Krikzz, the company behind the EverDrive line, has publicly signaled that it is developing a plug-and-play optical drive emulator (ODE) for the original PlayStation. A discussion dated October 15, 2026, reproduces a message attributed to Krikzz: “I’m a little late to this party, but I’ll still come. PS1 plug and play ODE on it’s way.”
That is a development announcement, not a product launch. No reliable price, release date, preorder window, supported PlayStation revisions, image-format list or firmware specification has been published in the available evidence.

What Krikzz has actually announced
The statement indicates that a PlayStation 1 ODE is on the way and that Krikzz intends it to be plug-and-play. It does not establish whether manufacturing has begun, when units will ship or which consoles the hardware will support.

What a PlayStation 1 ODE does
An optical drive emulator replaces or emulates the console’s aging CD mechanism. Instead of spinning a physical disc, the PlayStation reads a disc image stored on solid-state media, usually an SD or microSD card. Users create those images from legally obtained discs or use other legally acquired software; an ODE does not itself provide game files.
The hardware still has to match the console’s electrical and mechanical design. PlayStation 1 revisions use different drive assemblies and motherboard layouts, so compatibility, installation method and required firmware depend on the specific ODE and console board.

What “plug-and-play” is likely to mean
Current products show that the phrase generally refers to the installation rather than universal compatibility. A plug-and-play design can replace the original drive and connect using existing points, avoiding motherboard soldering. It still may require opening the console, removing the optical mechanism and preparing a storage card.

ArcStation
ArcStation is the clearest example of a solderless PS1 ODE in the current market. RetroRGB’s October 15 report says it works with all PlayStation 1 models and installs by removing the original optical drive and plugging the replacement into its place. Setup uses an exFAT-formatted SD card and copied game files.
Those details describe ArcStation, not Krikzz’s unreleased hardware. The same report said another stock release was expected in November, making the timing a moving target rather than a guaranteed reservation.

XStation
XStation is an established optical-drive replacement with a different installation profile. Its product information lists ISO, CUE/BIN and CHD support from microSD storage. Console-board differences are important: the PU-8 version is described by a reseller as requiring extensive soldering, so it is not a universal solderless installation.

What is still unknown about Krikzz’s ODE
The announcement does not answer the questions that determine whether a particular console owner can use the device:

- It is not known whether the original optical drive can remain installed or be restored without buying extra parts.
- Region behavior and compatibility percentages have not been published.
Do not infer any of these features from Krikzz’s other products or from ArcStation and XStation. They require a Krikzz specification or installation guide.

Waiting makes sense if your priority is a solderless installation
If you want to avoid motherboard work and are comfortable waiting without a timetable, Krikzz’s announcement is a reason to monitor official updates. “Plug-and-play” suggests that installation simplicity is a design goal, but the claim will remain provisional until the required console revisions and installation steps are published.
Buying now makes sense if you need a working solution
An existing product is the practical choice when you want to use disc images immediately. ArcStation has the strongest documented solderless and all-model claim in the available reporting. XStation may be appropriate for a console owner who can identify the motherboard revision and handle, or pay for, advanced soldering.

A future Krikzz product could have a different price, stock situation or compatibility range from current ODEs. Avoid treating an unannounced specification as a reason to modify a rare console before the installation documentation is available.
Checklist before choosing any PS1 ODE
- Identify the console. Record whether it is an original PlayStation model or a PSOne and determine its motherboard revision if the product requires it.
- Confirm the installation method. Check whether the board must be soldered, whether the original drive is removed and what tools are needed.
- Verify image support. Match the formats you plan to use—such as ISO, CUE/BIN or CHD—to the manufacturer’s current documentation.
- Prepare the correct storage. Check SD versus microSD requirements, filesystem rules such as exFAT, and any stated capacity limit.
- Check stock and support. Availability can change quickly, and a product that fits one motherboard revision may not fit another.
- Keep the original parts. If an ODE replaces the drive, store the removed mechanism and screws so the console can be returned to its original configuration.
Why the announcement matters
Krikzz entering the PS1 ODE market could bring another widely known hardware maker into a category that already has both solderless replacement drives and board-specific soldering projects. The immediate news, however, is only that development has been signaled. Until Krikzz publishes concrete specifications, buyers have a choice between documented products available now and an unpriced, undated project that may or may not cover their particular PlayStation.
