For mostly text-based Kindle books, the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite’s 16 GB should be enough for most readers who download titles as needed and remove finished downloads. Amazon says about 11.5 GB is available for user content. If you want to keep several Audible audiobooks or other large files on the device for offline use, the 32 GB Signature Edition—with about 25 GB available—gives you more room.
How much storage is available on each Kindle Paperwhite?
The capacity printed on the box is not all available for books and other personal content. Amazon’s US-facing specifications distinguish internal capacity from user-available space:

These figures are for the models and market covered by Amazon’s listing; configurations can vary by region. The 2024 standard model has more user-available space than the 2021 standard model, while the 2021 Signature Edition listing reports slightly more available space than the 2024 Signature Edition listing. Is 16 GB enough for Kindle books?
For an ebook-first reader, usually. Text books generally take less space than audiobooks, comics, and image-heavy titles, so 11.5 GB of user-available storage is a practical amount if you are willing to download books when you want them and remove completed downloads afterward.

There is no reliable universal number of Kindle books that fit in a gigabyte. Book files vary, and Amazon’s published specifications do not provide a representative per-title size or a defensible total book count. The number of titles in your Amazon library is also different from the number stored locally: cloud-backed purchases can remain in your account without occupying device storage.
How much space do Audible audiobooks use?
Audible downloads can take substantially more room than ordinary text ebooks, but Amazon’s official materials cited here do not establish a typical audiobook file size or a universal audiobook count per gigabyte. Choose based on how many large downloads you want available offline at once rather than on a promised number of hours or titles.

The 12th-generation Paperwhite guide documents downloading Audible books from the library. When an Audible audiobook is paired with its Kindle ebook, they can appear together in the library, but the audio still needs to be downloaded. Listening requires a paired Bluetooth audio device—such as headphones, speakers, or earbuds—not the Kindle’s storage alone. Audible support lists the Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation and later among compatible devices, but Audible availability and features vary by country. Which capacity should you choose?
- Choose the 16 GB 2024 Paperwhite if you mainly read text ebooks, are comfortable downloading them when needed, and do not need a large offline collection of audio or image-heavy files.
- Consider the 32 GB 2024 Signature Edition if you want more headroom for multiple audiobooks, comics, or other large files stored on the device at the same time.
- Do not choose by cloud-library size alone. Owning many Kindle books does not mean you must keep every title downloaded locally.

How to check and free storage on a Paperwhite
Check available space
- Open Quick Actions.
- Choose All Settings.
- Open the Menu.
- Select Device Info to view device information, including storage details described in Amazon’s guide.
Remove downloads without losing cloud purchases
Amazon’s Storage management options let you remove books, audiobooks, documents, samples, periodicals, and other items from the device. Removing a Kindle or Audible Store download is different from permanently deleting the title from your account: purchased content stored in Amazon Cloud can be downloaded again later. Files transferred over USB are not stored in that cloud library, and Amazon warns that removing them permanently deletes them from the device. Amazon’s Kindle storage-management guidance

Embedded audio or video in a Kindle ebook is not the same as an Audible audiobook download. Kindle Direct Publishing says embedded audio and video are unsupported on Kindle e-reader devices, so do not count on a Paperwhite to play those embedded media files.
