Kindle vs. Kobo: Which E‑Reader Is Better for Borrowing and Buying Books?

Short answer: Kobo is usually the better fit if your priority is borrowing library ebooks directly on an e-reader through Libby/OverDrive, provided your library and the titles you want are supported. Kindle is the better fit for a U.S. reader whose library offers Kindle-format loans and who primarily buys books in the Kindle store. Neither is a universal winner: verify your library, country and specific titles before purchasing.

The decision is about library compatibility, not just hardware

Kindle and Kobo both read purchased ebooks, but their library-borrowing routes are different. Your local library controls which service it uses, which titles it licenses, how many copies it owns and whether a Kindle-compatible or Kobo-compatible edition is offered. A book being sold in an ebook store does not guarantee that the same title can be borrowed on your device.

  • Does your library participate in Libby or OverDrive?
  • Is the service available in your country?
  • Are the particular books you borrow offered in a format your chosen reader can receive?
  • Do you want to complete borrowing on the e-reader, or are you comfortable using a phone or computer?

Answer those questions before comparing screen size, storage or battery claims. Current model prices and hardware specifications are not established by the library documentation considered here, so they should be compared separately for the exact models you are considering.

Kindle versus Kobo for library borrowing

Decision point Kindle Kobo What to verify
Geographic coverage OverDrive states that Kindle Books are available for U.S. libraries only. See OverDrive’s e-reader help. Kobo lists Libby availability in multiple countries, but a participating local library is still required. See Kobo’s country list. Check both your country and your library system.
How a loan reaches the device Borrow an eligible title in Libby or on the library’s OverDrive site, then send it to Kindle. Borrow in Libby, on the library website or through a supported Kobo’s OverDrive feature, then sync the reader. Try several books you actually want to read.
Catalog coverage Only titles with an eligible Kindle edition can be sent to Kindle. Kobo warns that some library titles are unavailable through Kobo and some Kobo titles are unavailable from a library. Availability must be checked title by title.
Direct borrowing on the reader OverDrive describes choosing and sending a loan through Libby or the library site. Supported models can link a library card and browse, borrow, place holds and sync loans on the device. Use the workflow on your own library account before buying.
Buying books Best suited to readers whose purchases center on the Kindle ecosystem. A current store-size or price comparison is not established here. Best suited to readers buying through Kobo. Purchased and borrowed Kobo titles can appear together, while loans remain temporary. Compare prices and availability for the authors and formats you buy most.
Audiobooks Not assessed in detail for Kindle e-readers in the available documentation. Libby audiobook loans cannot be played on Kobo e-readers; some content is available only in the Libby app. Confirm the app and device route if audiobooks matter.
Price, screen and battery Not established in the library-focused evidence. Not established in the library-focused evidence. Compare current, model-specific specifications separately.

How borrowing works on Kindle

The key limitation is regional and format-based rather than a general inability to read borrowed ebooks. OverDrive’s documentation says, “Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only.” A U.S. library user still needs a title that the library licenses in a Kindle-compatible edition.

  1. Open your library’s Libby account or OverDrive website. Search while signed in to the library card you intend to use.
  2. Find a title and check its formats. The listing must offer a Kindle option; a standard ebook listing without that option cannot be sent as a Kindle loan.
  3. Borrow the book and select the Kindle delivery option. The handoff takes place through Libby or the library’s OverDrive site, not through a universal on-device Kindle catalog.
  4. Complete the delivery and sync the Kindle. Once the loan is delivered, connect the reader to Wi-Fi and sync so the title downloads.
  5. Read until the library due date. The loan follows the library’s lending period and eligibility rules. When the term ends, access is removed according to the lending system.

If the Kindle option is missing, that is normally a catalog or licensing issue, not a setting you can fix on the reader. Try another edition, another title or the library’s app, and ask the library whether a Kindle edition is licensed.

OverDrive’s Kindle resource page explains the Libby-to-Kindle route, while its e-reader help page documents the U.S.-only availability note.

How borrowing works on Kobo

Supported Kobo e-readers can integrate with OverDrive so you can connect a library card, browse the library collection, borrow books, place holds and synchronize loans. The exact menu wording can vary by model and software version, so follow the OverDrive or library section shown on your device rather than an old screenshot.

  1. Confirm that your country and library are supported. Kobo’s Libby country page currently lists Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
  2. Connect the Kobo to Wi-Fi and open its library/OverDrive feature. Supported devices require a library card and an internet connection for setup and synchronization.
  3. Link the library card. Search for your library, enter the requested card credentials and authorize the connection.
  4. Search, borrow or place a hold. The device displays only titles made available through that library’s Kobo-compatible integration. A title you can see in another store or app may not appear here.
  5. Sync the reader. The borrowed book downloads to the device. Holds become available only when the library releases a copy.
  6. Read during the loan period. Kobo says borrowed titles expire automatically when the library’s lending period ends.

Kobo’s help page states, “Some Kobo titles may not be available from your library, and some library titles may not be available from Kobo.” Treat that as a catalog rule, not an occasional software glitch. Details are in Kobo’s borrowing instructions.

Why a library loan may be unavailable

Library lending is governed by licenses rather than an unlimited digital shelf. A library may own a limited number of simultaneous copies, impose a loan period and require a hold queue for popular books. Kobo explains that some content is not offered through its device integration, and a library may license a title only in a format that your reader cannot use.

  • No Kindle button: the library may not have a Kindle edition for that title, or Kindle delivery may not be supported in your region.
  • No Kobo result: the title may be licensed to the library but not exposed through Kobo’s integration.
  • Hold required: all licensed copies are currently checked out.
  • Different result in Libby: the app can offer formats or content that an e-reader integration cannot display.
  • Loan disappears: the due date has passed; a library loan is not a permanent purchase.

