To change how a Kindle book looks, open the book, tap the top of the screen, and select the Aa icon. On a Kindle e-reader, the panel separates controls into Themes, Font, Layout, and More. Themes save a combination of display choices; Layout changes margins, spacing, orientation, and alignment; Font changes typeface, size, and sometimes boldness.
The exact controls depend on your Kindle model, app platform, book format, and the book’s embedded formatting. A setting that works in a reflowable novel may be unavailable in a fixed-layout comic, cookbook, magazine, or illustrated book.

Open Kindle’s reading settings
On a Kindle e-reader
- Open the book you want to read.
- Tap near the top of the page to reveal the reading toolbar.
- Tap the Aa (Page Display) icon.
- Choose Themes, Font, Layout, or More.
- Change an option and return to the page to see the result. Kindle normally applies the choice immediately.
Amazon says its general e-reader instructions cover Kindle devices from the sixth generation onward, but it also warns that available settings vary by model. A current device can therefore show different labels or fewer choices than another Kindle. If you do not see a control described here, first check that you opened a book and tapped the page-display icon rather than the Home-screen settings.
In Kindle apps
Kindle apps expose many of the same visual adjustments, but the menu is platform-specific. Amazon documents page color, margins, alignment, continuous scrolling, and themes for particular app versions; Kindle for Web, Kindle for PC, and Kindle for macOS do not necessarily present the same subset. Look for the reading toolbar and an Aa, text, or display button, then use the options shown by that app. Do not expect every e-reader tab or control to appear on a phone, tablet, computer, or browser.

The four groups of controls
Themes: save a complete reading look
A theme is a saved combination of reading preferences, not a promise that every Kindle has the same color palette or typography. On supported e-readers, the Themes tab can change the page background color, select a preferred preset, and save the current Font, Layout, and More choices as a named look. This is useful when you switch between a daytime setup, a low-light setup, and a large-print setup.
To create a consistent arrangement, set the font, size, margins, spacing, orientation, alignment, and any other available options first. Open Aa > Themes, choose the command to save or create a theme, name it, and select it later from the same tab. The wording and number of preset themes differ by model and software.
Amazon’s app documentation also describes preset and custom themes, with page-color choices that depend on the platform. A theme saved on one app or device should not be treated as a universal profile with identical controls everywhere.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Font: choose typeface, size, and weight
The Font tab lists the typefaces available on your device and for the current book, along with text size. Amazon also documents a bold adjustment on supported versions. Some books include a publisher-embedded font; when that happens, the font may appear as an additional choice or the book may give you less control over typeface selection.
Increase size until you can read without leaning toward the screen, then adjust margins and line spacing so the enlarged text does not feel cramped. A larger size creates more screen turns and can alter where chapters, illustrations, and footnotes appear. That is normal reflow, not missing text.
Rank #2
- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
If the typeface selector is present but one choice does not change the page, the book may be supplying its own font or applying formatting that overrides reader preferences. Test a standard reflowable book before assuming the Kindle is malfunctioning.
Layout: control the text block
Layout controls the geometry of a reflowable page. Depending on your model or app, you can adjust:
- Margins: the horizontal space between the text block and the screen edges.
- Line spacing: the vertical gap between lines.
- Paragraph spacing: the gap between paragraphs.
- Word spacing: the amount of space between words.
- Character spacing: the amount of space between letters.
- Orientation: portrait or landscape, where the device or app supports rotation.
- Alignment: justified text with even-looking edges, or left alignment with a ragged right edge.
Margins do not change the font size. They change how much horizontal space the text column occupies. Narrower margins fit more characters per line; wider margins shorten lines and can make a large font easier to scan. Line, word, and character spacing change the gaps inside that column.
Justified text can produce visibly large spaces, especially at a large font size or on short lines. Left alignment avoids stretched word gaps but leaves an uneven right edge. Try both with the same page of prose rather than judging from a chapter heading or a page containing a list.
More: progress and clock options
The More tab includes reading-progress tracking and an option to display the clock on supported e-readers. Progress indicators can show location, page, or time remaining depending on the book and the selected display. A digital page number is not available for every Kindle title because page numbering depends on the print edition or book structure.

How to choose comfortable margins and spacing
Start with a readable baseline
- Set a font size that you can read at your normal holding distance.
- Choose a familiar typeface with distinct letter shapes.
- Use the middle margin setting as a neutral starting point.
- Set line spacing to the middle option, then read a full page of ordinary paragraphs.
- Change one control at a time so you can tell what improved or worsened the page.
For dense novels, slightly wider line spacing can make it easier to keep your place. For reference material, a little more paragraph spacing can separate ideas. Very narrow margins may maximize words per page but create long lines that are harder to track, particularly at small type sizes. Very wide margins reduce line length and increase page turns without automatically improving comprehension.

