
  3. Restore etcd: use the version-appropriate procedure and restore all etcd instances as required by the topology.
  4. Reconnect components: restart Kubernetes control-plane components after restoration. If the restored cluster uses different etcd URLs, update the API-server endpoints accordingly.
  5. Validate: check that the API server and workloads recover as expected, then record the outcome and any manual repairs required.

Practice the procedure in a controlled environment. A runbook that has never been exercised does not establish how long restoration will take or whether the necessary credentials, snapshot, and operator access will be available during a real outage.

4. What fails together in your topology?

Map each critical component to its failure domain: machine, rack, zone, or region. Include control-plane members, worker nodes, storage, networking, load balancers, and application replicas. Several replicas do not provide useful protection if they all depend on the same failure-prone host or zone.

Kubernetes advises considering at least three failure zones for availability-sensitive deployments and distributing each control-plane component across zones. These are design considerations, not a guarantee: behavior depends on the cloud provider and cluster implementation. Confirm what your environment actually supports, including storage and network behavior during a zone or regional failure.

5. Can the control plane survive machine loss?

A control plane on one machine is not highly available. For a self-managed production cluster, establish how API traffic reaches the control plane, how etcd quorum is maintained, and who is responsible for replacing a failed etcd member. Kubernetes describes two kubeadm approaches:

Topology How it is arranged What to evaluate
Stacked etcd etcd members are colocated with control-plane nodes. Consider the coupling between a control-plane host failure and its etcd member, as well as how the cluster maintains quorum and replaces a failed member.
External etcd etcd runs separately from the control-plane nodes. Consider the separate infrastructure and operational ownership required, plus how API servers reach etcd and how etcd quorum is maintained.

Kubernetes recommends replacing failed etcd members promptly. Decide in advance who detects the failure, who performs the replacement, and how the remaining cluster continues to meet quorum requirements.

The kubeadm high-availability guidance is not a universal procedure for managed cloud clusters; it does not cover cloud-provider clusters or the behavior of Service LoadBalancer and dynamically provisioned PersistentVolumes. For a managed environment, use the provider’s documentation for its control-plane, backup, and recovery services.

6. What will Kubernetes recover automatically—and what will need a person?

Kubernetes can restart failed containers and replace Pods managed by Deployments or StatefulSets. A persistent volume may also be reattached after a node failure. These mechanisms help with some failures, but they do not repair an application defect or guarantee recovery from an unavailable storage system.

  • Identify which failures are handled by workload controllers and which require an application or infrastructure operator.
  • Document manual steps for application errors, persistent-volume problems, and failed control-plane or etcd members.
  • Maintain an out-of-band way to reach and repair infrastructure when no cluster node is healthy. Do not make the cluster itself the only route to its recovery tools or credentials.

7. Can maintenance or disruption defeat the availability design?

Separate involuntary disruptions, such as hardware failure, from voluntary ones, such as planned node maintenance. Check that workload replicas and their topology spread match the service’s availability needs across the failure domains you mapped.

PodDisruptionBudgets do not constrain every voluntary disruption. Understand which maintenance actions they cover and which remain outside their protection. Before a kubeadm upgrade, account for application-level backups as well as cluster maintenance procedures; a control-plane plan does not replace a database backup.

8. What evidence shows the plan works?

Set recovery objectives from application requirements rather than adopting a universal number. The Kubernetes guidance cited here does not prescribe one recovery-time objective, recovery-point objective, retention period, or drill frequency for every cluster.

  • Record the acceptable data loss and service interruption for each application.
  • Assign an owner to every backup, restore, failover, and validation step.
  • Exercise the restore procedure in the target environment, including access to snapshots and required credentials.
  • Capture the actual recovery sequence, elapsed time, data recovered, and manual interventions so the plan can be corrected.
  • Include a scenario where the normal cluster access path is unavailable, and confirm how operators can still reach the infrastructure.

A plan is credible when it has a clear owner, a recovery path for each required data category, and evidence from a restore exercise—not merely a successful backup job.
