If a new Kindle is defective, first open the order and use the return option or contact the seller. If a return is unavailable or you are making a warranty claim, check the exact model and marketplace in Amazon’s current warranty table, then contact the applicable customer-service channel. A covered claim may result in repair, a new or refurbished equivalent, or a full or partial refund; Amazon’s terms do not promise that every defective Kindle will be replaced with a brand-new unit.
What to do first when a new Kindle is defective
Do not ship the device immediately or buy a replacement before checking the remedies attached to your order. The correct path depends on four facts: where you bought the Kindle, which marketplace handled the sale, the exact Kindle model, and whether the order page still offers a return.

- Identify the purchase source. Decide whether the order was placed through Amazon.com or with a third-party retailer. A Kindle bought from another retailer is subject to that retailer’s return policy, although a manufacturer or Amazon warranty may still apply.
- Open the order details. Review the return button, the reason choices, any deadline shown, and the instructions for shipping or drop-off. Amazon’s published FAQ does not establish one return deadline for every device, seller, condition, or purchase date, so use the date displayed for your order rather than a general rule.
- Record the fault. Write down what happens, when it happens, and whether it occurs after charging, setup, a software update, or a particular action. Photos or a short video can help if support asks you to demonstrate the defect.
- Protect your information. Back up anything stored on the Kindle, remove personal information before sending it away, and do not provide payment or account credentials in response to an unsolicited message.
For an Amazon.com purchase, Amazon directs customers to its Amazon Device Return FAQs, the Online Return Center, or Customer Support. The order page is the best place to start because it shows the options that apply to that transaction.

A return and a warranty claim are different processes. A return is tied to the order’s return policy and the choices Amazon or the retailer shows for that transaction. A warranty claim is tied to the device’s coverage category and warranty terms. Either route may be appropriate, but the available remedy can differ.

| Situation | What to check | Likely next action |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon.com order still shows a return option | The exact deadline, return reason, refund or replacement choices, and shipping instructions in the order | Start the order return promptly and follow the generated label or drop-off instructions |
| Return option is missing, expired, or does not resolve the defect | The Kindle model in Amazon’s current warranty table and the applicable marketplace | Contact the relevant customer-service channel and request warranty instructions |
| Purchase was from a third-party retailer | That retailer’s return policy, invoice, seller identity, and any separate warranty provider | Contact the retailer first; ask which warranty channel should handle a hardware defect |
| Device is covered by the reviewed U.S. 90-day terms | The 90-day warranty document and its return instructions | Contact Customer Service before shipping; the terms allow several possible remedies |
There is no universal “return first” or “warranty first” answer without the order details. If the order page offers a straightforward return for a newly delivered faulty device, it is usually the clearest transaction-specific path. If that option is unavailable, ask support to classify the problem under the applicable warranty.
How long is a Kindle under warranty?
Amazon’s U.S. Device Warranty for Kindle E‑Reader and Accessories table, updated October 1, 2026, lists coverage by model and category. The duration is not identical for every Kindle, and the table should be checked against the exact device rather than the product family name alone.
| Coverage listed in the U.S. table | Who it applies to | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One-year limited warranty | Many Kindle e-readers and accessories listed in the table | Confirm the precise model and category; “many” does not mean every Kindle |
| Two-year Worry-Free Guarantee | Specified Kindle Kids models | Only the Kids models identified by Amazon receive this duration |
| 90-day limited warranty | Devices or accessories specifically covered by the 90-day terms | Do not generalize this period to models listed under a one-year or two-year category |
The table is U.S.-specific and was current on October 1, 2026. Warranty coverage can differ by country, seller, edition, and marketplace. If your order was not placed through Amazon’s U.S. marketplace, use the warranty information supplied for that transaction.
Step-by-step: use the Amazon order return option
Follow this route when the order page provides a return or replacement workflow.