When a decisive book is missing, search the library catalog in Libby, on its website and on the device. Those results can differ because each route supports different formats.

Buying books is a separate decision

A store purchase and a library loan have different rights and lifetimes. Kobo states that purchased Kobo books remain in the Kobo account unless they are removed, whereas borrowed books have due dates and are automatically returned at the end of the lending period. A paid store copy can therefore be available immediately even while the library’s licensed copies are all on hold.

  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

For Kindle, the relevant buying question is whether your normal purchases are centered on the Kindle ecosystem. The available evidence does not establish current store size, average prices or a universal price advantage for either platform. Compare the exact editions you buy, because an ebook’s price and availability can vary by publisher, territory and format.

Keep the two checks separate:

  • Borrowing check: search your library for the titles you expect to borrow and confirm the delivery format.
  • Buying check: compare the same authors and editions in the store you plan to use.
  • Ownership check: remember that a purchased title is retained in the account, while a loan is temporary and controlled by the library.

Desktop transfer when direct borrowing is not available

Direct on-device borrowing is convenient, but it is not the only route. OverDrive documents a transfer method using Adobe Digital Editions on Windows or Mac for compatible borrowed ebooks and compatible e-readers. This can help when a supported Kobo model is unavailable, when a library requires a computer-based workflow or when the device’s built-in integration does not expose a title.

  1. Borrow a compatible ebook through Libby or the library’s OverDrive website.
  2. Download the loan file or authorization requested by the lending service.
  3. Open it in Adobe Digital Editions on a Windows or Mac computer.
  4. Authorize the computer if the service requests authorization.
  5. Connect the compatible e-reader and use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the book.
  6. Eject the reader safely and open the transferred title.

The transfer path depends on the ebook’s protection and the reader’s compatibility. OverDrive’s getting-started guide explains the supported workflow; it is not a guarantee that every title or every device can use it.

Which reader fits each type of reader?

Choose Kobo when library borrowing is the priority

  • Your local library participates in Libby/OverDrive and is in one of Kobo’s listed countries.
  • You want to browse, borrow and place holds from the e-reader instead of relying on a phone or computer.
  • The books you borrow appear in your library’s Kobo-compatible catalog.
  • You accept that some titles may be unavailable, have holds or expire automatically.

This is a “likely better fit,” not a promise of universal access. Confirm several representative titles first.

  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Choose Kindle when U.S. Kindle loans and purchases align

  • You are using a U.S. library whose catalog offers Kindle-format loans.
  • Your most important books are available with the Kindle delivery option.
  • You primarily buy ebooks through the Kindle ecosystem.
  • You are comfortable selecting loans in Libby or on the library website and then sending them to the reader.

Kindle’s library route should be treated as a U.S.-library service constraint. Being able to read Kindle purchases does not mean that every international library loan can be delivered to a Kindle.

Pause before buying either one

  • Your library uses a different lending service or does not participate in the relevant integration.
  • You live outside the countries currently listed by Kobo for Libby and library borrowing is essential.
  • One or two specific books determine the purchase.
  • Audiobooks are central to your use and you have not confirmed the playback app. Kobo specifically says Libby audiobook loans cannot be played on Kobo e-readers.

In these cases, test the library catalog and delivery route first. A short catalog check is more reliable than choosing from a brand reputation or a generic compatibility list.

A pre-purchase verification checklist

  1. Write down five books you genuinely expect to borrow. Include at least one popular title and one backlist title.
  2. Search each book in your library’s Libby app or OverDrive website. Record whether it is available now, requires a hold and which formats are offered.
  3. For Kindle, confirm the Kindle delivery option. If it is absent, do not assume the device will receive the loan.
  4. For Kobo, test the same titles through the Kobo borrowing flow if possible. A result in Libby alone does not establish Kobo availability.
  5. Check your country against Kobo’s current list. Country support and local-library participation are separate requirements.
  6. Decide how much computer or phone use you will tolerate. Kindle selection is described through Libby or the library site; supported Kobo models can perform more of the process on the reader.
  7. Check audiobook needs separately. Do not infer audiobook support from ebook support.
  8. Only then compare the exact models for price, screen, storage, lighting, waterproofing, accessibility and battery. Those specifications vary by model and are outside the library-compatibility evidence here.

Common problems and practical fixes

The book appears in the library app but not on the e-reader

Check the format and the device-specific catalog. For Kindle, look for the Kindle delivery option. For Kobo, search from the supported device’s library feature and verify that the title is offered through Kobo. If the title is licensed only for another format, the reader cannot convert that loan into a supported one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The library card will not link

Confirm that the card belongs to the library system you selected, that the card is active and that the reader is online. If the service itself is unavailable in your country, changing device settings will not resolve it; use the library’s supported app or ask the library which e-reader formats it supports.

A borrowed book is missing after checkout

Sync over Wi-Fi and check the loan status in the library service. A hold may not have matured, or the download may require the desktop transfer method described by OverDrive. Do not buy a second copy until you know whether the loan is pending, incompatible or simply unsynchronized.

The book vanished while you were reading

Library loans are time-limited. Kobo says its borrowed titles expire automatically at the end of the lending period. If you still need the book, renew it when the library permits or place another hold; a store purchase is a separate transaction.

Verdict

For a reader choosing primarily on library access, Kobo is generally the stronger starting point when a supported local Libby/OverDrive library offers the desired books and direct on-device borrowing matters. Kindle is the more logical choice for a U.S. reader whose library supplies Kindle-format loans and whose purchases are concentrated in the Kindle ecosystem. If your country, library or must-read titles do not fit those conditions, postpone the hardware decision and verify the catalog first. The evidence supports a reader-specific choice, not a universal winner on price, screen or battery life.
