Choose Kobo if library borrowing outside the U.S., native EPUB support, DRM-free files, or flexible sideloading matters more. Neither platform works with every library, country, or title, so verify your library system and the books you borrow before buying.
The short answer
Kindle and Kobo are both capable e-readers, but they are built around different ecosystems. Kindle puts Amazon’s store, account, delivery system, and Kindle Unlimited subscription at the center. Kobo combines its own store with broader file-format support, USB and cloud sideloading, and built-in OverDrive borrowing on most of its e-readers.

That difference matters more than small hardware variations. If your reading life is mainly commercial purchases from one storefront, Kindle is usually simpler. If you mix purchases with library loans, obtain books from several stores, or keep a collection of EPUB files, Kobo is usually the more adaptable choice. Library support is the exception to any blanket verdict: Kindle-compatible public-library ebooks are officially a U.S.-only OverDrive offering, while Kobo’s support extends to more countries but still depends on the participating library and the individual title.

Buying ebooks: which store is easier?
Kindle is optimized for Amazon purchases
Amazon’s Kindle help says, “Use the Kindle or the Audible Store to purchase books from your device.” A Kindle book bought through Amazon is delivered to the registered device over an internet connection and remains associated with the Amazon account that purchased it. That creates a smooth one-store experience: search, buy, download, and continue reading without moving files manually.
#1 Best Overall
- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
The same integration is useful when you read on more than one Kindle app or device. Your purchases are managed through the Amazon account rather than as ordinary files in a folder. This convenience is also the main trade-off: books bought for Kindle are designed for the Kindle ecosystem, not for unrestricted transfer to another reader.
Kobo supports purchases on the reader and outside it
Kobo’s official e-reader documentation says you can buy from the Kobo Store on the device, on kobo.com, or in the Android app. Purchased books sync to Kobo hardware associated with the same account. For a reader who wants a conventional store-and-sync experience, this is comparable to Kindle.
Kobo becomes more distinctive when you bring in books from elsewhere. Its documentation lists broad native support for EPUB and EPUB3, as well as comic, image, text, and document formats. A compatible book without incompatible digital-rights management can usually be copied by USB; selected devices and account setups also support Dropbox or Google Drive workflows. That makes Kobo a better fit for DRM-free purchases, public-domain collections, and books supplied by independent publishers.
What “EPUB support” means on each platform
Kobo reads EPUB files directly, so an ordinary, compatible EPUB can be transferred without conversion. Kindle’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB along with PDF, DOC/DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML, and common image files. Amazon converts the file for delivery to your Kindle library or registered devices. This is useful for personal documents and non-Amazon purchases, but it does not turn Kindle into an open file system: books bought from Amazon continue to be controlled through the Kindle account and its publishing rights.
Digital rights management remains a separate issue. A file can have a supported extension and still fail to open if it uses DRM that the device cannot authorize. Before assuming that any EPUB will work, check whether it is DRM-free or specifically licensed for your reader.

How to put your own books on each reader
Send a file to Kindle
- Confirm that the file is one of Amazon’s supported Send to Kindle types: EPUB, PDF, DOC/DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML, or a common image file.
- Use Amazon’s Send to Kindle workflow with the Amazon account registered to your device. The service processes the file and delivers it over an internet connection.
- Open the Kindle library and sync. The document should appear alongside your other Kindle content when processing is complete.
- If it does not appear, check that the device is online, that you used the correct Amazon account, and that the file is not protected by unsupported DRM.
Transfer a file to Kobo
- Check that the book is in a Kobo-supported format such as EPUB, EPUB3, FlePub, PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, or CBR, and confirm that its DRM is compatible.
- Connect the Kobo to a computer with a USB cable and approve the connection on the reader.
- Copy the file to the reader’s storage, then safely eject the device. Kobo indexes the title when you return to the library.
- If your model and account support it, use the documented Dropbox or Google Drive option instead of USB. Availability of those cloud workflows varies by device and software.
USB is the more predictable choice when a cloud option is missing or a workplace network blocks a service. Keep an original copy of every sideloaded book on your computer; deleting a local copy is not a reliable way to recover a title later.
Borrowing library ebooks: Kindle versus Kobo
Kindle’s U.S.-only OverDrive arrangement
OverDrive states: “OverDrive is the exclusive provider of Kindle-compatible ebooks to public libraries in the U.S.” In practice, a U.S. borrower normally finds a title in Libby or on the library’s website, checks it out with a library card, selects Read now with Kindle, and completes the handoff to Amazon. The book is then delivered to the selected Kindle over an internet connection.

