If Kingdom Hearts crashes, refuses to launch, shows a black screen, or ignores your gamepad, first identify the PC release: the Windows 10/11 version and the Steam version do not use the same controller standards. Then follow the publisher’s update, driver, restart, file-check, and reinstall sequence. Steam players have an additional installation-validation step; controller fixes depend on whether the pad presents XInput or DirectInput.
Start by identifying your Kingdom Hearts PC version
Before changing settings, establish where the game came from. Square Enix documents different controller compatibility for its Windows 10/11 release and its Steam release:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Windows 10/11 version: supports XInput gamepads only.
- Steam version: supports both DirectInput and XInput.
Check the launcher or store account you use, then note the exact product name. “Kingdom Hearts on PC” can refer to more than one release, and the troubleshooting menu for a Microsoft Store or Windows build is not the Steam menu. This distinction matters most when a controller works in Windows but not in the game. A pad that exposes only DirectInput is outside the stated compatibility of the Windows 10/11 version, while Steam can accept either standard. It does not mean every controller, feature, or navigation screen is guaranteed to work.
Recommended Free Tools
Square Enix describes support for Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers as partial. Some menus or navigation may still require a keyboard and mouse. Treat that wording as a compatibility boundary, not a promise that every model and function will behave identically.

Before troubleshooting: record the symptom and edition
A short symptom record makes the next step clearer and gives support useful information if you need to escalate. Write down the exact game entry or collection name, storefront, Windows version, and whether the failure occurs before a title screen, during loading, or after gameplay begins. Also note whether the display is completely black, whether sound continues, whether the game closes by itself, and whether the controller fails everywhere or only when the game loses focus.
This separates three different branches:
- Crash or failed launch: the program closes, never opens, or stops during startup.
- Black screen: the game starts but displays no usable image.
- Input failure: the game runs, but buttons, sticks, or menu navigation do not respond.
A controller that is not recognized cannot normally explain a crash before the game opens. Handle the launch branch first, then troubleshoot input after you can reach the game.
When Kingdom Hearts crashes on PC or will not launch
There is no single officially established cause that applies to every Kingdom Hearts PC edition. Use the following sequence, stopping when the problem is resolved. Complete the steps in order so that a simple update or damaged-file check is not confused with a more disruptive reinstall.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Confirm connectivity and install the latest game version
Square Enix’s crash guidance starts with basic state checks. Make sure the PC is online and that the game has installed its latest available update. A partially updated installation can produce startup failures that look like graphics or controller faults. Allow the launcher to finish any pending download before testing again.
Do not skip this check because another game launches normally. Updates are product-specific, and an old Kingdom Hearts build can remain installed even when Windows and other games are current.
2. Update the graphics driver and restart Windows
Install the current graphics driver for your GPU from its manufacturer, then restart the PC. The restart is part of the troubleshooting sequence: it clears pending driver updates and software state that may survive a game-only relaunch. After rebooting, start the game with the same edition and display connection you normally use so the result is comparable.
Steam’s general Windows launch guidance also recommends installing available Windows updates, restarting, and checking that the machine meets the game’s listed requirements. Those are platform-wide precautions, not a diagnosis specific to Kingdom Hearts. If Windows has a pending restart, complete it before repeating a file check or reinstall.
3. Validate the Steam installation
This step applies to the Steam release. Square Enix specifically directs Steam users to validate the installation when the game crashes, fails to start, or opens to a black screen.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the Kingdom Hearts game entry and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam layouts may label this area Local Files.
- Choose the command to Verify integrity of game files or the equivalent validation command shown by your current Steam interface.
- Wait for Steam to finish checking and reacquiring damaged or missing files, then launch the game again.
Steam changes labels periodically, so follow the function of the menu rather than relying on an exact historical label. Let the process finish even if the progress indicator appears to pause. Do not apply this path to a non-Steam edition; its launcher has a different file-repair process.

