The best smoother-start setup depends on your platform. On PC, begin with a preset your hardware can reasonably handle, then reduce demanding visual options one at a time while testing in the places where you play. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, install Patch 1.9.7, then decide whether the higher-resolution textures and models are worth the additional GPU load. Whichever platform you use, start with the standard difficulty unless you deliberately want the extra navigation and survival pressure associated with Hardcore.
There is no single “best” preset for every system, and the published requirements are not a promise of a fixed frame rate. Use the steps below to establish a stable baseline without applying settings intended for a different console generation or game version.

Identify your platform and game version first
Kingdom Come: Deliverance has different performance considerations on PC, current-generation consoles, and older consoles. Before changing anything, confirm which hardware is running the original game and whether it has received the platform-specific update available for it.

PC
PC settings are tied to your processor, graphics card, memory, storage, operating system, drivers, and the particular store build you use. PLAION’s published requirements are a starting point for judging whether your computer is in the right range; they are not benchmark results and do not guarantee smooth play in every town, forest, or combat encounter.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
Patch 1.9.7 is specifically documented for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its performance and image-quality claims should not be transferred to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch
The official support index separates these platforms from the next-generation release. The available material does not provide a complete settings walkthrough for them, so treat advice for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as inapplicable to these systems.
Check whether your PC is in the published hardware range
The following figures come from PLAION Support’s “System Requirements | Kingdom Come: Deliverance” page. They describe the original PC release and should be read as requirements tiers, not measured frame-rate guarantees.
| Requirement tier | Processor | Graphics | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Phenom II X4 940 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 | 8 GB RAM | 70 GB; SSD recommended |
| Recommended | Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD FX-8350 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 | 16 GB RAM | 90 GB; SSD recommended |
Meeting the recommended tier does not establish a locked frame rate, because performance varies with resolution, visual options, drivers, background software, and the game location being rendered. A computer close to minimum may need a more conservative image-quality target, while a newer system may have headroom that is useful only after you test it in your own save.

The requirements page lists Windows 7, 8, and 10-era operating systems. Do not assume that listing means the current Steam client supports every one of those versions; check the store client’s current operating-system policy before troubleshooting the game itself.
A cautious PC tuning procedure
Because no authoritative, measured ranking of every in-menu option is available, the safest approach is controlled iteration rather than copying a universal configuration. Change one category at a time, test the same type of gameplay, and keep the setting that gives you the best balance.
- Record a baseline. Launch a representative save and note how the game behaves while moving through a busy settlement, travelling through the countryside, and entering combat. Pay attention to hitching, delayed input, sudden image softness, and sustained slowdowns rather than judging the opening minutes alone.
- Start from an appropriate in-game preset. Choose the preset that matches your hardware tier as a starting point, not as a final answer. If your computer is below the minimum figures, expect to make compromises and avoid treating the recommended preset as a target.
- Set a practical display target. Use the resolution and display mode that your monitor and graphics card can sustain consistently. A lower, stable target is generally less frustrating than a higher target that produces repeated stalls, but the game’s published material does not establish one universally correct resolution.
- Reduce demanding visual options gradually. Lower one visual category, return to the same representative locations, and compare the result. The available official information does not identify a tested order or quantify the frame-rate gain from any particular option, so do not rely on claims that one named slider always provides the biggest improvement.
- Separate stutter from a low frame rate. A consistently slow image and brief pauses can have different causes. If the image is generally fluid but pauses when entering new areas, test after closing unnecessary background applications and allow the game to finish any first-run work before judging the result. If the image is continuously slow, continue reducing the visual load rather than changing controls.
- Keep a change log. Write down each change and whether it helped in towns, wilderness, and combat. This makes it easy to reverse a setting that improves one location but makes another look unnecessarily poor.
- Stop when the experience is stable. Do not keep lowering quality after the game feels consistent. Extra reductions can make the image worse without solving the problem you actually have.
These steps deliberately avoid promising a particular frame rate. No independent benchmark or firsthand test establishes a guaranteed value for a specific preset, graphics card, or operating-system combination.
What Patch 1.9.7 changes on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The Deep Silver and PLAION Patch 1.9.7 notes describe a current-generation presentation aimed at smoother performance and higher visual quality. The notes say the update targets 60 FPS at an Ultra-quality target setting. “Target” matters: it is not a promise that every scene remains at 60 FPS.

