That is the best default for a newcomer because it protects major reveals while introducing the prequel-era characters and mythology when their context is most useful. A literal story chronology is a different route: the fiction begins long before Sora, and several entries overlap or deliberately explain earlier events after you have seen their consequences.

What “Kingdom Hearts games in order” actually means
There are three different ways to order the series:
Recommended Free Tools
- First-play order: the sequence that best preserves reveals and keeps the central Sora-led plot understandable.
- Release order: the order in which Square Enix launched the games and films. This is useful for studying how the story and mechanics evolved, but it places some side stories before their most informative context.
- Story chronology: the order of events inside the fiction. This starts in the distant age of the Foretellers and Keyblade wielders, not with Sora’s first adventure.
The recommended route below follows the first axis: spoiler protection and narrative comprehension. It is editorial guidance, not an order mandated by Square Enix. The series is directed by Tetsuya Nomura and developed and published by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney; its official premise centers on light overcoming darkness through friendship, with Sora traveling alongside Donald and Goofy.

The recommended first-play sequence
-
KINGDOM HEARTS Final Mix
Begin with Sora’s introduction, the worlds connected by the Keyblade, and the basic conflict between light and darkness. The Final Mix edition is the expanded version used in the modern HD collections.
-
KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories
Play this immediately after the first game. Its Castle Oblivion story explains the transition into Kingdom Hearts II and introduces characters and concepts that the second numbered game assumes you recognize.
-
KINGDOM HEARTS II Final Mix
This continues the main Sora arc and pays off the setup from Re:Chain of Memories. Do not skip its opening section: the Roxas material is intentionally structured to reframe what you think the sequel is about.

KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days
Experience this after Kingdom Hearts II for the cleanest reveal-conscious route. Its events overlap the period around the first two games, but its emotional and character information lands better once you understand the Organization and the identities involved.

KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –
This short episode links the prequel-era material to Kingdom Hearts III. Treat it as the final lead-in rather than as a replacement for Birth by Sleep.
-
KINGDOM HEARTS III, then Re Mind
Finish the base game before starting Re Mind. The DLC takes place around the climax and revisits that period from another perspective, so playing it first would spoil the intended structure.
What each collection entry represents
The names in the sequence are not all the same kind of release. A modern bundle may contain a full playable game, a short episode, a movie or a cutscene compilation.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Entry | Format in the modern collections | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|

| Re:Chain of Memories | Full playable game | Bridge between the first and second numbered games |
| Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix | Full playable game | Main continuation of Sora’s arc |
| 358/2 Days | HD cutscene compilation | Roxas, the Organization and the overlapping period around Kingdom Hearts II |
| Birth by Sleep Final Mix | Full playable game | Earlier-era story of Terra, Aqua and Ventus |
| Re:coded | HD cutscene compilation | Post-Kingdom Hearts II information and setup |
| Dream Drop Distance HD | Full playable game | Mark of Mastery exam and pre-Kingdom Hearts III escalation |
| χ Back Cover | HD movie | Foretellers and the distant origins of the conflict |
| 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – | Short playable episode | Link from the prequel material toward Kingdom Hearts III |
| Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind | Full playable game plus DLC | Close of the Dark Seeker Saga’s central Xehanort-focused arc |
Consequently, the collection should not be described as twelve full playable games. Two entries are presented as HD cutscene compilations, one as a movie and one as a short episode.