This is a polished workflow when all three conditions are met: you are using a U.S. public library, that library offers the title in the Kindle-compatible format, and the title’s lending rights allow the handoff. It should not be read as worldwide Kindle library support. A library using Libby in another country may offer EPUB or another format without offering a Kindle delivery option.
Kobo’s built-in OverDrive controls
Rakuten Kobo says most Kobo e-readers have OverDrive built in, allowing borrowing on the device without a phone or computer when the service is supported. Kobo’s help guidance identifies the practical requirements: a participating library, a valid library card, and an internet connection so the reader can authenticate and sync the loan.
On a compatible device, you can generally open the OverDrive or library area, find your library, sign in with your card details, search the catalog, and borrow an available title. The Kobo then synchronizes the loan. If a particular Kobo model lacks the built-in option, Kobo documents a computer-based route using Adobe Digital Editions.

Why Kobo is not compatible with every Libby loan
Libby’s own help documentation warns: “Not all ebooks in Libby are compatible with Kobo, so some ebook loans won’t sync onto your Kobo.” A library can therefore be supported in general while a specific title fails to transfer. Compatibility can vary with the title’s publisher permissions, file type, and lending technology.
That caveat prevents a common mistake: treating “my library uses Libby” as proof that every Libby book will work on a Kobo. The same check is necessary for Kindle, where the U.S. Kindle handoff exists only for eligible titles.
Library borrowing checklist before you buy
- Identify the exact library system or systems you use, not just the country.
- Ask whether the library supports OverDrive borrowing on your intended device, and whether it offers Kindle delivery, Kobo’s built-in option, or only phone/computer reading.
- Search for several books you actually borrow. A platform can support the library while an individual title remains incompatible.
- Check your country’s support. Kindle-compatible public-library ebooks through OverDrive are officially a U.S. offering; Kobo support is geographically broader but not universal.
- Confirm that the intended Kobo model includes OverDrive if device-side borrowing is important. “Most” does not mean every model.
- Keep Adobe Digital Editions in mind as a fallback for a Kobo without built-in OverDrive, provided the library’s files and DRM are compatible.
Subscriptions: Kindle Unlimited and Kobo Plus
Kindle Unlimited
Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s monthly subscription for access to a changing selection of Kindle ebooks. It is most valuable when the books you want are included and you already read inside the Kindle ecosystem. A subscription does not make every Kindle Store purchase free, and it does not provide a universal pass to all Amazon ebooks.
Kobo Plus
Kobo Plus has separate ebook-only, audiobook-only, and combined plans in the United States, while the service itself is available only in selected countries. Kobo advertises access to more than 1.5 million ebooks and more than 150,000 audiobooks; those are Kobo’s marketing figures for its subscription service, accessed in 2026, not a like-for-like comparison with the entire Kindle Store.
Prices, eligible countries, and catalog composition change. Check the current Kobo Plus and Kindle Unlimited terms for your country before treating either subscription as a reason to choose a device. Compare the authors and series you actually read, because a larger headline number does not guarantee that a particular backlist or new release is included.

