Kokura Explained: The Real-World Setting Behind *Stranger Than Paradise*’s First Act

Kokura is not the documented setting of the first act of Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. The opening section, “The New World,” was made in a New York apartment setting, with Eva’s arrival associated with 464 Newark St in Hoboken, New Jersey. The film then moves to Cleveland for “One Year Later” and Florida for “Paradise.”

Kokura is a real place in Japan, but available production records do not connect it to the film. The name belongs to a historic area of Kitakyushu, known especially for Kokura Castle and its association with Miyamoto Musashi.

The short answer: Kokura is not in Stranger Than Paradise

The first act of Stranger Than Paradise is called “The New World.” It is the section in which Eva arrives in the United States, walks from her arrival point to Willie’s apartment and begins the uneasy domestic relationship that drives the film’s opening movement.

Production documentation places that material in a New York apartment setting. A location listing identifies the corner where Eva first arrives and walks toward the apartment as 464 Newark St in Hoboken, New Jersey. That makes the most precise answer a New York–area setting, with the documented exterior location in Hoboken—not Kokura.

The confusion matters because Kokura is not a fictional name or a minor neighborhood hidden inside the movie. It is a Japanese place with its own history. Nothing in the cited production record, location listing or interview identifies Kokura as a filming site, a story setting or a location used for the first act.

How the film’s three-part geography works

Stranger Than Paradise is organized as three named sections rather than as one continuous location study. Each move changes the characters’ situation and the film’s visual atmosphere.

Section Place documented for the story or production Narrative function Visual and climatic character
“The New World” New York apartment setting; Eva’s arrival is associated with 464 Newark St, Hoboken, New Jersey Arrival and uneasy domestic introduction Urban apartment surroundings rendered in black and white
“One Year Later” Cleveland, Ohio Reunion of Willie and Eddie with Eva Wintry Cleveland and the colder, more desolate middle movement
“Paradise” Florida Road trip and attempted escape Warmer Florida setting contrasting with the earlier urban and wintry sections

AFI’s production record explains that the original short was filmed in a New York apartment and later expanded into these three sections. It lists Cleveland as a geographic location and identifies Florida as part of the final section. In an American Cinematographer interview, Jarmusch described the location work directly: “The second part of Stranger was shot on location in Cleveland and Florida.”

Where was the first act filmed?

New York apartment interiors and the opening setting

The seed of the feature was a short filmed in a New York apartment. AFI’s production record says that short became the first section of the completed film. This is why descriptions of the opening often use “New York” even though the best-known exterior location for Eva’s arrival is across the Hudson in Hoboken.

The opening’s apartment is not presented as a tourist landmark or as a carefully explained neighborhood. It functions as an enclosed, temporary space where Eva and Willie have to negotiate unfamiliarity, family obligation and cultural distance. The spare rooms and repeated compositions make the apartment feel less like a home than a container for awkward encounters.

464 Newark St, Hoboken

The location listing associated with the film identifies 464 Newark St in Hoboken as the corner where Eva arrives and begins walking to the apartment. That detail gives the first act a specific real-world coordinate without turning the entire sequence into a Hoboken travel guide.

For viewers trying to identify the opening on a map, the useful distinction is between the production description and the on-screen dramatic function: AFI describes the short as filmed in a New York apartment, while the location listing supplies a Hoboken exterior point. Together, those records support a New York–area/Hoboken answer, not a Japanese one.

What happens in Cleveland?

After the opening section, the film jumps forward one year. “One Year Later” brings Willie and Eddie back together with Eva in Cleveland. AFI lists Cleveland as a geographic location, and Jarmusch’s production interview confirms that Cleveland was one of the places used for location shooting.

Cleveland supplies a different physical and emotional register. The middle section is associated with cold, snow and a sense of exposed urban space. The change is not merely a backdrop swap: the characters are no longer confined to the apartment situation that defined the opening, yet their reunion does not produce a comfortable sense of belonging.

The Cleveland material is therefore the film’s reunion geography. If a scene shows the trio reconnecting after the one-year break, Cleveland is the relevant setting in the film’s structure. It should not be folded into the first-act answer, and it should not be attributed to Kokura.

Why Florida matters to the final act

The third section is titled “Paradise.” Willie, Eddie and Eva drive to Florida, and both AFI’s record and the American Cinematographer interview identify Florida as part of the production’s location work.

Florida changes the sensory expectation established by the earlier sections. The film moves from an urban apartment environment to Cleveland’s wintry atmosphere and then to a warmer destination associated with escape. The title “Paradise” carries an element of irony: reaching a warmer place does not automatically resolve the characters’ disconnection or give them a stable future.

That three-stage movement—arrival, reunion and attempted escape—is the most useful way to remember the film’s geography. It also explains why assigning Kokura to the first act creates a false fourth location rather than clarifying an existing one.

Why does Kokura appear in questions about the film?

