Gary Wingrove became KPMG International’s Global Chairman and CEO on 1 October 2026, succeeding Bill Thomas. His central challenge is to make a large, independently structured global network act coherently—especially as it invests in AI—while maintaining the trust of clients and the public. KPMG said when it announced his appointment that its organization had more than 276,000 people worldwide; that is the company’s reported figure, not an independently audited staff count.
Who is KPMG’s new CEO?
Wingrove’s four-year term began on 1 October 2026. The title “Global Chairman and CEO” refers to his leadership of KPMG International and its global network, not to the chief executive of one corporation employing every person across all member firms.

Experience in global operations
Before taking the role, Wingrove was KPMG International’s Global Chief Operating Officer. KPMG says that remit included global operating integration, regional clustering, aligning investment, developing alliances and the delivery network, and advancing digital transformation and AI-enabled solutions. He also led KPMG Australia from 2013 to 2021.

That background gives him experience relevant to coordinating the network and executing shared priorities. It does not, by itself, show that those priorities have been delivered or that the coordination problem is solved.

Why is global coordination difficult?
A shared strategy across independent firms
KPMG’s global organization is a network of member firms rather than a single worldwide operating company. KPMG describes the Global Management Team’s role as developing global strategy and driving alignment among member firms, functions and sectors under the Global Board. The challenge is therefore to secure cooperation on shared priorities while member firms retain their independence.
That balance is consequential for investment and client service: global plans need enough local adoption to work across the network, without assuming that every firm has identical operations or authority. An article matching this topic’s headline cited James Ransome on the cooperation-and-independence tension; that is attributed analysis, not a formal KPMG position.
What progress would look like
For Wingrove, the meaningful test is not simply whether KPMG announces common initiatives. It is whether the network can align resources and execution across firms while allowing for their distinct responsibilities. His former COO remit makes this a credible area of focus, but outcomes will need to be assessed over time.

Can AI investment become dependable client service?
KPMG has identified digital transformation and AI-enabled solutions among the areas of its global strategy and Wingrove’s prior operating responsibilities. Converting that ambition into useful services requires more than adopting new tools: the firm must make implementation work across its network, manage risks and data responsibly, develop workforce skills and support cultural change.
Those are execution tests, not evidence of a result already achieved under Wingrove. Clients will judge AI-enabled work by whether it helps address their needs and risks in practice, not by the scale of investment or the language of an announcement.
The changing expectations on CEOs
KPMG’s 2025 Global CEO Outlook offers broader context rather than a measure of KPMG’s own workforce or Wingrove’s performance: 59 percent of surveyed CEOs said expectations and complexity had evolved significantly over the preceding five years. The survey reflects the changing demands on business leaders generally; it should not be read as an internal assessment of KPMG.

How will KPMG address governance and client trust?
Trust is also a live challenge because of a controversy involving KPMG Australia. The scope matters: statements about that member firm should not be treated as findings about every KPMG firm or the whole global network.

A parliamentary committee release recounted allegations raised by Senator Deborah O’Neill. KPMG Australia later said that, based on evidence identified to that point, the allegations had not been substantiated. Separately, the firm acknowledged inappropriate sharing of a client document.
In a later update, KPMG Australia said its handling of whistleblowers and investigations had fallen short of its expectations, citing shortcomings in management, investigative rigour and leadership action. Its May statements described investigations as continuing at that time. Those dated statements do not establish the investigations’ status as of 7 October 2026, and allegations should not be presented as proven findings.

The leadership test
The wider question for KPMG is whether public commitments to integrity are matched by remediation that can be scrutinized and by renewed client confidence. For Wingrove, the challenge is to lead the global network on trust without conflating the Australian member-firm case with the conduct of every firm.

- Coordination: Whether global strategy and shared investment translate into alignment among member firms without erasing their independence.
- AI execution: Whether AI-enabled services are implemented usefully and with attention to governance, risk, data and workforce readiness.
- Trust and accountability: Whether KPMG’s commitments to integrity are accompanied by reviewable remediation and stronger client confidence, while updates on the Australian matter are reported with their scope and dates.
On his appointment, Wingrove said: “As client needs evolve, I am committed to ensuring we bring agility, deep expertise and AI-enabled solutions to help them navigate complexity, manage risk and seize opportunities with confidence.” That is his stated intention, not evidence that these outcomes have been achieved.
