“Kodi won’t install” and “Kodi won’t open” are different problems. First identify the TV’s operating system and model, Kodi version, installation source, and exact symptom. Then use the matching fix: verify the Android package and platform for an install failure, or check permissions, cache, and version-specific launch problems when Kodi is already installed.
Start by identifying exactly where Kodi fails
A precise symptom prevents you from applying a risky fix to the wrong problem. Write down the TV brand and model, operating-system name and version, Kodi version, where the installer came from, and the exact message shown on screen. A phone photo of the message is useful because “cannot download obb,” a package rejection, and a black screen point to different branches.

“Kodi won’t install on my TV”
This means the package never finishes installing, is rejected as incompatible, or is unavailable in the television’s store. The likely checks are platform support, the installation route, and—on Android—the processor architecture of the package.

“Cannot download obb”
This is a launch-time message, not proof that every Kodi installation is broken. A Kodi project report recorded it on Kodi 20.3 running on Chromecast with Google TV in January 2024. That report is marked fixed by a code change, so it is a historical, version-specific example rather than evidence of a current, universal defect.
“Kodi black screen on startup”
A blank screen, a crash, and an immediate return to the home screen can have different causes even when they look similar. A March 2025 report described those symptoms on Chromecast with Android TV OS 14 and Kodi 21.2, alongside permission-denied errors. A separate March 2026 report involving Android 16 and Kodi 21.3 contained a user-proposed technical explanation; that explanation has not been independently established as a general cause.
Confirm the TV platform and Kodi package before changing settings
Kodi’s official Android downloads page listed Kodi v21.3 (Omega) when checked on October 13, 2026. It offered Google Play, Huawei App Gallery, ARMV7A (32-bit), and ARMV8A (64-bit) choices. The page warns: “The success of running Kodi on an Android device depends on a number of factors as there are so many different devices with different capabilities.” That warning matters because Android TV models do not all have the same CPU architecture, firmware, permissions, or store availability.
Android and Google TV
Use the official store route when it is offered for your exact television. If you downloaded an APK, establish whether the TV uses a 32-bit ARMV7A or 64-bit ARMV8A environment before selecting a file. Check the model’s system-information screen or the manufacturer’s specifications; do not choose an architecture by guessing from the TV’s marketing name. Kodi’s Android page provides the two architecture choices, but the page does not state a single Android-version requirement that applies to every model.

| Installation route | What to verify | When it is appropriate | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official store listing | That the listing appears for the exact TV account, model, and region | Preferred for a supported Android or Google TV device | A missing listing can indicate platform or regional availability limits; it is not automatically a network fault |
| ARMV7A (32-bit) package | The device’s reported architecture | Only when the television is confirmed to use 32-bit ARM | Installing the wrong architecture can produce a rejected package or an app that will not launch |
| ARMV8A (64-bit) package | The device’s reported architecture and firmware compatibility | Only when the television is confirmed to use 64-bit ARM | 64-bit hardware does not by itself guarantee that every firmware build will run Kodi |
| Developer or manually packaged build | Exact platform instructions and build prerequisites | Testing or development, not a first choice for a normal household installation | Developer instructions can be mistaken for consumer installation steps |
Kodi’s Android repository README includes APK and ADB instructions for developers. Those instructions explain how to build or deploy software; they are not a substitute for the normal consumer download path.
Apple TV and tvOS
Kodi’s tvOS documentation describes Xcode/developer installation and methods involving a jailbroken device. That is materially different from selecting Kodi in a standard television app store. Confirm the Apple TV model, current tvOS support, signing requirements, and the exact method in the current documentation before attempting it. A procedure intended for developers can fail even when the hardware is otherwise capable.
LG webOS and other smart-TV systems
Kodi’s webOS README covers developer packaging and installation through webOS tooling. It does not establish that every webOS television has a one-click Kodi store app. The same principle applies to other proprietary TV systems: identify the operating system first, then follow instructions written for that platform and model.
A safe troubleshooting sequence
Work from the least destructive checks to the most involved. Stop when the symptom changes; that new symptom provides useful evidence.

