The series can be difficult to track because its release order is not the same as the order of every event in its fictional timeline—and some collections include story presentations you watch rather than play.
What is Kingdom Hearts about?
Square Enix describes Kingdom Hearts as an action role-playing series developed and published by the company in collaboration with Disney. Its official overview follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder, as he travels between Disney worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy, fights the Heartless, and seals each world’s keyhole to help restore peace. Sora is also trying to find his friends Riku and Kairi after their home is lost to darkness. Square Enix’s series overview sums up the central theme as “Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.”

That premise is the series’ anchor, not a complete explanation of every later plot. The conflict spreads across different worlds, characters, and organizations, while the phrase “Kingdom Hearts” refers both to the franchise and to a central in-world object or goal. Square Enix says Master Xehanort seeks to conquer it and remake the worlds according to his vision, but that description is not a license to reduce all of the series’ lore to one simple definition.
Five terms that make the story easier to follow
The series uses familiar words—heart, darkness, light—in specific fantasy contexts. These official descriptions are enough to orient a newcomer without trying to settle every later mystery.

- Keyblade: A mysterious, key-shaped weapon. Sora is chosen by one.
- Heartless: Manifestations of darkness born in people’s hearts; they threaten to engulf the worlds.
- Nobodies: The remaining shells of those who have lost their hearts.
- Organization XIII: A group of thirteen black-cloaked members who seek to become complete again by searching for their hearts. Square Enix’s overview says their true agenda remains secret.
- Kingdom Hearts: The franchise name and a central in-world object or goal. The official overview identifies it as something Master Xehanort wants to conquer, without offering one short definition that explains every use of the term.
These descriptions come from Square Enix’s official overview. As the cast and conflicts grow, a familiar word may carry more context than this introductory glossary can capture.
Who and what should you keep in view?
Sora is the recurring guide through the story. Donald and Goofy travel with him as allies sent by King Mickey; Riku and Kairi are his friends, whose paths are closely tied to his. These relationships keep the story personal even as it moves between worlds.
Other characters help mark different parts of the larger conflict. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus are pupils of the same Keyblade Master. Master Xehanort is identified by Square Enix as the main antagonist, seeking to conquer Kingdom Hearts and reshape the worlds. Maleficent has a distinct ambition: to rule all worlds alongside Disney-world villains and control the Heartless. Those goals sit within the broader light-versus-darkness theme, but they are not interchangeable.
Why the story order can be confusing
Release order means experiencing entries in the order they came out; in-world chronological order means arranging story events by when they happen within the fiction. Those are different ways to navigate the series. Release order preserves the way audiences first encountered the story, while a chronological sequence can place an earlier-set story before a game released years before it.

Square Enix’s Japanese support FAQ gives a chronological recommendation for just three entries: KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX- → KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories → KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days. The English wording here is a translation of the Japanese FAQ, not an English original. The recommendation is limited to those three entries; it does not establish a complete chronology for every game, mobile story, movie, or later update. Read Square Enix Japan Support FAQ 66596.
If you are new to the series, use the collections’ sequence as a practical route rather than trying to reorder the entire saga before you begin. The publisher’s advice can help if you specifically want an in-world order for the three named stories, but it should not be mistaken for a franchise-wide timeline.
What the story collections include
Square Enix presents three collections as a route through the saga. The formats differ: a package can combine playable games with remasters, short episodes, movies, and cutscene compilations. In particular, the number of listed entries is not the same as the number of full games to play. Square Enix’s collection page describes the contents as follows:
| Collection | What it contains | Format to note |
|---|---|---|
| HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and Re:coded | 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations in this package, not full playable games. |
| HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | A full-HD remaster of Dream Drop Distance, the χ Back Cover movie about the Foretellers, and the short 0.2 Birth by Sleep episode | A mix of remastered gameplay, a movie, and a short episode that links toward Kingdom Hearts III. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind | The main game and the additional Re Mind chapter | Re Mind presents another side of events during the main game’s climax. |
Where the release history fits
Release dates describe when players first received the games, not when their story events happen. D23 dates the first Japanese release to March 28, 2002, and the U.S. debut to September 17, 2002. It gives Kingdom Hearts II a U.S. release date of March 28, 2006, and Kingdom Hearts III a release date of January 2019. D23’s Kingdom Hearts entry is a useful release-history reference, but those dates are not an in-world timeline.

- KINGDOM HEARTS is a series of role-playing games created through the collaboration of Disney Interactive and Square Enix
Square Enix uses “Dark Seeker Saga” for the connected run from the original game through Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. Its June 13, 2024 Steam announcement dates that release on Steam; the saga label describes the publisher’s framing, not the contents of every individual package.
How to choose a starting route
- Want the original reveal sequence? Start with the games in the sequence presented in the collections. That follows the release-oriented route rather than attempting to rearrange every event by fictional date.
- Want to try Square Enix’s limited chronological recommendation? Follow Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, then 358/2 Days, keeping in mind that the last is a cutscene compilation in the collection.
- Want to play rather than watch? Check the format column before treating every listed entry as a game. The 1.5+2.5 package includes two cutscene-only presentations.
As of October 2, 2026, Square Enix lists physical versions of the collection for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 as due October 8, 2026; its page also says the collection is sold as KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE on Steam. The same page announces the saga’s arrival on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 8, 2026. Check the official page for current availability and the specific platform edition, particularly because the physical-format details listed there are for Switch 2 and PS5.
For a deeper reference beyond the games, Square Enix’s Japanese-language Kingdom Hearts Series Memorial Ultimania is described as a retrospective with character files, world guides, Keyblade and enemy references, and an art gallery. The linked product page is Japanese; it does not establish an English edition. See Square Enix Game Books Online’s Memorial Ultimania page.
