PHYSINT is not Metal Gear Solid 6. It is a new action-espionage IP from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions, now being developed with Xbox as publishing partner. That distinction matters: Kojima can revisit the spy genre without Metal Gear characters, canon or design obligations. If PHYSINT simply repeated familiar stealth missions and cinematic tricks, its existence would be hard to justify. Kojima has instead promised “plenty of new ideas” and “a different kind of spy action.”
What PHYSINT is—and what it is not
Kojima Productions announced PHYSINT on January 31, 2024, describing it as a “brand-new action-espionage game.” Kojima said preparations were underway and that full production would begin after Death Stranding 2. The studio also promised cutting-edge technology, a stellar cast and a presentation intended to blur the line between film and games through near-life-like graphics.

PHYSINT is therefore best understood as a spiritual successor in genre and authorship, not an official Metal Gear Solid sequel. The official announcements contain no Metal Gear characters, continuity or title rights. Kojima’s own description is deliberately distancing: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action. It’s quite different.”

Why the partnership changed
From a Sony announcement to an Xbox publishing deal
The 2024 announcement was made with Sony Interactive Entertainment. On September 10, 2026, Kojima Productions said PHYSINT’s journey would continue with Asha and the team at Xbox, adding that the companies share the studio’s creative vision and that development was continuing.

Xbox’s September 9, 2026 announcement said it had expanded its partnership with Kojima Productions to publish PHYSINT. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said, “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.” The same announcement says the relationship also includes film and television collaboration. Neither announcement describes the earlier Sony arrangement as a cancellation or explains the business reasons for the change, so claims about cancellation, budget or exclusivity remain unconfirmed.
The cast and Kojima’s stated ambition
On September 17, 2026, Kojima Productions confirmed Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT’s lead. The announced cast also includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. The studio calls PHYSINT its third original IP and says Kojima described it as the culmination of his 40-year career.

That is an ambition statement, not a feature list. The known material does not establish how stealth works, whether missions are open-ended, how much gameplay is shown between cinematic sequences, or what role the cast members play. A GamesRadar report dated October 2026 said the story had been written but the script was not finished at that time; that is a dated development update, not a permanent status.
Why a safe Metal Gear formula would undermine PHYSINT
Metal Gear Solid gave Kojima a recognizable vocabulary: infiltration, surveillance, elaborate set pieces, political espionage and long cinematic passages. PHYSINT inherits the action-espionage space, but a new IP gives Kojima room to change the rules instead of protecting decades of continuity.

This is an editorial inference from the project’s announced brief, not a confirmed list of mechanics. “A different kind of spy action” could mean a new relationship between stealth and combat, a different mission structure, a changed player role in intelligence work, or a new balance between interactive scenes and film-style presentation. The important point is that PHYSINT has to establish its own reason to exist. Repainting Metal Gear’s familiar systems would make the new name feel like a limitation rather than an opportunity.

METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER
Konami released METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER on August 27, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. It remakes the 2004 game’s story and design and returns players to Naked Snake’s Cold War mission. Konami also lists platform-specific bonus modes and announced that the FOX HUNT online mode would be added later in fall 2025.

This is the clearest current option for someone who wants Kojima-associated espionage gameplay today, but it answers a different need from PHYSINT. The remake intentionally preserves a known Metal Gear experience; PHYSINT is being positioned around a new one.

Xbox said more information would be shared as development progresses. A publishing partnership with Xbox confirms who is involved; it does not, by itself, establish a final hardware list or an exclusivity arrangement. Rumors about those issues should not be treated as settled facts.
What the project means for Metal Gear Solid
PHYSINT does not replace Metal Gear Solid, and it cannot force Konami to change an established franchise. Its pressure is creative rather than contractual. A successful new espionage game from Kojima would show that his strongest ideas can move beyond Snake, the Metal Gear mythology and the expectations attached to a long-running series. That gives Metal Gear Solid a choice: continue serving its established identity, or take comparable risks rather than relying only on recognition.
For players, the useful distinction is simple. Choose METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER for a polished return to a known Cold War story. Watch PHYSINT for the possibility of Kojima redefining his own spy-game language. Until mechanics, platforms and a release date are announced, anything more specific would be speculation.