- Low light: use a darker page color if your model or app offers it, then keep enough contrast for punctuation and thin letter strokes.
- Large text: expect more page turns; compensate with moderate margins and line spacing rather than making every spacing control maximal.
- Language learning: a larger font and looser line spacing can make accents and unfamiliar words easier to distinguish.
- Long-form fiction: left alignment may look less uniform than justification but avoids stretched gaps on short lines.
- Landscape reading: use it when a wider line or a two-column illustration benefits from extra horizontal space; return to portrait when lines become tiring to track.
Enhanced Typesetting and automatic layout changes
Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting technology can adapt some layouts automatically. Amazon says it is designed to reduce large gaps between words or squeezed text when font sizes are large or line lengths are short. As a result, two pages with the same selected font and margin values may not have identical spacing in every book.
Enhanced Typesetting does not mean that every title supports every control. It is a rendering system applied to eligible content, while the publisher’s file still determines whether the book is reflowable, how paragraphs are marked, and whether styles are forced. Treat the visible result as the interaction between your preferences, the book’s structure, and Kindle’s typesetting engine.
Why a Kindle setting may not work
The book uses fixed layout
Fixed-layout content positions text and images on a designed page instead of allowing the page to reflow freely. Amazon states that fixed-layout content does not allow font-size changes. Illustrated books, comics, children’s picture books, magazines, and some technical titles commonly use this approach, although the format is determined by the individual title.
In a fixed-layout book, a disabled font control or an unchanged page after selecting a new size is expected behavior. You may still have access to limited page-color, orientation, or navigation options, but do not assume that margins and line spacing can be rebuilt like a novel.

The publisher has forced styles
Amazon’s publishing guidance warns that forced styles on normal text can override reader preferences. A book can therefore expose the Aa panel while ignoring a font, margin, or spacing change for particular passages. Headings, quotations, tables, footnotes, and embedded text may follow their own rules even when the main paragraphs respond normally.
The control belongs to another platform
An e-reader may show a Themes or Layout tab that is absent from the mobile or desktop app you are using. Conversely, an app may offer continuous scrolling or a page-color option that is not presented with the same label on an e-reader. Confirm the platform before troubleshooting the book.
The book is using special content
Tables, maps, scanned pages, complex formulas, and image-based text have different display requirements from ordinary prose. A margin change can affect surrounding paragraphs while leaving an image or table unchanged. This is a content limitation, not evidence that the entire display menu failed.
Platform and content differences at a glance
| Where you read | Controls Amazon documents | What can limit the result |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-reader | Themes, font, bold adjustment, margins, line/paragraph/word/character spacing, orientation, alignment, progress, and clock, depending on model | Model generation, software version, book format, and publisher formatting |
| Kindle mobile or tablet app | Platform-specific combinations of page color, margins, alignment, continuous scrolling, and themes | App version, operating system, and title structure |
| Kindle for Web | A subset of reading-display controls documented for the web version | Browser implementation and the book’s available layout |
| Kindle for PC or macOS | A platform-specific subset of display options | Desktop app version and book format |
| Fixed-layout title on any platform | Only the controls that the title and app expose | Positioned pages can prevent font resizing and reflow |
This is a capability guide, not a model-by-model compatibility chart. Amazon’s general help does not map every Themes and Layout choice to every current Kindle model, so verify the exact device or app when a particular control is essential.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Reopen the display panel: tap the page, reveal the toolbar, and confirm you are changing the Aa settings for the open book.
- Test a normal prose title: use a reflowable novel or other text-heavy book. If the control works there, the original title is probably imposing a format or style limitation.
- Check whether the book is fixed layout: a disabled font-size control or pages that behave like images are strong signs that reflow is unavailable.
- Change one setting: test font, then margins, then spacing. This isolates a publisher style that overrides only one category.
- Try the same title on another supported platform: the app may expose a different subset of controls, but a difference between platforms does not prove that either one is defective.
- Restore a simple setup: select a standard font, middle margin, and middle line spacing, then create a new theme only after the page responds as expected.
Do not delete a book or reset a Kindle merely because one title will not accept a layout change. Format and embedded-style restrictions are the documented explanations to rule out first.

Do settings apply to every book?
Amazon’s Kindle e-reader help says, “Your preferences apply to all the books that you read on your Kindle.” That statement describes the device’s saved preferences, while the same help documentation qualifies that controls vary by model. A book can also constrain or override those preferences through fixed layout or forced styles. In practice, a saved theme or layout is your default preference for eligible content, not a guarantee that every page will render identically.
When you move between a dedicated Kindle and an app, check the local display menu. Settings are not a single universal control panel shared perfectly across every device, app, and title.
Do you need a newer Kindle to change these settings?
No upgrade is required simply to adjust reading preferences. Amazon documents display controls on Kindle apps as well as e-readers. A newer or different e-reader may expose a different set of options, but the decision should be based on the controls you actually need, not on the assumption that every model supports every theme or layout feature.
Before replacing a device, open the Aa menu on your current Kindle, test a reflowable book, and compare the available controls with your reading needs. If the only problem occurs in one fixed-layout or heavily styled title, new hardware may not change the result.