Do the subscriptions work across ecosystems?
No. Kindle Unlimited titles belong to Amazon’s Kindle service, while Kobo Plus titles belong to Kobo’s service. A Kobo reader cannot use a Kindle Unlimited membership, and a Kindle cannot use Kobo Plus. Subscriptions also do not remove DRM or make borrowed library books transferable between platforms.
Which platform fits common reading patterns?
| If this describes you | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You buy nearly every ebook from Amazon | Kindle | Purchasing, delivery, account management, and reading are integrated. |
| You use Kindle Unlimited regularly | Kindle | The subscription is built for Kindle devices and apps. |
| You live in the U.S. and borrow Kindle-eligible books from a public library | Kindle | The Libby or library-site “Read now with Kindle” handoff is established for eligible loans. |
| You borrow through a supported OverDrive library outside the U.S. | Kobo | Kobo’s library support is geographically broader, subject to local and title compatibility. |
| You keep DRM-free EPUBs from several sources | Kobo | EPUB is native, and USB/cloud sideloading is more direct. |
| You want to read comics or varied document formats | Kobo | Its documented native list includes CBZ, CBR, PDF, image, text, and multiple ebook formats. |
| You split your time between purchases and loans | Depends on library and country | Check your library’s exact titles first; the store preference alone cannot settle compatibility. |
Device availability and model selection
The ecosystem decision is only useful if the exact reader you want is sold and supported in your market. Product names, stock, firmware features, and regional storefronts can differ by country. Before ordering, confirm that the model is officially available where you live, that its software offers the borrowing feature you need, and that the account store is set to your country.
For Kobo, verify OverDrive on the specific model rather than assuming every Kobo reader includes it. For Kindle, verify that your Amazon marketplace and local library support the Kindle delivery route. A gray-market device may be physically usable but leave you without the regional account, warranty, or library features you expected.
Common failure points and fixes
“My library uses Libby, but the book will not appear on Kobo.”
Libby explicitly notes that some loans are not Kobo-compatible. Search the same title in the Kobo’s library interface, check the loan’s available format, and ask the library whether that edition can be delivered to Kobo. If the device lacks built-in OverDrive, use the documented Adobe Digital Editions computer workflow when the loan permits it.

The Kindle handoff is tied to eligible U.S. public-library loans. Confirm that your library is in the United States, that the title offers Read now with Kindle, and that you are signed into the Amazon account registered to the device. If the option is absent, the title or library may not have Kindle-compatible rights.

“The EPUB is supported, but it will not open.”
Check DRM first. Kobo’s format list and Kindle’s Send to Kindle list describe file containers, not permission to bypass an incompatible license. Re-download the file from the legitimate seller, verify the extension, and follow that seller’s authorized reading method if the book is protected.
“The book was delivered, but it is not visible.”
Connect the reader to the internet and run a manual sync. On Kindle, confirm the document was sent to the correct Amazon account and registered device. On Kobo, safely eject after USB transfer and allow the library to re-index. A title can also be hidden by a filter or remain pending while a service processes it.
“A subscription catalog does not contain the book I expected.”
Search the subscription catalog separately from the store. Kindle Unlimited and Kobo Plus are curated, changing catalogs; neither includes every title sold by its own storefront. Country eligibility and publisher participation can change without changing the device hardware.
A practical decision process
- List the books you bought in the last year and mark where each came from: Amazon, Kobo, another store, a publisher, or a library.
- List the library systems you use and check five frequently borrowed titles for device compatibility.
- Decide whether native EPUB and computer/cloud sideloading are essential or merely convenient.
- Compare the current Kindle Unlimited or Kobo Plus catalog with your actual authors and series, not headline catalog totals.
- Verify the exact device model’s availability and borrowing features in your country.
- Choose the ecosystem that satisfies your non-negotiable requirement. A slightly less convenient store is usually easier to tolerate than a reader that cannot open your regular library loans.
Verdict
Kindle is the better buy for an Amazon-centered reader: frequent Amazon purchases, Kindle Unlimited, and eligible U.S. public-library loans all work within one account and delivery system. Kobo is the better buy for an open-file and library-centered reader: native EPUB, broad sideloading options, and OverDrive on most models provide more flexibility, especially outside the United States.
If you buy some books and borrow others, do not decide from the store catalog alone. Test your library first, including the specific titles you borrow most. That check determines whether the convenience you expect—direct Kobo borrowing or the Kindle handoff—will actually work where you live.