Validation is a repair check, not an upgrade to the latest game version. If Steam reports that files were replaced, restart the game after the process completes. If it reports no problems and the crash remains, continue with the remaining steps rather than repeatedly validating the same files.
4. Remove avoidable software conflicts
Steam’s general launch guidance advises temporarily disabling non-essential software while testing. This includes overlays, capture utilities, hardware-monitoring tools, and other programs that inject themselves into games. Disable only one category at a time where possible so you can identify a conflict, and restore software after testing.

If the game launches, re-enable programs one at a time to identify which combination matters. This is a general Steam troubleshooting measure. It should not be presented as proof that a particular overlay is the cause of your Kingdom Hearts problem.
5. Check the product’s published requirements
Compare your system with the requirements for the exact product and storefront you own. Requirements listed for the Steam collection KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- are scoped to that product; they should not be copied to every Kingdom Hearts release. A system that meets one collection’s specification may still need a separate check for another edition.
6. Reinstall if the failure continues
If the game remains unstable after updating, restarting, and (for Steam) validating files, Square Enix suggests reinstalling it. Reinstalling is more disruptive than validation, so make sure saved data is backed up according to the storage method used by your edition before removing the installation. Record your storefront and product name first so you reinstall the same release rather than a different entry.
After installation completes, apply any available game update, restart Windows if requested, and test before adding optional overlays or remapping utilities. A clean test gives support a clearer result if the problem returns.

If a reinstall does not resolve the crash or launch failure, contact Square Enix support. Include the diagnostic files requested in its guidance:
- MSINFO: press Windows key plus
R, entermsinfo32, and open System Information. Choose the option to save the report as an.nfofile. Allow the utility time to finish collecting information before closing it. - DxDiag: press Windows key plus
R, enterdxdiag, wait for the tool to complete its checks, and select Save All Information.
Attach both files to the support request along with the exact Kingdom Hearts edition, Windows version, GPU and driver version, and the point at which the failure occurs. The reports give support a reproducible system profile instead of a generic “won’t launch” description. Include whether Steam validation completed successfully, whether non-essential software was disabled, and whether reinstalling changed the symptom.
Fixing a black screen on startup
A black screen belongs on the same launch-failure branch rather than being treated as a controller problem. For Steam, first validate the installation through the game’s Properties and Installed Files (or Local Files) menu. Also complete the shared steps: confirm the game is online and current, update the graphics driver, restart Windows, and check Windows updates.

Pay attention to whether audio continues. A continuing soundtrack can indicate that the program is running even though the display is unusable, while an immediate close is a broader startup failure. That observation does not identify a universal cause, but it helps you describe the symptom accurately.
If the black screen persists, test with non-essential background software disabled. Reinstall the game only after those checks. If the issue remains after reinstalling, send Square Enix the MSINFO and DxDiag reports described above. The available publisher guidance does not establish one universal black-screen cause or a guaranteed graphics setting that fixes every edition.
Why your controller is not working in Kingdom Hearts on PC
Controller troubleshooting starts with two questions: which PC release are you running, and which input standard does the controller provide? Windows recognizing a device only proves that the operating system can see it; it does not prove that a particular Kingdom Hearts build accepts its input standard.
Windows 10/11 release: use XInput
The Windows 10/11 version supports XInput gamepads only. If your current controller presents DirectInput without an XInput mode, the game may not recognize it even though Windows detects the device. An XInput-compatible Xbox-style controller for Windows is a reasonable hardware option for this specific compatibility gap, but it is not a certification of any particular model and cannot repair a defective cable, Bluetooth connection, driver, or game configuration.
When comparing products, look for an explicit XInput statement rather than relying only on a console name or a claim that the pad works with Windows. Confirm the current listing and connection method before buying. A purchase is relevant only when the existing pad is outside the Windows 10/11 input requirement; it is not a remedy for a crash, black screen, or damaged installation.
Steam release: DirectInput and XInput are supported
The Steam version supports both DirectInput and XInput. That broader input-standard support does not override Square Enix’s partial-support warning for Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers. A controller can be visible to Steam yet still require keyboard and mouse for some game navigation.
If you have a choice of modes, test one input path at a time and note which mode Steam reports. Avoid changing several remapping layers simultaneously; otherwise you cannot tell whether the game is receiving the controller directly or through Steam Input.
Check the simple connection path first
- Connect the controller before starting the game and confirm that Windows or Steam sees it.
- If it is wireless, check its charge and pairing state; if practical, test a wired connection to separate radio problems from game input problems.
- Close other controller-remapping or virtual-device tools while testing, because they can change which input standard the game receives.
- On Steam, check the controller’s detected layout and test the same pad in another game. A failure across multiple games points away from a Kingdom Hearts-only setting.
- Use the keyboard and mouse to reach menus if the game accepts gameplay input but not every navigation command.
These checks identify the connection path; they do not turn a DirectInput-only device into XInput on the Windows 10/11 release. If the controller works in another game but not Kingdom Hearts, record the storefront, input mode, and the exact screen where input stops responding.
When Steam controller input disappears in the background
Square Enix documents a specific Steam case: controller input is lost while the game is running in the background. For that scenario, open Steam’s Controller Settings and enable the option that uses the controller as PC controls through Desktop Layout. The wording can vary with Steam updates, so look for the setting that explicitly assigns the controller as PC controls through Desktop Layout.

