Kotaro Uchikoshi says a game his team had worked on for about a year and a half was suddenly canceled, forcing him to announce his new studio, CRASH KEYS, earlier than planned. The project’s name, platform, publisher, budget and cancellation reason have not been disclosed.
What happened to Uchikoshi’s game?
Uchikoshi, the game director and scenario writer associated with Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files, said the team’s latest project was canceled after roughly 18 months of development. Gematsu and Kotaku reported the statement on October 14, 2026.

“Because the game our whole team had poured our hearts and souls into for about a year and a half was suddenly canceled…!!” Uchikoshi wrote in the public statement reproduced by Gematsu. The wording confirms the length of the team’s effort and the abrupt nature of the cancellation, but it does not identify the party that made the decision or explain why it happened.
The cancellation also changed the timing of a separate announcement. Uchikoshi had intended to reveal CRASH KEYS at the same time as the game, rather than introduce the studio independently.

Why was CRASH KEYS announced early?
Uchikoshi said he started CRASH KEYS in March 2025. His original plan was to unveil the studio alongside the new game in 2027. After the project was canceled, he announced the company ahead of schedule to look for new work and investment.
“My original plan was to reveal CRASH KEYS when we announced our new game. That was supposed to happen next year… in 2027,” he said, according to Gematsu’s October 14 report. The early reveal is therefore a practical response to the lost project, not evidence that the canceled game is about to be revived.

How The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy fits in

The game has a Nintendo Switch edition. That credit is a documented connection to a released title, but it does not identify the canceled CRASH KEYS project or indicate that the two games are related.

What fans can expect next
CRASH KEYS’ announcement establishes the studio and its areas of work, not a replacement project or a new release schedule. Until the studio identifies a partner, investor or new game, there are no verified details about its next title.
For now, the material facts are limited but clear: a project received approximately 18 months of team development, was suddenly canceled, and prompted Uchikoshi to seek opportunities for the studio he had planned to reveal in 2027. Any further details about the game will require a new statement from Uchikoshi or an involved company.
