On November 18, 2021, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and The Linux Foundation announced the release of the online Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials course (LFS250) and general availability for enrollment and scheduling of the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification exam. The announcement described LFS250 as beginner-oriented preparation and KCNA as an entry-level, multiple-choice assessment. Its prices, promotion, exam blueprint and availability were specific to that 2021 launch and should not be treated as current terms.
What was announced
The launch paired two different products:
- LFS250: an introductory online training course covering cloud-native technology, container orchestration, Kubernetes architecture and application delivery and monitoring.
- KCNA: an entry-level, multiple-choice certification exam covering Kubernetes fundamentals and the wider cloud-native ecosystem.
The Kubernetes project repeated the general-availability news in a December 7, 2021 release announcement. That later notice corroborates the historical launch; it does not establish that the same course, exam or terms remain available today.
Who LFS250 was designed for
The announcement positioned LFS250 for people new to cloud-native technology and orchestration, including developers, administrators, architects and managers. Its purpose was to provide shared terminology and a high-level understanding before someone moved into more specialized Kubernetes work.
Announced course scope
- An overview of cloud-native technologies.
- Container-orchestration concepts and the challenges orchestration addresses.
- High-level Kubernetes architecture.
- How orchestration differs from legacy environments.
- Delivering and monitoring applications in distributed environments.
The course developer named in the announcement was Timo Heinrichs of inovex.

What KCNA covered at launch
KCNA was described as testing entry-level knowledge rather than advanced, hands-on administration. Examples included basic application deployment with kubectl; the roles of containers, pods, nodes and clusters; cloud-native projects and concepts such as storage, networking, GitOps and service mesh; and foundational cloud-native security principles.
2021 examination domains
| Domain | Weight | Examples named in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Kubernetes Fundamentals | 46% | Resources, architecture, APIs, containers and scheduling |
| Container Orchestration | 22% | Orchestration fundamentals, runtime, security, networking, service mesh and storage |
| Cloud Native Architecture | 16% | Architecture fundamentals, autoscaling, serverless, community and governance, personas and open standards |
| Cloud Native Observability | 8% | Telemetry, observability, Prometheus and cost management |
| Cloud Native Application Delivery | 8% | Application-delivery fundamentals, GitOps and CI/CD |
These percentages are the blueprint published in the November 2021 announcement. They are historical and should not be assumed to match a current KCNA blueprint without checking the certification’s present official documentation.
How the course and certification fit together
| Question | LFS250 | KCNA |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Training course | Multiple-choice certification exam |
| Main purpose | Build introductory understanding and prepare learners for KCNA | Assess entry-level Kubernetes and cloud-native knowledge |
| Best fit | People new to cloud-native technology, including technical and management roles | Learners seeking a formal entry-level credential |
| Coverage emphasis | Overview, orchestration, architecture, delivery and monitoring | Five weighted knowledge domains listed above |
The announcement presented KCNA as a possible starting point for pursuing further CNCF credentials, specifically naming Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) and Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS). It did not state that KCNA is a prerequisite for any of them.
Launch-period prices and promotion
The regular prices listed in the 2021 announcement were $250 for the standalone exam, $99 for LFS250 and $299 for the course-and-exam bundle. A temporary promotion, scheduled to end November 28, 2021, listed $125 for the exam, $50 for LFS250 and $105 for the bundle.

Why the launch drew attention
CNCF said more than 100,000 Kubernetes certification registrations had been recorded by that point and that all 400 KCNA beta slots were claimed within an hour during the October 2021 KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America launch. The figures were attributed to Katie Gamanji, then CNCF Ecosystem Advocate, and describe the launch period rather than current participation.

The exam was developed with Certiverse. The announcement said Certiverse’s platform enabled a global group of 15 subject-matter experts to create test content asynchronously.

How to interpret the announcement today
- Use LFS250’s description as a record of the course’s original beginner scope.
- Use the five-domain table as the 2021 KCNA exam outline, not as a guaranteed current syllabus.
- Treat the listed prices and discount deadline as historical launch information.
- Check the current Linux Foundation and CNCF certification and training pages before paying or planning study time; the announcement does not resolve present availability, price, policy, language or geographic access.
For a newcomer who wanted structured instruction in 2021, LFS250 was the guided-learning option; KCNA was the assessment and credential. The announcement’s evidence supports that distinction, but not a claim that either offering remains unchanged.
