The KitchenAid KF3 (model KES8453) is a 7.7-inch-wide bean-to-cup espresso machine designed for counters where width matters. It has a 60 oz (1.8 L) water tank, an 8.8 oz bean hopper, automatic milk frothing, iced-drink presets and 15+ recipes. Its narrow footprint is genuinely useful in a small kitchen, but its 18.5-inch depth and top-loading hopper mean you should measure both the counter and the space above it before buying. The US list price is $999.99.
How small is the KitchenAid KF3?
KitchenAid lists the KF3 at 14.2 inches high, 7.7 inches wide and 18.5 inches deep (361 × 196 × 470 mm). TechRadar reports a weight of 19.8 lb (9 kg). The 7.7-inch width is the key advantage: it can leave valuable room beside a toaster, kettle or food-preparation area.

Depth is less compact than the width suggests. The machine extends 18.5 inches front to back, and its bean hopper is mounted on top. Allow additional clearance to remove the lid and pour in beans; a shelf directly above the machine can make routine refilling impractical. KitchenAid’s claim that its compact machines are “25% smaller” applies specifically to comparisons with the KF6, KF7 and KF8, not to every superautomatic espresso machine on the market.

The KF3 grinds whole beans, brews espresso and dispenses milk drinks through an automatic milk system. Its steel conical-burr grinder offers five grind settings, while QuietGrind and IntelliGrind technologies are intended to manage grinding noise and extraction across different beans. A 2.4-inch color touchscreen provides drink selection and adjustments.

Drink menu and customization
KitchenAid lists more than 15 hot and over-ice recipes, including iced coffee and iced espresso settings. You can personalize strength, drink size and temperature. Automatic milk frothing works through a milk hose rather than the KF4’s carafe, so the hose must reach your milk container and be rinsed after use.
TechRadar reports four customizable user profiles and a 15-bar system. Profiles are useful when several people want different strengths or volumes without changing the base settings each time.

Does it make iced coffee?
Yes. The KF3 includes dedicated iced coffee and iced espresso presets. These are over-ice drinks: the machine brews a concentrated beverage for serving over ice rather than chilling a traditionally brewed pot of coffee. Ice, glassware and milk are not supplied as part of the machine, so leave room beside the appliance for preparing and serving the drink.

TechRadar used the KF3 for two weeks, preparing milk and non-milk drinks with two coffee-bean styles. The review also tested barista-style oat milk and full-fat dairy milk and ran the machine’s recommended cleaning cycles. The reviewer described the espresso as consistently well extracted and tasty.

That evidence is a single reviewer’s hands-on experience, not a laboratory comparison or a statistical study. It supports the KF3’s day-to-day capability, but it does not prove that it is universally the smallest superautomatic machine or that every bean and milk combination will produce the same result.
KF2, KF3 and KF4: what changes?
KitchenAid positions the KF3 between the lower-priced KF2 and the $1,299.99 KF4 in its US lineup. The KF4 has the same listed external dimensions as the KF3 but adds a larger display, a broader recipe menu and different milk hardware.

The KF3 is the sensible middle choice when width is the priority and a hose is acceptable. The KF4 costs more for a larger interface, additional recipes and a carafe; it is not a space-saving upgrade because its listed footprint is the same. The KF7 and KF8 are higher-priced, larger models, so they make less sense when the counter is genuinely tight.

The removable water tank holds 60 oz (1.8 L), and the bean hopper holds 8.8 oz. Actual refill frequency depends on drink size, rinsing and how many milk beverages you make. Because the hopper is on top, check that it can be opened fully in its final position.

Automatic care modes, a removable brew unit and a supplied KitchenAid water filter simplify routine upkeep. The box also includes KESCT8-2 brew-unit cleaning tablets, a ground-coffee scoop and the milk hose. Follow the on-screen cleaning prompts; milk components need prompt rinsing after use to prevent residue and blocked passages.
Is the KF3 worth $999.99?
At KitchenAid’s current US list price, the KF3’s value depends on whether its narrow width solves a real space problem. You are paying for one-touch bean-to-cup preparation, automatic milk drinks, iced presets, profiles and a relatively large tank in a 7.7-inch-wide body. If you have ample counter width or prefer manual control, a cheaper machine may offer better value. If every inch of width matters, the KF3 combines a genuinely narrow footprint with a full automatic feature set.

Measure before you buy
- Measure at least 7.7 inches of unobstructed counter width, with extra side room for handling the tank and milk hose.
- Check that your counter is deep enough for the machine’s 18.5-inch depth without blocking a walkway or cabinet door.
- Measure overhead clearance for the top-mounted bean hopper lid and for lifting out the water tank.
- Confirm that a nearby outlet can handle the machine without an extension cord crossing a wet work area.
- Plan a place for the milk container and for rinsing the hose after each milk drink.
Bottom line for a cozy kitchen
The KF3 is compact in the dimension that usually causes the most countertop conflict: width. Its 7.7-inch body, automatic drinks, iced presets and 1.8-liter tank make it a strong fit for a narrow counter. It is not shallow, however, and its top hopper demands overhead clearance. Buy it for that specific space-saving combination, not because “smallest” has been established as a universal ranking.
