KPMG UK is proposing a sizeable reduction in its Advisory technology and data workforce while an accompanying claim that a technology-and-data boss is being promoted remains unverified. The documented action concerns jobs, affected practices, consultation dates and enhanced redundancy terms; the available reporting does not identify the executive or confirm that promotion.
What KPMG has announced
KPMG UK proposed about 200 redundancies in its Advisory data and technology division, equal to roughly 4% of Advisory staff. The proposed departures cover client-facing teams and were expected in October 2026 after consultation. Reports from The Register and The Irish Times identify artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, SAP and Testing among the areas affected.

KPMG said it was responding to changing market conditions, low levels of attrition and a need to align skills with client demand. Its public statement said the firm was “adapting where we are focusing and how we are set up to make sure we have the right skills in place to best serve our clients.” The firm also said it would support colleagues during the process.

The reports do not provide a job-by-job list or identify how many positions will come from each practice. They do establish that the proposed cuts reach several technology disciplines rather than a single project or office:

KPMG described the groups as advisory, client-facing operations. That wording indicates the proposal is about where the firm sells and delivers consulting work, not a blanket reduction across every technology employee in the company.
Consultation timeline and redundancy terms
When employees were notified
On 1 October, staff considered at risk were told that collective consultation had formally concluded. A message quoted by The Register said the original proposal remained unchanged and that employees would receive an email on Friday 9 October between 11:00 and 11:30 stating whether they had been selected for redundancy.

How the enhanced package was calculated
The reported offer combined statutory redundancy pay with enhancements. KPMG removed the £751 statutory weekly-pay cap from its enhanced calculation and counted qualifying partial years of service. The minimum guarantee was whichever produced the higher amount:

| Statutory calculation | The £751 weekly-pay cap was removed for the enhanced calculation; qualifying partial years were counted. |
| Minimum guarantee | £1,250 plus statutory redundancy pay, or eight weeks’ pay inclusive of statutory redundancy pay, whichever was higher. |
| Pay in lieu of notice | Could include employer pension contributions and, where applicable, a car allowance. |
The Register also reported that KPMG offered £100 to employees who waived specified contractual confidentiality and post-termination obligations, together with rights to appeal or bring claims. The payment was described as consideration for accepting those waivers, not as an additional universal redundancy payment. One affected employee told the publication that “the payout scale is insulting and disgraceful.”

Why KPMG is cutting roles now
KPMG’s stated explanation is skills alignment in response to market evolution, combined with unusually low attrition. The wider financial context suggests a softer consulting market: KPMG UK advisory sales fell 3% in the year to September 2025, according to The Irish Times. TechMarketView analyst Duncan Aitchison said the consulting business had been under pressure because demand remained subdued.
The firm’s UK workforce was reported at about 15,800, down from 16,600 the previous year and more than 17,000 during the pandemic. At the same time, average distributable profit per partner rose 11% to £880,000 for the year to September 2025. Those figures describe different parts of the business and do not establish that partner profitability caused, or directly funded, the Advisory technology cuts.

The episode follows an earlier July 2026 proposal affecting about 10% of UK group corporate-services staff, or around 200 roles, reported by City AM. That earlier round involved corporate services rather than the Advisory technology and data proposal, so the two announcements should not be treated as one single reduction.
What is known about the promotion claim
The headline claim says a KPMG technology and data boss told staff facing redundancy that he was being promoted. The available reports establish neither the executive’s name nor a confirmed promotion. They also do not show that any promotion was linked to the UK redundancy decision. The claim should therefore be treated as unverified, rather than as an established leadership fact.

KPMG did announce a separate US leadership change: Todd Lohr was named to lead a new Client Technology & Innovation group from 1 October 2026, while Steve Chase, vice chair and global head of AI & Digital Innovation, was due to retire on 30 September. That announcement concerns KPMG’s US business and does not identify the UK manager described in the headline or verify a promotion during the UK consultation.
What employees and clients should take from the announcement
For employees, the immediate issue is selection under the completed consultation and the terms of any settlement or notice arrangement. The offer’s enhanced formula is more generous than a calculation strictly limited to the statutory weekly-pay cap, but the separate £100 payment involved waiving legal and contractual rights and should be considered on its own terms.
For clients, the named practices show where KPMG is reshaping capacity. The reports do not say which engagements will move, whether subcontractors will be used, or whether every AI, cybersecurity, SAP or Testing project is affected. Until KPMG provides a detailed staffing plan, clients should seek confirmation of account-team continuity and escalation contacts directly from the firm.
