Kleo is worth a look if you want a brisk spy thriller that mixes revenge and Cold War intrigue with dark, often absurd comedy. It is not presented as a sober historical drama, and “best” is a matter of taste rather than a ranking established by the available evidence. Netflix reports that the first season won major German television awards and received a Critics Choice nomination, but those honors are credentials—not proof that every viewer will love it.
What is Kleo about?
The series follows Kleo Straub, an East German spy who kills a businessman in West Berlin in 1987 during a mission with a secret Stasi commando. The Stasi later arrests her on what Netflix describes as bogus claims; people around her denounce her, and she is imprisoned. After the Berlin Wall falls in 1989, Kleo is released and begins pursuing the people who betrayed her—and the reason they did it. A red suitcase becomes central to the conspiracy, while West Berlin police officer Sven follows the case and Kleo. Netflix’s series announcement lays out this premise.

The story’s geography extends beyond Berlin: Netflix describes the first season as reaching Majorca and the Atacama Desert as well. That scope, along with the revenge plot, makes the show feel more like a stylized, globe-trotting thriller than a tightly contained historical portrait.

What kind of show is it?
Netflix describes the first season as a mix of action, thriller, and comedy, set against the early-1990s Berlin backdrop. That combination is the main reason to choose—or skip—it. Expect a heightened spy story with tonal shifts rather than unbroken suspense or strict historical realism. The official description supports that expectation, but it does not establish a comprehensive critical consensus about the show’s accuracy or realism.

Does season two continue the story?
Yes. The second season continues the hunt for the red suitcase. Kleo wants to retrieve and destroy it, while the CIA and KGB pursue the documents inside. Netflix announced that season two launched on July 25, 2024, and lists six episodes at 45 minutes each. The announcement also names Berlin/Brandenburg and Belgrade among the production locations. What recognition has the series received?
Netflix reports that the first season won the Grimme-Preis in the Fiction category and two German Television Awards: Best Drama Series and Best Actress for Jella Haase. Netflix also reports a Critics Choice Award nomination in the United States. These are meaningful signs of industry recognition, but they do not establish a universal “best” ranking or provide audience-size data. Netflix’s season-two announcement summarizes the reported honors; its awards announcement covers the German wins.

Netflix’s October 2023 announcement also attributes “What a breath of fresh air!” to Stephen King. The page reproduces the line but does not provide a primary source for the original post, so it is best treated as a quotation reported by Netflix rather than independently verified here. Netflix’s announcement also reproduces brief press descriptions, including Glamour’s “Must-see series,” Vogue’s “So different – so good,” Welt am Sonntag’s “Sharp, fast, quirky and dirty,” and NDR N-Joy’s “One of the best German series in recent years.” Those are endorsements, not a substitute for deciding whether the show’s tone suits you.

Should you add it to your watchlist?
Choose Kleo if the combination of a betrayed former spy, a red-suitcase conspiracy, and comic turns amid the action sounds appealing. If you want a grounded historical drama, the show’s own description of its action-thriller-comedy blend is a reason to set expectations carefully. Netflix’s reported awards support giving it a try; they cannot settle the subjective question in the headline.