Dynamic resolution in demanding areas
The update implements dynamic resolution so the game can reduce its internal rendering resolution in GPU-demanding areas. That behavior is intended to protect frame-rate consistency by allowing image resolution to vary rather than holding the highest internal resolution at all times.
Higher-resolution textures and models
The game settings include a toggle for higher-resolution textures and models. Turn the higher-resolution assets on when visual detail is your priority and the console remains comfortable in your normal play areas. If you notice more frequent slowdowns or prefer steadier motion, turn that option off and compare the same locations again.
Native and output resolutions
The patch notes describe a 2560×1440 native render resolution and an upscaled 3840×2160 output. Native rendering and output resolution are different: the console can render internally at 1440p and upscale the final image to a 4K signal. A 4K television receiving that signal does not mean every pixel was rendered natively at 3840×2160.

- Confirm that the game is updated to Patch 1.9.7 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Play with the higher-resolution textures and models enabled for a short, representative session.
- Check busy settlements, travel, and combat rather than judging a quiet interior.
- If motion is less consistent than you want, disable the higher-resolution asset toggle and repeat the comparison.
- Keep the setting that best matches your priority: steadier performance or higher asset detail.
Do not apply these options or the 60-FPS target to PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. The patch documentation names only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for these improvements.

Choose a difficulty that supports your first hours
Performance settings cannot remove the learning curve created by navigation, combat, and resource management. For a first playthrough, the standard mode is the least disruptive place to learn the systems. You can increase the challenge later without having to learn the map and combat under the most restrictive conditions at the same time.
A 2019 response on the Kingdom Come: Deliverance community forum characterizes Hardcore as a mode that removes aids and applies debuffs. That is a historical player description, not a current official difficulty reference, so treat it as guidance rather than a complete specification of every rule.
When standard mode is the better starting point
- You are unfamiliar with the game’s navigation and want assistance while learning routes.
- You want to understand combat timing before adding extra penalties.
- You are already troubleshooting performance or controls and do not want difficulty systems to obscure the problem.
When Hardcore makes sense
- You have finished or substantially learned the standard experience.
- You actively want fewer aids and additional debuffs.
- You are comfortable spending more time orienting yourself and recovering from mistakes.
Hardcore is an optional challenge, not a requirement for playing correctly and not a performance optimization.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of changing everything
The game is slow everywhere
Return to the baseline procedure, choose a less demanding preset, and reduce visual load in small steps. Verify that your PC is not below the published minimum tier. If it is, a stable result may require substantial compromises, and the published requirements cannot predict the exact outcome.

The game pauses when entering new areas
Compare behavior after closing nonessential background programs and after installing the game on an SSD if one is available. PLAION recommends an SSD in both requirements tiers, but the requirement page does not quantify the improvement or guarantee that storage alone removes every hitch.
PS5 or Xbox Series X|S feels less consistent than expected
Confirm that Patch 1.9.7 is installed, then test with the higher-resolution textures and models disabled. Dynamic resolution is designed to respond to GPU demand, so a demanding scene can still vary in image sharpness or performance.
The image looks softer after changes
Undo the most recent visual reduction and test another category instead. On current-generation consoles, remember that the documented 2560×1440 native render can be upscaled to a 3840×2160 output; softness is not proof that the television is receiving the wrong signal.

Edition and platform checks before you buy or reinstall
Steam lists both the base game and Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition. Edition names do not replace the platform check: confirm whether the product is PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or an older-console version before assuming that a patch or setting applies. If you are buying a physical or digital copy, verify the current store listing and platform compatibility at the time of purchase.