Return to the game and test again after enabling it. This setting addresses background-input handoff; it is not a universal fix for an unsupported input standard, a broken controller, or every in-game recognition failure. If input fails while the game is focused as well as in the background, return to the version and XInput/DirectInput checks instead of assuming Desktop Layout is the answer.
What “partial controller support” means in practice
Square Enix’s partial-support description has three practical consequences:
- A listed controller family is not a guarantee that every model or connection method works.
- Button prompts and available functions may differ between Xbox-style, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input paths.
- Keyboard and mouse may be required for menus or other navigation even when gameplay input works.
Do not treat a controller purchase as a fix for crashes or launch errors. Hardware choice is relevant only after you have identified an input-standard mismatch or a controller that is not supplying a usable signal. No particular model is certified by the cited support guidance for every release.

These are the store’s specifications for that collection, listed with its 2024 release information. The 4 GB and 8 GB memory figures describe minimum and recommended configurations, not a guarantee that every system with those amounts will launch successfully. Likewise, 60 GB is the listed available-space requirement, so leave room for the installation process and updates rather than treating the number as a universal storage rule for every edition.
If you own a different Kingdom Hearts PC product or a different storefront build, check that product’s own requirements instead of importing this table. Do not use this table to diagnose a controller mismatch; input compatibility is governed by the release and controller standard described above.
A decision tree for the most common symptoms
The game crashes after launching
- Confirm the PC is online and the game is updated.
- Update the graphics driver and restart Windows.
- If it is Steam, validate the installation.
- Temporarily disable non-essential background software and test again.
- Check the requirements for the exact product.
- Reinstall if the crash continues, then contact Square Enix with MSINFO and DxDiag if reinstalling fails.
The game never starts
- Check Windows updates, the game’s update status, and the Steam-listed requirements when applicable.
- Restart after installing updates or drivers.
- Use Steam’s file-validation path for the Steam release.
- Test without non-essential software running.
- Reinstall and escalate with diagnostic reports if the failure remains.
The game opens to a black screen
- For Steam, validate the installation first.
- Update the graphics driver and restart.
- Check Windows updates and close non-essential software.
- Confirm whether audio continues and record that detail for support.
- Reinstall if the screen remains black.
- Send MSINFO and DxDiag to Square Enix when support is required.
The controller works in Windows but not in the game
- Identify the release: Windows 10/11 or Steam.
- Identify the pad’s input standard: XInput, DirectInput, or Steam Input.
- For Windows 10/11, use an XInput gamepad; DirectInput-only devices are outside the stated support.
- For Steam, test both DirectInput and XInput paths and remember that support is partial.
- If input disappears only while the Steam game is in the background, enable the Desktop Layout PC-controls option in Steam Controller Settings.
- Use keyboard and mouse for navigation when the game requires it.
What not to assume
- Do not assume every Kingdom Hearts PC edition shares the 1.5+2.5 ReMIX Steam requirements.
- Do not assume a controller listed by family name has complete feature support.
- Do not assume Steam’s validation menu has exactly the same label after a client update.
- Do not assume a controller incompatibility explains a crash or black screen; those symptoms follow the launch troubleshooting branch.
- Do not assume one fix works for every edition. The official evidence supports a sequence of checks, not a universal root cause.
- Do not assume a controller that Windows detects is automatically XInput-compatible.
- Do not assume Desktop Layout fixes input that is lost while the game is focused; Square Enix’s instruction is for the documented background-input case.
- Do not assume a listed minimum specification guarantees a particular frame rate or successful launch on every configuration.
When to contact support
Contact Square Enix after completing the relevant update, driver, restart, validation, background-software, and reinstall steps. State the storefront and exact product name, describe whether the symptom is a crash, failed launch, black screen, or input loss, and attach the MSINFO .nfo file plus the DxDiag file. That gives support the information requested in the publisher’s troubleshooting process and separates a game-specific failure from a broader Windows or hardware problem.
In your message, include the sequence you already tried and the result of each step. For controller cases, identify XInput, DirectInput, or Steam Input, the controller family, whether it is wired or wireless, and whether keyboard navigation still works. For launch cases, include the point of failure and whether Steam validation or reinstalling changed anything. Avoid sending only a screenshot or a general statement that the game “doesn’t work”; the diagnostic reports and precise symptom description are more useful.