- Record the baseline. Note the TV model, operating-system version, Kodi version, installation source, available error text, and whether the failure occurs during installation or first launch. If Kodi opens far enough to reach settings, record its version there; otherwise use the installer filename or store listing.
- Restart the TV or streaming device once. Use the system restart command rather than repeatedly tapping the installer. After the reboot, retry the same official package or store action once so you can tell whether the original failure was transient.
- Re-check the installation route. On Android or Google TV, compare the source with Kodi’s official Android download choices. For an APK, verify ARMV7A versus ARMV8A from the device information instead of downloading both at random. If the television is not Android-based, stop using Android packages and switch to platform-specific support information.
- Check Kodi’s file and storage permission. Open the TV’s system settings and find the installed-app list; select Kodi, then look for Permissions, Files, Storage, or a similarly named control. Labels differ by Android TV release. Allow the relevant file-access permission if it is denied, then start Kodi again. Reports in a Kodi issue discussion say that granting access appeared to resolve some launches, but this is an anecdotal lead, not a guaranteed fix for every release or device.
- Clear only the cache. In the same Kodi app-information screen, choose Storage (or Storage and cache) and use Clear cache, then reopen Kodi. Clearing cached temporary files is different from Clear data. Do not select Clear data merely because the labels are adjacent: it can remove local settings and library information. A user report described cache clearing helping one device, but that observation is not an official universal remedy.
- Protect local data before reinstalling. If Kodi contains locally stored settings, add-on configuration, or a library that is not fully recoverable elsewhere, preserve or export that information using the backup method available on your setup before clearing app data or uninstalling. A reinstall should be a deliberate last resort, not the first response to a black screen.
- Retry with the same version and document any change. If permission or cache work changes a black screen into an error message, record that exact message. Do not switch versions, architectures, and installation sources simultaneously; changing several variables prevents you from identifying the cause.
- Escalate with reproducible details. When the basic checks fail, collect the model, operating system, Kodi version, installation route, exact steps, and a Kodi debug log if you can generate one. Use Kodi’s official help or community channels, or file an issue that includes the log and a clear reproduction sequence. An old report about a different version or device cannot promise a fix for yours.
Fixes by symptom
Package rejected, installation stops, or no store listing
- Confirm that the TV is actually running Android TV or Google TV before using an Android package.
- Check whether the model reports 32-bit ARMV7A or 64-bit ARMV8A, and use the matching official download option.
- Prefer the store listing when it is available for the exact model. A manually downloaded APK should be a compatibility decision, not a random workaround.
- If the television runs tvOS, webOS, or another proprietary system, stop trying Android packages and verify the platform’s current Kodi method.
- Do not interpret a developer ADB or packaging guide as proof that the television has ordinary consumer support.
“Cannot download obb” during first launch
First check the Kodi version and hardware. The documented Kodi 20.3 report on Chromecast with Google TV was from January 2024 and is marked fixed by a code change. If you are using a different version, device, or operating system, treat the old report as context only. Check permissions, retry after a restart, and capture a debug log rather than repeatedly deleting data.
Blank screen, immediate crash, or return to home
Verify Kodi’s file-access permission, then try a cache clear without clearing data. Note whether the TV is running Android TV OS 14, Android 16, or another release, because reports with similar symptoms involve different version combinations. The Android 16 report associated with Kodi 21.3 offered a user-submitted analysis; it should not be presented as a confirmed root cause. If permission and cache checks do not change the behavior, gather a log and report the exact combination.
Kodi opens once, then fails after a restart
Record what changed between launches: a permission prompt, a system update, a version update, or a new installation source. Recheck the app’s file-access setting and avoid clearing data until local configuration has been protected. If only one build fails, document that build number and test the official route appropriate to the device rather than cycling through unrelated packages.
Understand the risk of each reset option
| Action | What it changes | Data risk | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart device | Reloads the operating system and app process | Low | The first retry after recording the symptom |
| Allow file or storage permission | Lets Kodi access files the system currently blocks | Low, although the permission should match your privacy preference | A blank launch, permission-denied message, or missing file access is involved |
| Clear cache | Removes temporary cached files | Usually low; app behavior may be slower while cache rebuilds | After a restart and permission check |
| Clear data | Resets Kodi’s local app state | Potentially high for local settings, libraries, and configuration | Only after preserving data and deciding that a full reset is justified |
| Uninstall and reinstall | Removes the app and requires a fresh installation | Potentially high, depending on what is stored locally | After platform, architecture, permissions, and cache have been checked |
When a separate streaming device makes sense
Some televisions are poor hosts because Kodi is not supported through a normal store route or because the platform’s installation path is developer-oriented. In that situation, a separately compatible Android TV streaming device can be an option, but only after checking the exact device model, operating-system version, and current Kodi compatibility. Extra hardware will not correct a denied permission, corrupted cache, or software defect on the existing setup, so buying a device should not be the first response to those symptoms.

What to include when asking for help
A useful support request lets someone reproduce the failure without guessing. Include:
- TV or streaming-device brand and full model number.
- Operating system and version, such as the Android TV or Google TV release.
- Kodi version and whether it is a store installation, official package, or another build.
- The exact error text, including capitalization, or a photo of the screen.
- The point of failure: download, installation, first launch, playback, or return to home.
- Whether a restart, permission change, or cache clear altered the symptom.
- A Kodi debug log when available, with personal information removed where necessary.
This information distinguishes an install rejection from a launch crash and prevents an old “Cannot download obb” report from being applied to an unrelated device.
Decision checklist
- Not installed? Identify the operating system, confirm the model, and use the matching official route and Android architecture.
- Installed but blank or crashing? Check Kodi’s file-access permission, restart once, and clear only the cache.
- Still failing? Preserve local data, avoid random package changes, and collect a debug log.
- Not an Android/Google TV device? Follow the current tvOS, webOS, or other platform-specific method; do not assume an app-store installation exists.
- Unsupported host? Consider compatible streaming hardware only after verifying its exact model and software support.
Bottom line
Kodi failures on televisions are not one single bug. Installation rejection usually requires a platform and architecture check; a black screen or crash after installation calls for permission and cache checks; and “Cannot download obb” must be tied to the particular Kodi version and device that produced it. Make one low-risk change at a time, protect local data before clearing app data or reinstalling, and provide complete version and log details when official support is needed.