- Sign in to the account that placed the order. Open your orders and select the Kindle. If you bought through a household, business, or different account, locate the account that owns the order.
- Read the displayed choices. Select the option that accurately describes the problem, such as a device that will not power on, has a damaged display, or is not functioning as advertised. Do not choose a reason that hides a different fault; the description helps determine handling.
- Check whether the page offers a replacement or refund. The choices are transaction-specific. A replacement shown on one order may not appear on another, and the page may offer only a refund or return.
- Review the deadline and method. Save the date shown by Amazon and note whether the label, carrier, packaging, or drop-off method is specified. Do not assume a standard number of days from delivery.
- Prepare the Kindle. Deregister it, remove personal data, and include the accessories requested by the return instructions. Keep proof of shipment or drop-off.
- Follow the generated instructions exactly. Use the label and destination supplied for that order. Do not send the device to an address found elsewhere or ship it before the return is authorized.
- Monitor the order status. Retain the tracking number, photos of the packaged device, and any case number until the refund or replacement is complete.
If the return workflow fails, the page gives no usable option, or the problem continues after a replacement, contact Amazon Customer Support through the order rather than opening an unrelated claim.
How to make a Kindle warranty claim
Use warranty service when the order return is unavailable or support tells you the defect must be handled under warranty.
- Verify the model and purchase details. Have the model name, serial number if requested, order number or receipt, purchase date, seller, and marketplace ready. The warranty table’s category must match the actual device.
- Describe the defect precisely. State what you expected, what occurs instead, whether the issue is repeatable, and whether it began on first use. Explain any troubleshooting already attempted without guessing at a hardware diagnosis.
- Ask which warranty terms apply. Confirm the coverage duration and whether the case is being handled under a one-year, two-year Kids, or 90-day category. The 90-day document is not a blanket rule for all Kindle models.
- Request shipping and packaging instructions. Customer Service should tell you where and how to send the device, what accessories to include, and whether a label or authorization is required. Wait for those instructions before shipping.
- Back up and erase personal data. Save any notes or files you need, deregister the device if instructed, and remove account information. A warranty shipment should not contain data you would not want a service center to receive.
- Keep documentation. Save the case number, email instructions, tracking information, and a copy of the device’s serial number. These records make it easier to resolve a lost shipment or an incorrect remedy.
- Review the proposed remedy. Warranty terms may authorize repair, an equivalent replacement, or a refund. Ask support what option is being offered in your case and whether the replacement is new or refurbished.
Can Amazon replace a defective Kindle with a new one?
Not necessarily. The reviewed U.S. 90-day warranty terms say:
"During this warranty period, if a defect arises in the Device, and you follow the instructions for returning the Device, we will at our option, to the extent permitted by law, either (i) repair the Device using either new or refurbished parts, (ii) replace the Device with a new or refurbished Device that is equivalent to the Device to be replaced, or (iii) refund to you all or part of the purchase price of the Device."

- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
That language means a covered claim can end in one of three broad outcomes:
- Repair: Amazon may repair the Kindle, using new or refurbished parts.
- Equivalent replacement: Amazon may send a new or refurbished device equivalent to the defective one. The terms do not promise a brand-new, higher-capacity, or newer-generation model.
- Refund: Amazon may refund all or part of the purchase price, subject to the terms and applicable law.
The warranty is therefore a remedy framework, not a new-for-new exchange guarantee. If a specific replacement matters to you, ask Customer Service what inventory and remedy are available before you send the original device.
What if the Kindle came from a third-party retailer?
Amazon states that purchases made through a retail store or another retailer are subject to that retailer’s return policy. Start with the seller named on your receipt or order confirmation and ask for its defective-device process. The seller may require proof of purchase, a particular form, or shipment to a different address.

Prepare the Kindle before any return or service shipment
Preparation protects both your privacy and your claim.
- Back up first. Copy personal documents, notes, or other files you need. A repair or replacement process may result in loss of locally stored data.
- Deregister the device. Remove the Kindle from your account using the device or account controls, following Amazon’s instructions. This prevents the next user from accessing your account.
- Remove personal information. Check for saved Wi-Fi details, downloaded documents, browser data, and account credentials. Follow the support channel’s reset instructions rather than improvising if the screen is unusable.
- Include only what the instructions request. Amazon’s return guidance may require included accessories. A warranty case may have different packaging rules, so wait for the case-specific list.
- Document condition and contents. Photograph the Kindle, serial label, accessories, and sealed package. Keep the tracking receipt until the case closes.
- Do not ship without authorization. An unrequested shipment can go to the wrong facility or lack the information needed to connect it to your claim.
Common problems that delay a Kindle return or replacement
Assuming every Kindle has the same coverage
Kindle coverage varies by model and category. A one-year term listed for many e-readers does not establish one year for every accessory or Kids edition, and the two-year Kids guarantee applies only to specified models. Check the current table with the exact model number.
Using a generic return deadline
Amazon’s reviewed FAQ does not set one deadline for every purchase. The date in your order is the controlling practical reference. If no date or button appears, contact the seller or Customer Support promptly and explain when the defect was discovered.
Expecting a brand-new replacement
The 90-day terms permit repair, a new or refurbished equivalent, or a full or partial refund. Ask which remedy is available instead of assuming that “replacement” means factory-new.

Sending the device before receiving instructions
Return centers and warranty channels can require different labels, destinations, and accessory lists. Wait for the applicable instructions and retain proof of shipment.
Leaving the Kindle registered
A registered device can retain account and personal information. Back up what you need, deregister the Kindle, and remove personal data before handing it to a carrier or service center.
Contacting the wrong party
An Amazon.com order should be handled through its order page or Amazon Customer Support. A third-party purchase starts with that retailer, while warranty service may involve a separate provider. Confirm the seller and marketplace before opening a case.

- Amazon.com purchase and return button visible: read the displayed deadline and start the return or replacement workflow.
- Amazon.com purchase but no workable return: check the model in the current U.S. warranty table and contact Customer Support for warranty instructions.
- Third-party retailer purchase: contact the retailer first, then verify any applicable warranty channel.
- Unsure of the coverage period: do not rely on the 90-day term; match the exact model to the table.
- Ready to send the device: back up data, deregister it, remove personal information, include only requested accessories, and use the supplied shipping instructions.
Amazon’s customer-service FAQ confirms that new and Certified Refurbished Amazon devices are covered by a limited warranty, whether bought through Amazon.com or in a retail store, but the specific duration and remedy still depend on the applicable terms. Read the current return FAQ and Kindle warranty table for your device, and use the 90-Day Limited Warranty for Amazon Devices or Accessories only when that 90-day category applies.
