Kita’s VLM Credit Review: Reading Bank Statements for Thin-File Borrowers

Kita says its vision-language-model (VLM) tools can turn uploaded bank statements and other financial documents into structured data and candidate lending signals. That may give lenders another way to assess applicants whose conventional credit histories are thin or incomplete; it does not mean credit bureaus are absent across the Philippines, Mexico, Indonesia, or the United States. The key distinction is between accurately reading a document and proving that information extracted from it predicts repayment.

What the tools do in a credit workflow

Kita presents Capture as document-processing software for lending workflows. Its API documentation says it handles bank statements, payslips, IDs, and tax filings for the Philippines, Mexico, and Indonesia. The company also describes reading scanned bank statements and e-wallet screenshots, then returning extracted and validated data. Its home page describes related services for document intake, underwriting, and borrower follow-up, with lenders retaining decision control.

Risk Score is described as a way to convert borrower-uploaded files into numeric signals that can be considered alongside an existing credit assessment. Kita says bank statements can enable cash-flow scores and payslips can enable income scores; if the relevant document is missing, the corresponding score may be null. Listed upload formats are PDF, JPG, PNG, and HEIC. The company says each enterprise client’s score set and calibration are customized.

Why this is relevant to thin-file applicants

A bank statement can contain evidence of deposits, spending, balances, and cash-flow patterns even when a conventional credit file offers little information. Document-derived features can therefore be another input for a lender to evaluate. They are not inherently a replacement for a bureau report, a credit decision, or a lender’s own repayment analysis. The materials establish Kita’s target use case, not that credit bureaus do not exist in the countries it serves.

Why reading transactions is not the same as calculating them

A reliable workflow separates four jobs. First, the system reads the document and extracts transaction rows. Next, it validates and reconciles those rows against the statement. Then software calculates derived values—such as total credits, total debits, average balance, or net cash flow—from the extracted data. Finally, the lender tests whether those features help predict repayment in its own portfolio.

This separation matters because a model can transcribe many fields correctly yet still miss rows, misread whether money went in or out, or produce an incorrect total. Kita’s benchmark argues that accurate transcription alone does not ensure accurate derived figures. Its stated approach is to extract the rows and calculate aggregates in code rather than ask a language model to do the arithmetic.

The benchmark describes examples of partial extraction and incorrect transaction directionality. In one example reported by Kita, a statement containing 209 transactions yielded only 29 rows from one system. That is a vendor-reported example, not an independently audited incident; it illustrates why row completeness and reconciliation should be checked separately from field-level extraction scores.

What Kita’s June 2026 benchmark reports

Kita says its June 2026 benchmark tested nine systems using 62 de-identified bank and e-wallet statements from the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States, covering roughly 2,200 transactions. The company says financial analysts curated the ground truth and people graded 558 outputs field by field. These are details reported by Kita about its own benchmark.

Kita defines “signal accuracy” as whether derived figures reported for a statement—such as total credits, total debits, average balance, and net cash flow—match the statement’s actual figures. It reports the following results for that sample:

Measure Kita’s reported result What it describes
Signal accuracy Kita Max: 99.3%; standard Kita: 97.6% Whether derived figures matched the statement, as defined by Kita
External systems’ signal accuracy 67.3%–83.5% Range reported for the external systems included in the benchmark
Field-level extraction 96.9%–98.7% across systems Extraction scores reported across the tested systems

All figures in the table are Kita’s June 2026 benchmark results for its stated sample of 62 statements and roughly 2,200 transactions; they should not be generalized to every bank, format, country, or deployment. In particular, the reported signal-accuracy figures are vendor-published comparisons, not independent confirmation that the same results will hold on a lender’s documents.

What the predictive results do—and do not—show

Kita’s Risk Score page reports a backtest on 8,000 self-reported uploads from a global microlender. Kita says it extracted 524 raw signals from financial content and document characteristics and found more than 25 signals meaningfully predictive. Against a bureau-score baseline, the company reports:

  • All documents: +2.4 Gini.
  • Data-rich documents: +7.0 Gini and +0.036 AUC.

The surfaced page does not state a publication date for these backtest results. They are company-reported figures, and the available description does not establish independent replication, whether the uploads represent other lending populations, or whether the lift would carry over to another lender. Treat them as a reason to request a portfolio-specific backtest, not as a performance guarantee.

Predictive lift also answers a different question from extraction quality. A tool may read a statement accurately without its derived features improving credit decisions; conversely, a feature’s value depends on the lender’s applicants, outcomes, existing model, and decision policy. A lender needs evidence on both the document-processing stage and the resulting credit model.

How lenders should evaluate a statement-analysis tool

Testing should use the lender’s own documents and repayment outcomes. A staged evaluation makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from reading the statement, calculating a feature, or relying on that feature in underwriting.

  1. Check extraction and coverage. Compare transaction rows with source statements. Test photographed and scanned pages, long and multi-page statements, and the local banks, e-wallets, languages, and formats in the applicant base. Measure missing rows and incorrect transaction direction, not just whether selected fields were read correctly.
  2. Reconcile derived values. Independently recalculate credits, debits, balances, and cash-flow figures from the source rows. Confirm that the tool’s totals match those calculations and make it possible to trace a reported signal back to supporting transactions.
  3. Examine document and fraud controls. Ask how the system detects document inconsistencies or possible fraud, and test those controls against the lender’s own relevant cases. Extraction quality alone does not establish document authenticity.
  4. Backtest against the current policy. Use the lender’s repayment outcomes to test whether the features add predictive value over its existing model or bureau score. Check results across meaningful applicant groups and document types, rather than relying only on a single aggregate result.
  5. Review deployment and governance. Establish how extracted data and scores enter underwriting, how exceptions are handled, and what records are available for review. Confirm that the lender retains the decision controls it requires and that the client-specific calibration is understood.

When comparing providers, assess row completeness, arithmetic reconciliation, local-format and language coverage, fraud and consistency checks, predictive value over the lender’s current model, integration and deployment controls, auditability, and customer-specific calibration. The available Kita materials describe its own products and claims; they do not independently rank competing vendors across these criteria.

Verdict: useful evidence only if it can be checked

Kita’s proposition is best understood as document processing plus potential underwriting inputs—not an automatic substitute for conventional credit data or lender judgment. Its benchmark highlights an important technical distinction: extracting transaction fields and correctly deriving statement-level signals are separate tasks. Its backtest offers a reason to investigate whether document-derived features might help, but each lender still needs to validate extraction, reconciliation, and predictive value on its own portfolio.
