Kria KV260 PetaLinux 2021.2 BSP: Project Patches and Updates

For the KV260 project documented here, the main reported SD-boot correction is to point the root filesystem at /dev/mmcblk1p2 rather than the BSP’s default mmcblk0. The walkthrough also describes enabling Ethernet device-tree node gem3 and rebuilding and repackaging the image. These are changes reported for one project configuration—not an AMD-issued erratum or a guarantee that every KV260 setup needs the same edits.

What the 2021.2 BSP is—and what it targets

AMD’s 2021.2 release listing names the Kria BSP artifact xilinx-k26-som-v2021.2-final.bsp. The BSP is named for the K26 system-on-module; KV260 is the Vision AI Starter Kit that uses the module. The release listing says BSP downloads require Xilinx registration and directs Kria users to the K26 wiki for image instructions: AMD 2021.2 downloads.

For historical steps, use the PetaLinux 2021.2 Reference Guide (UG1144), released 2021-10-27. Its documented way to create a project from a BSP is petalinux-create -t project -s <path-to-bsp>: PetaLinux 2021.2 Reference Guide. Keep the PetaLinux tool version and BSP release aligned.

The 2021.2 release context includes U-Boot 2021.01 and Linux 5.10 built from Xilinx’s 2021.2 tags. AMD’s release highlights also list official Ubuntu 20.04 LTS support for KV260, among other changes; those release-wide highlights should not be mistaken for a list of patches required by this project: 2021.2 release listing.

Reported SD-card root-filesystem correction

The project walkthrough says the BSP’s default rootfs boot argument looked for the filesystem on mmcblk0, while the SD card appeared as mmcblk1 in the author’s setup. The author explains that optional 16 GB eMMC is MMC #0, including on boards where that eMMC is not populated, and shows the SD rootfs partition as /dev/mmcblk1p2. This is a report about that board and project configuration, not a universal enumeration rule: Hackster project walkthrough.

Before changing boot arguments, inspect the configuration generated for your project and confirm which device actually contains the root filesystem. MMC numbering can depend on the hardware and configuration; use a serial console or other suitable diagnostics to verify the device and partition rather than copying the device name blindly. A wrong root argument can leave Linux unable to mount its root filesystem.

Reported Ethernet device-tree change

The same walkthrough describes enabling the gem3 Ethernet node in both the Linux and U-Boot device-tree contexts and setting the PHY mode to rgmii-id. The walkthrough also shows relevant device-tree include bindings and a kernel bootargs example. These edits are specific to the author’s intended hardware configuration; confirm that your board’s Ethernet connection, PHY, and device-tree bindings match before applying them. A node being enabled does not by itself prove the physical interface or timing configuration is correct. The changes are documented in the project walkthrough.

  5. The walkthrough packages a WIC image using petalinux-package --wic --bootfiles "ramdisk.cpio.gz.u-boot boot.scr Image system.dtb". It then writes the generated petalinux-sdimage.wic to an SD card. Use an imaging method appropriate to your system and verify the destination device carefully before writing: raw-disk imaging overwrites data on the selected device.

Interpret the BOOT.BIN choice cautiously

For this setup, the author says they continued using a 2021.1_update2_BOOT.BIN obtained through the Kria wiki instead of a BOOT.BIN generated by the 2021.2 BSP. That is an author-reported choice, not an established fix or general compatibility recommendation. Do not infer that mixing these versions is appropriate for another project; check firmware and image compatibility for the exact board and release.

AMD’s current Kria documentation describes the high-level boot arrangement as a two-stage process: factory-installed QSPI is the primary boot firmware, while the SD card holds the Linux kernel and root filesystem. Its current image and firmware guidance reflects later releases, so verify the applicable 2021.2 instructions rather than transferring newer recommendations unchanged: AMD Kria documentation.

Maintaining the project or choosing a later flow

If submitting changes, follow the instructions for the affected repository and branch. Xilinx’s PetaLinux repository documents branch-specific patch subject conventions and submission by git send-email to [email protected]; the meta-kria repository has its own branch-specific subject and mailing list. These are current repository routes and may differ from the process used for a historical 2021.2 change: Xilinx meta-petalinux repository and Xilinx meta-kria repository.

There is no established alternative 2021.2 KV260 BSP comparison here. For a later upgrade, check the target tool and BSP release, boot-firmware compatibility, operating-system or image support, and whether the project depends on PetaLinux’s single-platform BSP flow. AMD’s current wiki says its native Yocto reference image began in 2023.1 and supports multiple starter kits, while PetaLinux BSPs map one-to-one to static hardware configurations; that is current documentation context, not a change to the 2021.2 project instructions: AMD Kria documentation.
