Kioxia’s CD9P is an enterprise NVMe SSD family for data-center systems, and its maximum capacity is 61.44TB—not a capacity shared by every model. That figure belongs to a 2.5-inch, read-intensive CD9P-R drive. Kioxia specifies PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0 for the family, while BiCS FLASH generation 8 is its flash-memory technology.
Which CD9P model reaches 61.44TB?
The maximum-capacity model is the 2.5-inch CD9P-R, a read-intensive drive. Kioxia lists the 61,440GB capacity under two security variants: SIE model KCD9XPUG61T4 and SED model KCD9DPUG61T4. The distinction matters: 61.44TB is not the capacity of every CD9P drive, form factor, or workload class. Kioxia’s data-center SSD datasheet, revision 9.0 lists both models and family specifications; the copy was checked in 2026.

CD9P is designed for enterprise and data-center use, rather than being an assumed drop-in desktop upgrade. Kioxia identifies scale-out and cloud infrastructure as target environments for CD9P-R, and lists hyperscale systems, analytics, online transaction processing, media delivery, and virtualized environments among its applications. Those are manufacturer-stated use cases, not independent workload test results. Kioxia’s CD9P-R product page describes the series as read-intensive.
CD9P-R and CD9P-V are different workload options
The R and V labels identify different variants, not interchangeable capacity or endurance claims. CD9P-R is read-intensive; CD9P-V is mixed-use. The 61.44TB maximum belongs to the 2.5-inch R model, while Kioxia’s E3.S V-series page lists capacities up to 12.8TB and a 3-drive-writes-per-day endurance rating.

DWPD means drive writes per day: a rating that describes the drive’s rated write endurance over its warranty period, not a recommendation to fill and rewrite the full capacity every day. Check the specific model’s datasheet and warranty terms for the applicable conditions. The V-series capacities and endurance are listed on Kioxia’s CD9P-V product page.
What PCIe 5.0 and NVMe 2.0 mean
PCIe 5.0 x4 describes the drive’s host interface: it connects over four PCI Express lanes using the fifth-generation PCIe standard. NVMe 2.0 is the storage protocol used over that interface. Together, they identify a modern high-bandwidth data-center SSD platform; they do not guarantee a particular application speed. Actual results depend on the server, workload, software, cooling, and the specific SSD model.

Form factor is also part of compatibility. Kioxia lists CD9P in 2.5-inch drives 15mm thick and E3.S drives 7.5mm thick. A server must support the matching drive carrier and backplane as well as the interface. Confirm system qualification, power and cooling requirements, and security-option needs with the server or platform vendor before selecting a drive. The published product information does not establish compatibility with any particular system.
What BiCS 8 NAND and CBA describe
BiCS FLASH generation 8 is Kioxia’s eighth-generation 3D flash memory, using TLC (three bits per cell) NAND in the CD9P family. TLC stores three bits in each memory cell. Kioxia also describes the architecture as CBA, meaning “CMOS directly Bonded to Array.” The company says this architecture supports performance, efficiency, and storage density; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent validation. Kioxia’s June 20, 2025 announcement introduced the generation and reported its comparisons with the previous generation.

Published performance for the 61.44TB model
For the 61.44TB CD9P-R, Kioxia’s revision 9.0 datasheet specifies maxima of 13,500MB/s sequential read, 7,000MB/s sequential write, 1,200K 4KiB random-read IOPS, and 100K 4KiB random-write IOPS. These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent benchmark.
Kioxia’s CD9P-R page gives family-level peaks of up to 2,600K random-read IOPS and 450K random-write IOPS across specified models. Those family figures are not the same as the 61.44TB model’s individual ratings. The CD9P-V page separately lists up to 2,600K random-read and 750K random-write IOPS for its series. Compare the exact SKU’s specifications against the workload you intend to run rather than applying the highest family figure to every drive.

Kioxia’s generational improvement claims
In its June 2025 announcement, Kioxia compared a 15.36TB CD9P model with the previous generation. It reported up to 125% improvement in random-write performance, 30% in random-read performance, 20% in sequential-read performance, and 25% in sequential-write performance. The company also reported performance-per-watt improvements of approximately 60% for sequential reads, 45% for sequential writes, 55% for random reads, and 100% (2x) for random writes.

What to verify before choosing a CD9P
- Workload class: Choose between read-intensive CD9P-R and mixed-use CD9P-V based on the write demands of the application.
- Capacity and form factor: Match the exact model to a supported 2.5-inch 15mm or E3.S 7.5mm bay; do not assume the 61.44TB option is available in E3.S or V-series.
- Endurance: Compare the specific SKU’s DWPD rating with expected writes; the 1 DWPD rating cited here applies to the maximum-capacity R model, not the V series.
- Per-model performance: Use the individual model’s sequential and random read/write specifications, not a family-wide peak.
- Platform fit: Confirm PCIe/NVMe support, backplane and carrier compatibility, power and thermal limits, security features, and server qualification with the platform vendor.
