Announced in 2021 as a ground-up remake, it is intended to update the original’s technology, features, and visuals while preserving the integrity of its story and characters. Specific changes to combat, dialogue, progression, quests, or story content have not been established in the sources reviewed.
What has been confirmed about the remake?
In its September 9, 2021 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment described the project as a ground-up remake of the classic RPG. Aspyr lead producer Ryan Treadwell said the team was rebuilding it with modern technology, features, and visuals while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters. Sony also characterized the work as covering almost every aspect of the original. These are development goals, not confirmation of how any particular mechanic or scene will change.

The announcement said the game was coming to PS5 and PC and described it as a PS5 console exclusive at launch. That is the platform statement made in 2021; the sources reviewed do not establish whether the plan has changed since. Sony’s announcement is the primary source for the remake’s stated scope and launch-platform wording.

What the original game is like
The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a BioWare single-player RPG released on November 19, 2003, according to its Steam listing. That listing describes a party-based adventure featuring Force powers, lightsaber construction, and travel among worlds aboard the Ebon Hawk. StarWars.com’s game page places its story four thousand years before the Galactic Empire, during conflict between Jedi and Sith, and also describes customizable party members, Force powers, iconic locations, and starship travel.

- This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Those details provide a baseline for understanding what the remake is reworking, but they do not prove that each feature will return unchanged. The two game descriptions also give different world counts, so a precise total should not be treated as settled without specifying and verifying the relevant version.
Which gameplay and story changes are still unknown?
The announcement does not explain whether combat will retain the original’s real-time-with-pause approach, or how the remake will handle dialogue, skill checks, choice consequences, character progression, party management, quests, or encounters. It also does not say whether story content will be added, removed, or rearranged. “Modern features” and “almost every aspect” indicate broad scope, but they do not identify particular design changes.

- You are a young Jedi Knight, charged with leading a group of freedom fighters across the galaxy
- Recruit droids, humans, Wookies and other races to join your resistance group -- and train them in great mini-games like racing swoop bikes or manning turret guns
- Journey to dozens to unique locations, from the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyk to the Jedi Academy of Dantooine
- Customizable and evolving characters keep the story fresh and the gameplay interesting -- especially when you have to choose between the Light & Dark Sides of The Force
Those are the key areas to look for in future official details: combat pacing and controls; dialogue and consequences; character progression and party management; quest and encounter structure; story and character changes; audiovisual presentation; and platform availability. Until specifics are announced, claims that any one of these has changed would be speculation.
