Hideo Kojima’s comparison is thematic, not a claim that the plots are alike: Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty show people being steered by information systems, manufactured narratives and forces they cannot easily see. Kojima argues that misinformation, climate anxiety and algorithmic feeds make the film’s warning feel contemporary.
What is Digger?
Digger is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2026 film starring Tom Cruise. The official Japanese site describes a 129-minute theatrical feature about an oil-company chief executive whose profit-driven decisions help produce a planetary catastrophe. The president then orders him to clean up the consequences and try to save the world, raising the film’s central question: can someone who helped cause the disaster be trusted to fix it?

The “most divisive” label is editorial framing rather than a measured consensus. The available material does not provide a reliable box-office total, review aggregate or audience survey proving that Digger is 2026’s most divisive movie.

Why Kojima connects it to Metal Gear Solid 2
In an October 2026 interview with Gizmodo Japan, Kojima said he sees a structural resemblance between Digger and Metal Gear Solid 2, which he made in 2001. Social media did not yet exist in its modern form, but Kojima wrote a story in which social media effectively had a life of its own. As he put it: “Back then we didn’t have social media, but the story I made was one where social media took on a life of its own.”
His point is not that the movie recreates the game’s plot. It is that both works depict people living inside systems that distribute information, shape belief and influence political or personal choices. Kojima says misinformation now expands through social platforms and changes politics and everyday life: “On social media sites misinformation spreads quickly, and there’s a fear over how this has an impact on politics and our daily lives.”
Information becomes an actor
In MGS2, the threat is not limited to a visible enemy. Information, censorship and the control of what people encounter become forces with consequences of their own. Kojima reads Digger through a similar lens: the film’s oil executive is not simply battling a physical catastrophe but the stories, incentives and public narratives surrounding it.

That makes the comparison about information control. A character may believe they are acting freely while their options have already been narrowed by an unseen network of messages, institutions or expectations. The same concern applies to viewers who form judgments from summaries, clips or online reactions instead of direct experience.

Why Digger’s film-within-theater form matters
Kojima called Digger frightening because it depicts events that are already happening rather than relying on an invented meteor or alien invasion. The film then turns that fear into comedy. He also praised its dual structure, in which cinema and theater combine and the theatrical material ultimately appears as part of history rather than as a straightforward future setting.
Iñárritu says the film examines stories imposed on people: belief in those stories can hide reality, while humor can make unbearable problems survivable. The formal shifts therefore serve the same purpose as MGS2’s perspective changes. They interrupt passive viewing and make the audience notice who is arranging the information, what has been omitted and when a performance is being mistaken for fact.

The shared reality problem: smartphones, AI and opinions without experience
Iñárritu describes modern life as “fragmented truths within our smartphones.” In his view, people can hold firm opinions about a movie they have not seen because surrounding stories replace direct experience. His broader warning is blunt: “Our current world is one of having firm convictions on things we haven’t even experienced.”

Kojima connects that problem to his earlier work. He recalls that people who had not played Death Stranding described it as “just a walking simulator” as if they had firsthand knowledge of the game. For him, the label illustrates how a repeated description can become more influential than the thing being described.
He is especially concerned about AI-driven social feeds. If systems keep showing users only what they already like, differing ideas may never arrive in the same information environment. “You’re seeing only the opinions and things you like, so differing opinions and ideas never reach you,” Kojima says. That filtering makes manipulation harder to detect because a person may experience a carefully selected stream as if it were the whole world.

Is Digger really about misinformation and AI?
It is more accurate to call misinformation and algorithmic filtering part of the film’s interpretive framework than to claim that the movie is a literal story about an AI platform. The confirmed premise centers on an oil executive, a presidential order and a climate catastrophe. Kojima’s comparison explains why that premise resonates with MGS2: both ask how people behave when narratives and systems shape reality around them.
The climate dimension is essential. Kojima says that, aside from climate change, the possibility of being lost in a digital world where truth cannot be identified is what scares people most: “Right now, aside from climate change, the thing that scares us all most is the possibility we’re lost in a digital world where we can’t tell what’s true.” Digger joins those fears rather than replacing one with the other.

Playing or revisiting MGS2 beforehand may make the parallel easier to spot, especially its interest in manipulated information, perspective shifts and the player’s assumptions. But it is best treated as context, not homework. The two works use different mediums and different stories to ask a related question: how much control do people retain when unseen systems decide what they encounter?
What Kojima wants audiences to do
Iñárritu does not want viewers to consume the film’s message passively. He hopes they laugh, feel and discuss it afterward. That response fits Kojima’s reading of the movie: conversation is a way to test the stories surrounding an experience against the experience itself.
The most useful way to approach Digger is therefore to watch for both levels at once. Follow the executive’s attempt to repair a catastrophe, but also examine who supplies the explanations, which claims are treated as unquestionable and how the film’s theatrical layers alter your confidence. That is where its kinship with MGS2 lies—not in shared characters or plot mechanics, but in making the audience aware that reality can be edited before anyone notices.
