The Kilcoole Little Tern colony in County Wicklow, Ireland, had an exceptionally poor 2025 breeding season. The National Parks and Wildlife Service Ireland says the colony recorded its lowest estimated productivity in more than a decade and its fewest breeding pairs since 2014. The report describes the season as “very poor from start to finish,” but does not establish one confirmed cause.
What happened at Kilcoole in 2025?
Little Tern numbers at Kilcoole stayed low throughout the season. Birds were absent more often and for longer periods than expected, and observers saw little offshore fishing activity. The colony also appeared unusually quiet compared with the previous year, when conditions had been exceptionally strong.

The 2025 results are especially notable because Kilcoole has historically been one of Ireland’s important Little Tern breeding sites. Its estimated productivity was the lowest recorded in over a decade, while the number of breeding pairs fell to its lowest level since 2014. The available report does not give a single numerical total for either measure in the summary of results, so those figures should not be inferred beyond the stated historical comparisons.
How different was 2025 from the record 2024 season?
The contrast with 2024 was sharp. In that record-breaking season, the first egg was laid on 9 May, more than 100 nests were present by 15 May, and many adults were seen returning with sandeels. Numerous nests held the maximum three-egg clutch, all signs that birds had arrived, settled and found favourable feeding conditions.

In 2025, the colony did not show the same sustained attendance or feeding activity. That year-to-year difference demonstrates how quickly breeding outcomes can change at a coastal colony, even one with a strong long-term record.
Why was the colony so poor?
The official 2025 account does not prove that food shortage, predation, weather or disturbance alone caused the decline. It records observations that may help explain the outcome, but they remain hypotheses:

- Low attendance: birds were missing from the colony frequently and for prolonged periods.
- Little observed fishing: observers saw limited offshore fishing, which could indicate that suitable prey was harder to find or that birds were foraging elsewhere. The report does not measure prey abundance or establish that a food shortage caused the breeding failure.
- Possible movement to other sites: unusually high numbers of Little Terns were seen at smaller sites along Ireland’s east coast. Some prospecting pairs may have bypassed Kilcoole, although the report cannot confirm that every missing pair relocated.
- No unusual early predator presence: the report did not identify abnormally high predator numbers at the start of the season.
- No exceptional disturbance recorded: beach disturbance was within normal expectations rather than an identified 2025 spike.
Because several explanations remain possible, it would be misleading to label the event a proven food-driven collapse. Longer-term monitoring of attendance, prey, weather, flooding, predators and neighbouring colonies is needed to separate those factors.

Little Terns face several pressures across Britain and Ireland. The 2024 UK monitoring report recorded 1,403 breeding abundance units and an average of 0.25 chicks fledged per pair. Its comparison of the Seabird 2000 and Seabirds Count censuses found a 15% decline across Britain and Ireland.

- EASY AND PRECISE FOCUSING - These binoculars are designed for effortless operation: simply adjust the barrels to align with your eyes, then rotate the sensitive, non-slip center focus wheel with one finger to achieve a sharp, single image without double vision. The focus wheel is covered with soft rubber for comfortable, long-term use without finger fatigue.
- RUGGED AND WATERPROOF CONSTRUCTION - The binoculars feature a daily waterproof body with a rubber coating that provides impact resistance and a firm, comfortable grip. Built with high-quality materials, they are suitable for various outdoor conditions, including harsh environments (note: please do not immerse the binoculars in water). The unique non-slip ergonomic handles on both sides are made of eco-friendly rubber with a textured surface, ensuring a secure and comfortable hold that prevents slipping.
Recognised pressures include human disturbance on nesting beaches, loss of open nesting habitat, extreme weather, predation, coastal erosion and vegetation encroachment. These pressures can interact: a storm or high tide can remove nests, while disturbance may prevent adults from returning quickly enough to defend or feed a colony.
Were all colonies unsuccessful in 2025?
No. Results varied considerably by location. RSPB reported 455 Little Terns fledging at Eccles in Norfolk. At Beacon Lagoons on the Humber, it recorded 105 breeding pairs and 110 fledglings. Pagham Harbour produced 21 fledglings. RSPB also reported that English Little Tern numbers were up 6.7% since 2019.

- 10x magnification & 42mm objective lenses, these Crossfire HD binos are optimized with select glass elements to deliver exceptional resolution, cut chromatic aberration and provide outstanding color fidelity, edge-to-edge sharpness and light transmission.
- Fully multi-coated lenses increase light transmission with multiple anti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces. Roof prism design is valued for greater durability and a more compact size.
- Adjustable eyecups twist up and down for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses. Center focus wheel adjusts the focus of both binocular barrels at the same time. Diopter (located on right eyepiece) adjusts for differences in a user's eyes.
- Rubber armor provides a secure, non-slip grip, and durable external protection. Binoculars are tripod adaptable allowing use on a tripod or car window mount.
- Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals provide water and fogproof performance in all environments. Rugged construction withstands recoil and impact.
Those figures do not cancel out Kilcoole’s poor season, because colonies differ in habitat, weather, food access, predator pressure and protection. They do show that a bad result at one site should not be treated as evidence that every colony had the same outcome.
How are conservation teams protecting Little Terns?
Common measures include wardening during the nesting season, signs and temporary barriers to keep people and dogs away from nests, predator fences, diversionary feeding and habitat management that maintains open, sparsely vegetated nesting areas. Monitoring also helps managers identify when birds arrive, how many pairs settle, where nests are lost and how many chicks fledge.

Evidence from other Irish colonies illustrates why that detail matters. A 2024 report from Baltray recorded 201 hatchlings, with 156—77%—hatching in June. It documented seasonal declines in hatching success and egg losses linked to abandonment, corvid predation and high tides. Such records can reveal whether a colony’s main problem occurs before laying, during incubation or after hatching.
What does Kilcoole’s 2025 season mean for recovery?
The result is a serious setback for Kilcoole, not proof that recovery is impossible. RSPB Seabird Project Recovery Officer Chantal MacLeod-Nolan said Little Terns had been “in a downward spiral for years” but that early signs suggested they might be climbing back. Strong outcomes at several English colonies support that cautious optimism, while Kilcoole’s data show why protection and annual monitoring remain necessary.
The clearest conclusion is limited but important: Kilcoole had its worst breeding season in years by its own measures, yet the available evidence does not identify one definitive cause. Conservation decisions should therefore protect nesting space, reduce disturbance, manage predators and vegetation, and continue tracking food availability and movements among east-coast sites.
