Before Kingdom Hearts III, know that Sora’s conflict with Master Xehanort is framed as the culmination of the Dark Seeker saga, with a Keyblade War looming and a search underway for seven guardians of light. Sora travels with Donald Duck and Goofy. That’s the broad setup—not a complete recap of every game between Kingdom Hearts II and III.
What happened before Kingdom Hearts III?
Square Enix introduced Kingdom Hearts III in 2013 as “the first core sequel to Kingdom Hearts II.” Its announcement described the conflicts surrounding Kingdom Hearts as part of Master Xehanort’s plan to cause a Keyblade War. In that early framing, Sora, Donald, and Goofy travel through Disney worlds in search of the “Key to Return Hearts,” while King Mickey and Riku seek out previous Keyblade wielders.

That announcement is a useful orientation, not a full account of the story as it developed. The safest broad takeaway is that earlier conflicts feed into a larger confrontation with Xehanort. Square Enix’s 2019 retrospective described Kingdom Hearts III as the long-awaited conclusion to the Dark Seeker saga, with Sora facing Xehanort in a final battle.

The story’s central stakes are bigger than any one world: Master Xehanort’s plan threatens to bring about a Keyblade War, and the search for seven guardians of light is part of the effort to meet that danger. These points establish the broad setup; they do not explain every character’s history or the events of every intervening game.

You can start Kingdom Hearts III with this broad context, but it will not supply the detailed history built across the series. Square Enix’s own catch-up material suggests a middle ground: in a 2019 retrospective, the publisher said the five Memory Archives videos summarized the saga and described them as useful context, but “not essential to enjoy the game.” That page discusses the videos in the context of the 2019 demo; it does not confirm that they are accessible on every platform today.
If you want to experience earlier story material rather than rely on a short orientation, the PS4 compilation Kingdom Hearts – The Story So Far is one official route. The North American store listing groups its contents under HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue:

This is a substantial play-and-watch route through earlier story material, not a claim that every release in the franchise is included. Check platform compatibility and the exact edition before buying. Square Enix also lists a KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] as a way to play I–III together, but that listing alone does not establish its precise included editions or whether it is available in a physical format.
