Start with Schema.org types and JSON-LD when they fit your data, then add a domain ontology with strict validation rules as ambiguity or risk increases. An enterprise graph service becomes useful when you need large-scale identity resolution, governance, provenance and low-friction integration across many systems.
These settings improve the conditions under which an answer generator works. They do not guarantee a particular accuracy percentage: official documentation describes the mechanisms, but no controlled statistic establishes that one ontology configuration universally improves answer accuracy.

Why ontology quality changes AI answers
An answer system can only retrieve and reason over what the graph represents clearly. Google Cloud describes a knowledge graph as improving search quality by understanding relationships between instances and entities, producing deeper, context-aware data. Google Search Central describes retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also called grounding, as retrieving relevant, up-to-date pages to improve response quality, accuracy and freshness. A graph supplies another layer of that grounding: it identifies the entities in a question, exposes their relationships and points the generator toward supporting claims.

A graph with stable identifiers, typed predicates, effective dates and source-level evidence can resolve the company, traverse the manufacturer and supports edges, filter by current status and show the passages behind the result.

Schema.org is useful because its shared vocabulary gives common types and properties to web publishers and consuming systems. Its FAQ describes the project as a joint effort to help search engines understand page information and enable richer results and other applications. It is not, by itself, a complete domain model for every internal use case. Treat it as an interoperable base layer, not as a substitute for constraints, identity management or retrieval policy.
The settings to establish first
1. Give every entity a canonical identifier
Assign a stable identifier to each person, organization, product, place, document and concept. The identifier should survive a name change, URL migration or source-system replacement. Use one namespace and document its construction rules; do not derive identity solely from a display name.
Store aliases, former names, abbreviations, language variants and disambiguation attributes such as location, date of birth, product model or parent organization. “Mercury” might be a planet, an automobile model or a company. Distinguishing fields prevent records with identical labels from collapsing into one node.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Make identifiers unique and immutable after publication.
- Keep the human-readable label separate from the identifier.
- Record merge and split events when duplicate entities are discovered.
- Retain source identifiers so a claim can be traced back to its originating record.
2. Use typed, directed relationships
Represent a relationship as a predicate with a direction, domain and expected range. author, partOf, manufacturer, locatedIn, supports and derivedFrom convey more meaning than a generic “related to” edge.
Direction matters. “Product supports protocol” is not equivalent to “protocol supports product”; reversing the edge can produce a plausible but false answer. Define whether a predicate is one-to-one, one-to-many or many-to-many, and state whether the inverse is materialized or inferred. Set domain and range expectations so a document cannot accidentally become the manufacturer of a place.

3. Maintain a schema-to-source mapping
For each source field, document the graph property it populates, its data type, transformation rule and ownership. Google Cloud documentation explicitly describes mapping an original data-store schema to entity properties. A mapping prevents silent drift when a source renames a column or changes units.
Include null handling, language rules, normalization and conflict policy. For example, map a source field named maker_id to the manufacturer relationship only after resolving that identifier against the organization registry. Keep the mapping version with the ingestion job so an old claim can be reconstructed.
4. Attach provenance and time to claims
Store the source URL, publisher, retrieval date, effective date, expiration date where known, and a confidence or review state with each claim. Provenance lets retrieval favor authoritative evidence and lets an answer explain why a fact was selected.
Separate publication time from effective time. A policy published in March may take effect in July; treating publication date as the validity date can make a time-sensitive answer wrong. If two authoritative sources disagree, preserve both claims with their dates and review states instead of overwriting one without an audit trail.
5. Reuse Schema.org and JSON-LD selectively
Use Schema.org types and properties when they describe your entities without distortion. JSON-LD is a practical serialization for publishing linked data because identifiers and relationships remain explicit while the source document stays readable. Add a domain namespace for concepts that Schema.org does not cover, and document how the custom term relates to the shared vocabulary.