What should I do if Kingdom Hearts will not launch?
Check Windows and game updates, restart after updates or driver installation, compare your system with the exact product’s requirements, and use Steam’s installation-validation command for a Steam copy. If the failure remains, reinstall and provide the requested diagnostic reports to support.
How do I fix a black screen on startup?
For Steam, validate the installation through Properties and Installed Files (or Local Files). Also update the graphics driver, restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, and test with non-essential software disabled. Reinstall if necessary; there is no single guaranteed black-screen setting for every edition.
Why is my controller not working in Kingdom Hearts on PC?
First identify the release and the controller’s input standard. Windows 10/11 supports XInput gamepads only; Steam supports DirectInput and XInput. Square Enix describes Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input support as partial, so keyboard and mouse may still be needed for some navigation.
Will a DirectInput controller work on the Windows 10/11 version?
DirectInput-only devices are outside the stated Windows 10/11 support, which is XInput-only. An XInput-compatible Xbox-style controller is a reasonable option, but no specific model is guaranteed to fix every hardware or configuration problem.
What if my Steam controller stops working when the game is in the background?
Open Steam Controller Settings and enable the option that uses the controller as PC controls through Desktop Layout. This addresses the documented background-input case, not every controller failure.
How much RAM and storage does the Steam 1.5+2.5 collection require?
The Steam listing specifies 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB recommended, and 60 GB available storage for KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-. It also lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or later, an Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600, a GTX 750 or Radeon RX 460, DirectX 11, and 30 FPS at 1280×720 minimum versus 60 FPS at 1920×1080 recommended. These figures apply to that named product only.
What files should I send Square Enix?
Create an MSINFO report with msinfo32 and save it as an .nfo file, then open dxdiag and choose Save All Information. Attach both files with your exact edition, Windows version, hardware details, and a description of the failed step.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam file validation work for the Windows 10/11 version?
The cited validation instructions are specifically for the Steam release. A Windows 10/11 edition uses its own launcher or store process, so do not assume the Steam menu path exists there.
Can keyboard and mouse be required even when a controller works?
Yes. Square Enix describes controller support as partial and notes that some navigation may require keyboard and mouse.
Is a new controller a fix for crashes or black screens?
No. Controller choice addresses input compatibility. Crashes, failed launches, and black screens follow the update, driver, restart, validation, software-conflict, reinstall, and support sequence.
Are the 1.5+2.5 Steam requirements valid for every Kingdom Hearts PC game?
No. The listed requirements are for the specifically named KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- Steam product and should not be treated as franchise-wide specifications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Match the troubleshooting step to the release you own. Update the game and graphics driver, restart, validate Steam files when applicable, test without non-essential software, and reinstall only after those checks. For controllers, Windows 10/11 requires XInput while Steam accepts XInput and DirectInput, with only partial feature support. If the problem remains, send Square Enix the requested MSINFO and DxDiag reports.