Why not start with the earliest story?
A chronological opening with the Foretellers or the Birth by Sleep cast can look attractive, but it changes the way the series reveals information. Later-released prequels intentionally explain people, symbols and events that the numbered games first present as mysteries. Seeing those explanations before the mysteries exist removes some of the intended dramatic effect.
The first-play route also prevents a common comprehension problem: the series introduces similar names, vessels, replicas, Nobodies and different versions of characters across several eras. The numbered games establish the emotional anchors first; the prequels then clarify how those identities and relationships came to be.
Kingdom Hearts story chronology: the responsible version
The broad in-universe sequence is clear, but a completely precise list for every mobile chapter is not established by the official English overview and collection pages. Use the following as a reader-friendly synthesis, not as a claim that Square Enix has published one definitive chapter-by-chapter timeline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Story era | Main material | Chronology note |
|---|---|---|
| Distant Keyblade age | χ Back Cover and the wider χ/Union χ mythology | Concerns the Foretellers and the origins of the later conflict; the mobile material is not mapped here to individual console scenes. |
| Additional ancient-era stories | Dark Road and related mobile-era material | Belongs to the older Keyblade history, but its exact placement relative to every other mobile chapter should not be stated with false precision. |
| Prequel generation | Birth by Sleep | Set well before Sora’s first journey and establishes Terra, Aqua, Ventus and the earlier stage of Master Xehanort’s plans. |
| Overlapping first-game period | Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days | 358/2 Days overlaps events around the first two numbered games, which is why its recommended first-play position is later than its strict event placement. |
| After the first Sora arc | Kingdom Hearts II, Re:coded and Dream Drop Distance | These entries move from the Organization aftermath into preparation for the next major confrontation. |
| Immediate lead-in and finale | 0.2, Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind | 0.2 is explicitly positioned as a link toward Kingdom Hearts III; Re Mind expands the climax rather than beginning a separate saga. |
A chronological replay route for experienced players
If you have already completed the series and want events arranged by their broad fictional sequence, use this order:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- χ Back Cover
- The relevant ancient-era χ/Union χ and Dark Road story material, treating the exact mobile ordering as unresolved where the official sources do not specify it
- Birth by Sleep Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
- Re:Chain of Memories
- 358/2 Days in its overlapping period
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
- Re:coded
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –
- Kingdom Hearts III, followed by Re Mind
This replay order optimizes event sequence, not surprise. For a first run, the earlier recommendation remains safer because it lets each prequel answer questions raised by the main arc.
Collection, platform and access details
The practical all-in-one route is KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III]. It bundles HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III with Re Mind. The reviewed package list does not establish that every mobile-story chapter is included.
| Item | Current detail |
|---|---|
| Collection contents | HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX; HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue; Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind |
| Availability | Square Enix announced physical and digital editions; store availability can vary by region. |
| Physical-edition requirement | Playing the physical version requires an internet connection to download additional data. |
| Announced platforms and date | Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store on Windows, with an announced release date of October 8, 2026. |
| Native play note | The announcement describes the three collections as native, non-cloud versions on current-generation consoles; HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is also native on Nintendo Switch. |
Check the regional storefront before buying, especially if you need a specific physical edition or language option. An internet connection is still necessary for the additional-data download even when you purchase a disc.
Where Kingdom Hearts IV fits
Square Enix describes the Dark Seeker Saga as running from the original Kingdom Hearts through Kingdom Hearts III with Re Mind. That makes Kingdom Hearts III the close of the central Xehanort-focused sequence, not the end of the franchise.
Kingdom Hearts IV is announced for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The current official game listing gives a late-2027 release window, but that is a target rather than a guaranteed date and should be reconfirmed before publication or purchase planning. It belongs to a later chapter and should not be inserted between any of the games in the completed first-play route.
Quick Recap
Tips that prevent the most common order mistakes
- Do not skip Re:Chain of Memories solely because it uses a different combat system. Its story is the connective tissue between the first two numbered games.
- Do not treat every collection item as playable. For 358/2 Days and Re:coded, the modern package supplies HD cutscene compilations rather than the original full game formats.
- Keep Re Mind after the base Kingdom Hearts III ending. Its perspective and timing assume that you already know the main conclusion.
- Expect overlapping timelines. A game can be chronologically earlier while still being narratively better after a later release.
- Separate console chronology from mobile chronology. The official English pages support the broad ancient-era placement, but they do not settle every mobile chapter’s exact position relative to individual console scenes.
- Use the collection as an access solution, not a promise of completeness. It covers the listed HD games, movies and compilations, but the reviewed package description does not claim to contain all mobile-story content.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Use this route |
|---|---|
| First time, minimal spoilers | Final Mix → Re:Chain of Memories → Kingdom Hearts II → 358/2 Days → Birth by Sleep → Re:coded → Dream Drop Distance → χ Back Cover → 0.2 → Kingdom Hearts III → Re Mind |
| Study events inside the fiction | χ Back Cover and ancient-era material → Birth by Sleep → the Sora-era entries, while treating overlapping and mobile placement cautiously |
| Play only the central numbered arc | Kingdom Hearts → Re:Chain of Memories → Kingdom Hearts II → Dream Drop Distance → Kingdom Hearts III → Re Mind, then return for the side stories |
| Own the main modern package | KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III], after confirming regional edition details and the physical-disc download requirement |