Track official Schema.org releases and changes. A property that is appropriate today can be superseded or clarified later; vocabulary governance is part of ontology maintenance, not a one-time markup task.
6. Link related items explicitly
Use @id to connect repeated references to the same item, sameAs when two identifiers genuinely refer to the same entity, and explicit links between related objects. Google’s structured-data guidance warns that unlinked items may prevent it from understanding their relationships. In an internal graph, the same principle applies: a product node, its manufacturer node and its supporting document should be connected rather than represented as isolated blobs.
7. Validate before indexing
Define required properties, permitted value types, cardinality, relation direction and identifier uniqueness. Add checks for orphan nodes, broken references, impossible dates and unsupported predicates. Records that fail should be rejected or quarantined before they reach the retrieval index; otherwise the generator may treat malformed data as authoritative.
8. Control retrieval, not just storage
Combine lexical or vector retrieval with entity lookup and graph traversal. First identify candidate entities and user intent, then traverse only approved relation types. Apply filters for freshness, source authority, effective date and confidence. Return the supporting passages or claim records to the answer generator so it can cite or summarize evidence instead of relying on an unsupported node label.
Choosing a graph approach
The three approaches below can coexist. The right choice depends on how much identity resolution, constraint enforcement and governance your answer system needs.

| Dimension | Lightweight Schema.org/JSON-LD layer | Domain ontology with strict constraints | Enterprise graph service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entity coverage | Common web entities and simple extensions | Deep coverage of a defined business domain | Broad, cross-system coverage with shared identity services |
| Relation expressiveness | Standard properties plus limited custom terms | Rich predicates, inverses, rules and domain/range constraints | Rich predicates plus managed query and integration features |
| Identifier stability | Requires application-level ID policy | Explicit namespace, lifecycle and merge rules | Often supported by centralized entity and metadata services |
| Provenance | Possible, but must be modeled by the implementer | First-class claim, source and temporal modeling | Managed lineage and access controls may be available; verify the service design |
| Validation strictness | Light to moderate; schema checks are usually custom | High, with required fields, cardinality and shape validation | Configurable, with operational monitoring and policy integration |
| Retrieval latency | Low overhead for small graphs; workload-dependent | Depends on reasoning depth, indexing and traversal limits | Depends on service topology, query plan and network path; benchmark your workload |
| Freshness controls | Ingestion schedule and application filters | Explicit effective dates, expiry and source priority | Pipeline and policy controls across multiple repositories |
| Interoperability | Strong with web and search tooling | Strong when it maps back to shared vocabularies | Depends on supported standards, connectors and export options |
| Maintenance cost | Lower initial cost, more custom application logic as scope grows | Higher modeling and governance effort | Higher platform, integration and operational commitment |
These are architectural trade-offs, not performance guarantees. Select the simplest layer that can represent your ambiguity, provenance and policy requirements without hiding critical logic in application code.
A practical build sequence
- Inventory questions and sources. List the answer types you must support, such as ownership, compatibility, location or policy status. Record which systems contain the authoritative evidence and how often each changes.
- Define entity classes and identity rules. Start with the smallest set that covers those questions. Specify canonical IDs, aliases, disambiguation fields and merge or split procedures.
- Define predicates and constraints. Write each relation with direction, domain, range, cardinality and inverse behavior. Reject a generic relation when a precise predicate exists.
- Map source fields. For every input field, record its target property, transformation, unit, language and null policy. Version the mapping alongside ingestion code.
- Model claims, not just nodes. Attach publisher, source URL, retrieval date, effective date and review or confidence state. Preserve conflicting claims with their provenance.
- Serialize and link items. Publish JSON-LD or another RDF-compatible representation where appropriate. Reuse the same
@idfor repeated entities and connect documents, products, organizations and concepts explicitly. - Run validation gates. Check identifier uniqueness, required properties, data types, cardinality, date logic, relation direction, orphan nodes and source accessibility. Quarantine failures before indexing.
- Build the retrieval path. Detect entities and intent, combine keyword or vector search with graph lookup, constrain traversal and return evidence passages or claims with the generated context.
- Monitor and revise. Log unresolved entities, rejected records, stale claims, low-confidence links and unsupported answer requests. Version ontology changes and provide migration rules for deprecated terms.
Retrieval settings that reduce unsupported answers
Resolve entities before expanding context
Entity linking should precede broad retrieval. If a question names “Apollo,” first determine whether the context indicates a mission, a company or a product. Use aliases and disambiguation attributes, then pass the resolved identifier into traversal and text search.
Limit traversal by intent and predicate
A question about compatibility should traverse supports, requires and version relationships, not every edge connected to a product. A question about ownership should prioritize manufacturer, ownedBy and effective dates. Relation allow-lists reduce noisy context and accidental semantic jumps.
Rank evidence by authority and freshness
Use publisher authority, review state, effective date and retrieval date as ranking features. A newer page is not automatically more authoritative, and an authoritative page may describe a future policy. Keep these dimensions separate so the generator can explain the selection.

