The KIOXIA XG8 2TB is an OEM-oriented M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD. KIOXIA rates the high-capacity model for up to 7,000 MB/s sequential reads and 5,800 MB/s sequential writes, but those are manufacturer maxima—not guaranteed sustained speeds. It may suit a compatible laptop or desktop, but confirm the exact model, host support, seller warranty and return terms before buying.
What is the Kioxia XG8 2TB?
The XG8 is a client SSD family KIOXIA announced on April 26, 2022, for high-end notebooks, desktops, gaming systems, workstations and data-center boot applications. That description is the manufacturer’s intended market, not an independent endorsement. The 2TB base model is identified as KXG80ZNV2T04; KIOXIA lists a separate self-encrypting drive (SED) variant, KXG8AZNV2T04. Check the label and listing carefully because these are distinct model numbers.

KIOXIA’s product brief lists 512 GB, 1,024 GB, 2,048 GB and 4,096 GB capacities. The 2,048 GB base model is single-sided and uses TLC flash. See KIOXIA’s XG8 product brief for family specifications and KIOXIA’s client SSD data sheet for rated performance and power information.
Will the Kioxia XG8 fit your laptop or desktop?
Its shape and interface are M.2 2280 and PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe. M.2 describes the physical connector and card format; it does not, by itself, mean a slot supports NVMe or PCIe 4.0. Before ordering, confirm all of the following for the exact host:
#1 Best Overall
- High-Speed Performance: The KIOXIA EXCERIA G3 2 TB SSD delivers read speeds up to 10,000 MB/s and write speeds up to 9,600 MB/s for gaming, content creation, AI generation and video editing
- Future-Proof Interface: Built with backward-compatible PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0c technology for high-performance computing, fast file access and smooth multitasking across demanding applications
- Easy-to-install M2 Form Factor: Designed for low power consumption and reduced heat generation, the M.2 internal SSD installs directly into compatible notebooks, desktop PCs, custom builds and creator workstations
- Memory made in Japan: Built with KIOXIA BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory for high-density storage and fast data access, supporting gaming, media playback, 4K video editing and RAW image workflows
- Spacious Storage: The 2 TB SSD provides ample space for games, applications, media files and professional projects; KIOXIA SSD Utility helps users monitor, manage and maintain the drive
- It has an M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe NVMe, not only an M.2 SATA drive.
- The slot, cover and any existing heatsink provide enough clearance for the drive. KIOXIA describes the 2TB base model as single-sided, but the host’s physical layout still matters.
- The system supports the desired drive capacity and can boot from an NVMe SSD if you plan to use it as a boot drive.
- Your enclosure, if using one, supports NVMe and the relevant PCIe interface; an M.2 SATA-only enclosure will not work with this drive.
A PCIe 4.0 drive may operate in a compatible host at a lower supported link speed, but this evidence does not establish compatibility for any particular laptop, motherboard, enclosure or firmware. Check the system maker’s documentation rather than inferring compatibility from the M.2 slot alone.
How fast is the XG8 2TB?
KIOXIA lists up to 7,000 MB/s sequential read and 5,800 MB/s sequential write for high-capacity XG8 models. These are manufacturer-rated maxima, not a promise that every computer or workload will reach them, and they do not describe sustained write speed after the drive’s cache behavior changes. KIOXIA lists typical power consumption of 7.7 W for the 2,048 GB model; actual system power and thermal behavior depend on the host and workload.
Rank #2
- PCIe Gen 3x4 interface with read speeds up to 2,200MB/s and write speeds up to 1,600MB/s
- TBW=1200
- The warranty terms on all of its SSDs are based on whether the warranty length or TBW limit occurs first.
- To support a Silicon Power PCIe SSD, the system must have an M. 2 connector with only an M key. The Silicon Power PCIe SSD does not have a b notch and therefore, the b key on the SSD connector will prevent it from being inserted

Tom’s Hardware’s review of the 2TB drive observed writes near 6 GB/s for about 26 seconds, then a change in write behavior as the cache was exhausted. The reviewer estimated roughly 160 GB of cache in that test. Those figures describe one review’s workload and conditions; they should not be treated as a universal result across firmware, temperature, workload or capacity. For ordinary use, rated sequential maxima are most useful as a broad interface-and-performance indicator. For repeated large transfers, sustained-write behavior and the source and destination drives can matter more.
Is the Kioxia XG8 2TB a good SSD?
It can be a reasonable candidate if your system supports its format and interface, the specific unit comes from a seller with acceptable return and warranty terms, and its price makes sense against alternatives. Tom’s Hardware characterized the drive as an able PCIe 4.0 SSD that did not stand out. That assessment is a reviewer’s judgment, not a current market ranking. No comparable current-price set is established here, so the XG8 cannot be called a present-day value winner.
Rank #3
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 2TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
When comparing it with another drive, compare like for like rather than relying on peak read speed alone:
- Exact model, capacity, form factor and host compatibility.
- Measured sustained writes after cache, using comparable workloads.
- Warranty length, who handles support, and any endurance rating.
- Power and thermal requirements in your particular system.
- Current price and the seller’s return policy.
Warranty and support: what should buyers check?
Tom’s Hardware reported a five-year warranty and no official TBW endurance rating for this OEM product during its review period. That secondary reporting does not guarantee the same warranty terms for every region, seller or individual drive. ServeTheHome cautions that a drive obtained through an OEM system or another channel should not be assumed to receive direct KIOXIA support. Before purchase, ask the seller or system maker who handles a claim, what proof of purchase is required and how returns work for that exact unit.

Do not assume the XG8 requires an aftermarket heatsink. Whether additional cooling is appropriate depends on the host and its thermal design; check the computer or motherboard maker’s guidance and available clearance.
Verdict
The Kioxia XG8 2TB is a specified, single-sided PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 2280 OEM drive with strong manufacturer-rated peak speeds. Its real appeal depends on compatibility and ownership terms as much as the headline numbers: verify model KXG80ZNV2T04, confirm NVMe support in the target slot, and establish warranty and return coverage with the seller or system maker. For large sustained writes, treat the Tom’s Hardware cache observation as one test rather than a guarantee.