A place-name conflation is the likeliest explanation

Kokura may enter a search or discussion through a mistaken place-name association. The film’s title, its international circulation and its deliberately stripped-down geography can make location questions easy to misstate, especially when a Japanese city name is attached to an American independent film without a production citation.

The responsible conclusion is limited but clear: Kokura is not documented in the available production record for Stranger Than Paradise. It should not be described as the first-act setting, an exterior location or a place where the film was shot unless a new authoritative source establishes that connection.

What the film’s records actually identify

  • AFI’s production record identifies the New York apartment origin of the opening section.
  • A location listing associates Eva’s arrival and walk with 464 Newark St in Hoboken, New Jersey.
  • AFI identifies Cleveland for “One Year Later.”
  • AFI and Jarmusch’s production interview identify Florida for “Paradise.”
  • No cited production or catalog source documents Kokura as a setting or filming location.

What Kokura is known for

Kokura is a real Japanese place in central Kitakyushu. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes Kokura Castle as a central landmark, says construction began in 1602 and notes the area’s association with Miyamoto Musashi.

The castle is accessible from Kokura and Nishi-Kokura stations, making it a recognizable destination within Kitakyushu. Those facts explain why Kokura can appear in travel, history or Japanese-geography questions, but they do not create a connection to Jarmusch’s film.

It is useful to keep the two subjects separate. Kokura belongs to the history and tourism of Kitakyushu; “The New World” belongs to the New York–area production geography of Stranger Than Paradise. Similarity in a question or search result is not evidence that one is the other.

How the locations shape the film’s style

Black and white as a geographic tool

The locations are not presented through postcard scenery. The production’s black-and-white photography flattens distinctions that a color travel film might emphasize, while still allowing weather, architecture and open space to change the characters’ surroundings.

The American Cinematographer account says Jarmusch considered location shooting important. Cinematographer Tom DiCillo said the desolation was heightened by black-and-white film and a wide-angle lens. That combination helps explain why the film’s geography feels emotionally consistent even as the actual places change.

Desolation without spectacle

New York-area apartment rooms, Cleveland streets and Florida roads are treated as lived-in environments rather than as attractions. The places matter because the characters occupy them awkwardly. A location can feel alienating even when it is ordinary, and the film uses that quality more than scenic beauty.

This approach also makes a mistaken Kokura attribution easy to perpetuate: viewers looking for a famous landmark may expect the film to announce where it is, but Jarmusch’s method is deliberately understated. The answer must therefore come from production records and scene context, not from a visual resemblance or an isolated place name.

The production scale behind the locations

AFI’s 1984 production record gives the completed film’s cost as about $110,000. That is a historical production figure, not a present-day equivalent and not a statement about what a comparable film would cost now.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The modest budget helps explain the practical geography. The opening grew from a short filmed in an apartment, while later sections used location shooting in Cleveland and Florida. The film’s movement between places is therefore tied to an independent production strategy as well as to the story’s structure.

Budget should not be used to infer an undocumented location. The $110,000 figure supports the film’s independent production context; it does not provide evidence for Kokura or for any other place absent from the location records.

A scene-by-scene way to identify the setting

  1. Start with Eva’s arrival. The opening section is “The New World.” The arrival point and walk are associated with 464 Newark St in Hoboken, while the apartment origin is described as New York.
  2. Check the time jump. When the film reaches “One Year Later,” Willie and Eddie reunite with Eva in Cleveland. This is the middle section, not an extension of the opening location.
  3. Look for the road-trip transition. The section titled “Paradise” takes the characters to Florida, the warm destination that closes the film’s three-part movement.
  4. Reject unsupported place labels. If a description calls the first act Kokura, compare it with the AFI record and the location listing. The documented evidence supports the New York–area/Hoboken identification instead.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the film Stranger Than Heaven. The film discussed here is Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. Correcting the title prevents the location question from being attached to a different or nonexistent work.
  • Using “New York” and “Hoboken” as if they were competing answers. The production record describes the apartment setting in New York, while the location listing identifies a Hoboken corner for Eva’s arrival. They describe different pieces of the opening geography.
  • Putting Cleveland in the first act. Cleveland belongs to “One Year Later,” after the film’s one-year jump.
  • Treating Florida as a separate unrelated story. Florida is the destination of the third section, “Paradise,” and completes the film’s arrival–reunion–escape progression.
  • Turning Kokura’s real history into film evidence. Kokura Castle and Miyamoto Musashi establish Kokura’s importance in Japan, not a connection to Jarmusch’s production.

Bottom line for viewers and location researchers

If the question is “Where was the first act of Stranger Than Paradise filmed?”, answer with the New York apartment setting and the Hoboken location associated with Eva’s arrival at 464 Newark St. If the question is “Is Kokura in the film?”, the documented answer is no.

The complete geography is compact and intentional: “The New World” uses the New York–area setting, “One Year Later” moves to Cleveland, and “Paradise” takes the characters to Florida. Kokura belongs to Kitakyushu’s own history, centered on Kokura Castle and its cultural associations, not to the film’s production map.