Return claim-level support
Pass the answer model the exact supporting claims or passages, their identifiers and provenance. Instruct it to abstain or state uncertainty when no claim satisfies the requested date, geography, version or confidence threshold. This is more reliable than supplying a large, unfiltered neighborhood of the graph.
Best Value
Validation and governance checklist
- Every node has one canonical ID and a human-readable label.
- Aliases and disambiguation attributes are searchable.
- Every predicate has an owner, direction, domain and range.
- Required properties and cardinality rules are executable.
- Source, publisher, retrieval date and effective date are retained per claim.
- Conflicting claims remain distinguishable rather than silently merged.
- Orphan nodes, broken links and impossible dates fail a pre-index check.
- Deprecated terms have replacements and migration rules.
- Traversal is restricted by intent, relation type, authority and freshness.
- Answer logs retain the entities and evidence used for later review.
Common failure modes and fixes
Duplicate names become one entity
Symptom: Answers combine facts about two people or products with the same name. Fix: Require canonical IDs and disambiguation fields, then run duplicate detection before merge decisions.
Generic edges create plausible nonsense
Symptom: The system claims that a document manufactures a product or that a location authored a policy. Fix: Replace “related to” with typed predicates and enforce domain and range constraints.
Stale facts outrank current evidence
Symptom: An expired price, version or policy appears in a current answer. Fix: Store effective and expiry dates, apply freshness filters during retrieval and retain the older claim only for historical queries.
Correct nodes are retrieved without proof
Symptom: The answer names the right entity but cannot show why a relationship is true. Fix: Model provenance at claim level and return the supporting passage or source record with the retrieval result.
Vocabulary changes break downstream queries
Symptom: A Schema.org or domain term is renamed or deprecated and answer coverage falls. Fix: Track official releases, version the ontology, map deprecated terms and test representative questions after migration.
How to evaluate improvement without inventing a benchmark
Build a fixed evaluation set from real questions and label the expected entities, relations, time scope and acceptable evidence. Compare configurations on measurable dimensions such as entity-linking precision, relation retrieval recall, proportion of claims with provenance, stale-claim rate, unsupported-answer rate and abstention quality. Segment results by ambiguity, source type and query intent.
Do not report a single accuracy percentage unless the test set, annotation rules, retrieval settings and comparison baseline are documented. The official sources cited here establish why entity linking, schema mapping, linked data and grounding help; they do not publish a universal performance gain for a particular ontology setting.

Use Schema.org and JSON-LD for interoperable descriptions, stable IDs and explicit links. Add a domain ontology when your questions require precise predicates, constraints, temporal claims or controlled vocabularies. Add enterprise graph capabilities when identity, provenance, access control and ingestion span many systems. In every case, pair the model with validation and retrieval rules: a well-labeled graph that returns the wrong neighborhood can still produce a confident wrong answer.
