What’s actually slowing this PC down?

KiCad is the better fit when openness, local control, and a transparent desktop workflow matter most. EasyEDA is the better fit when you want browser access, cloud collaboration, or a design editor tied closely to manufacturing and ordering. Neither is universally superior: your choice depends on how you store projects, share work, manage licenses, and move from schematic to fabricated board.
For an existing EasyEDA design, migration is possible, but it is not a one-click guarantee. KiCad documents importers for EasyEDA Standard and Pro schematic, PCB, and library data. You should preserve the original files, inspect every converted object, and run checks in KiCad before changing the design or ordering hardware.

What the choice means for an open-source hardware project
KiCad and EasyEDA can both take a circuit from schematic capture to a routed printed-circuit board, but they embody different working models.
- KiCad is an open-source, locally installed electronics-design suite for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Most of its program source is released under GPL version 3 or later. Its official project goal is to provide a cross-platform electronics-design application for professional designers.
- EasyEDA Standard is primarily browser-based, with a desktop-client option. Its documentation presents schematic design, simulation, PCB design, and manufacturing as a connected workflow.
- EasyEDA Pro adds desktop operating modes that range from online collaboration to half-offline and full-offline use. It also documents direct JLCPCB order placement.
That distinction matters for open-source hardware because the editor is only one part of the project. You also need a durable copy of the source, reproducible libraries, clear licensing for symbols and footprints, reviewable design files, and a reliable way to generate fabrication outputs.

KiCad and EasyEDA compared
| Reader priority | KiCad | EasyEDA |
|---|---|---|
| Software licensing | Most source code is GPL-3.0-or-later. KiCad libraries use CC-BY-SA 4.0 with an exception for designs and generated files made with the library data. | Official pages describe free core use and paid service options, but they do not establish an equivalent open-source license for the editor. |
| Where you work | Desktop applications for Linux, Windows, and macOS. | Standard is browser-oriented with a desktop option. Pro desktop supports online, half-offline, and full-offline modes. |
| Project storage | Projects are managed locally in the desktop environment; you choose your own backup and synchronization system. | Storage and collaboration depend on the Standard or Pro mode. Offline Pro modes keep projects and, in some cases, libraries local; online mode uses cloud services. |
| Collaboration | Use your own version-control, file-sharing, or review process around local project files. | Online workflows are designed for cloud access and collaboration; offline modes trade some cloud features for local control. |
| EasyEDA migration | Documented import support covers EasyEDA Standard and Pro schematic, PCB, and library data. Project-level import is not listed as a general importer. | Exports and imports vary by edition and target format. Standard design data is JSON; Pro project archives are ZIP files containing JSON Lines data. |
| Manufacturing handoff | KiCad supports fabrication outputs including Gerber and IPC-2581. | Manufacturing and ordering are integrated into the documented workflow, including a Pro quick-start path for JLCPCB orders. |
| Cost model | The software is free; account for your own time, storage, and any third-party services. | Core features are described as free, with optional subscriptions and enterprise private deployment. Current boundaries can change. |
The table is a workflow comparison, not a claim that one tool produces better boards or lower fabrication prices. Board quality still depends on the circuit, component choices, layout, constraints, and verification work.
Why KiCad is usually the stronger open-source choice
Program openness and local ownership
KiCad states that most of its source code is distributed under the GNU GPL version 3 or later. You can install the applications locally and keep project files under your own storage policy. This is valuable when a project must remain usable without a vendor account, a browser session, or a particular cloud service.
KiCad’s platform and licensing information is available on its license page and About KiCad page. Check the release documentation for the operating-system requirements of the version you intend to deploy; requirements can change between releases.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A library license that distinguishes tools from designs
KiCad documents its official libraries separately from the program. The libraries are under CC-BY-SA 4.0, with an exception stating that using library data in an electronic design does not by itself force that design to adopt the library license or require attribution. Redistributing the library collection as a collection has its own license and attribution obligations; read the libraries license terms if you plan to mirror or bundle them.
This separation is important for open-source hardware publishers. Editing a board in KiCad does not automatically make the board’s hardware design GPL. Your design files, documentation, firmware, and third-party symbols or footprints each need their own licensing decisions.

Where EasyEDA can be the more practical fit
Browser access and shared projects
EasyEDA Standard is documented as a browser-based editor, with a desktop client available. A browser workflow can reduce installation friction for a classroom, a distributed team, or a contributor who moves between computers. Cloud storage can also make it easier to open a project from multiple locations, provided your project and access policies allow that.
Several offline choices in Pro
EasyEDA Pro’s desktop-client documentation describes three operating patterns:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Online mode: cloud-oriented projects, libraries, and collaboration.
- Half-offline mode: a local working arrangement with some online services still available, depending on the feature.
- Full-offline mode: local project work without the normal online connection.
These modes affect login requirements, where projects and libraries are stored, whether collaborators can see changes immediately, and whether cloud system libraries are available. Read the current Pro desktop client FAQ before standardizing a team workflow. Standard’s storage behavior is covered in its editor FAQ.
A short path from layout to an order
EasyEDA’s Standard quick start describes schematic capture, simulation, PCB design, and manufacturing as one workflow. The Pro quick start includes an order-placement path. This can be convenient when the same service, component library, and fabrication process are already part of your project.
Convenience does not remove the need to inspect generated files. Confirm footprints, drill sizes, board outlines, copper clearances, assembly options, and the final manufacturing outputs independently of the ordering interface.

Licensing open-source hardware in either tool
Do not equate free access with open-source software
EasyEDA’s Standard FAQ says the tool is free for individual, business, and education use. Its plans and pricing page describes free core features, optional annual subscriptions, and enterprise private deployment. Those statements describe product access and service tiers; they do not establish that the editor itself is open-source or that every supplied symbol, footprint, model, or uploaded asset has a license suitable for redistribution.
Track every asset you publish
For an open hardware release, keep a manifest for:
- Schematic symbols and PCB footprints.
- 3D models, simulation models, and downloaded manufacturer data.
- Any vendor reference design or application-circuit fragment.
- Design files, fabrication outputs, assembly drawings, and documentation.
Record the license and source of each item. A permissive license on your own board cannot grant rights you do not have over a downloaded asset. This applies whether the original design was edited in KiCad, EasyEDA Standard, or EasyEDA Pro.
How EasyEDA formats affect a KiCad migration
Standard and Pro are different formats
“EasyEDA” is not one interchange format. KiCad’s import-format overview lists support for EasyEDA Standard and EasyEDA Pro. The detailed EasyEDA importer guide explains the format differences and version-specific behavior.
- EasyEDA Standard design data is JSON.
- EasyEDA Pro project archives are ZIP files containing JSON Lines files.
- The documented KiCad importers cover schematic, PCB, and library data.
- The importer overview does not list a universal project-level import.
The detailed guide says Standard does not support project-level import. For a Pro archive containing multiple schematics or boards, KiCad can present a project chooser. That is a migration aid, not evidence that every project setting, relationship, or editor-specific feature will transfer unchanged.
Step-by-step: move an EasyEDA design into KiCad
- Identify the edition. Determine whether the source is EasyEDA Standard or Pro. Do not start with a generic “EasyEDA export” assumption; the file structures and importer paths differ.
- Freeze the source. Make an untouched, read-only copy of the original project, including its libraries, custom footprints, models, and documentation. Work on a duplicate so you can compare or retry.
- Export using the documented path. Use the edition’s current export function and retain the original JSON or Pro ZIP archive. Avoid renaming internal files or unpacking and repacking an archive unless the documentation requires it.
- Install a current KiCad release. Confirm the release supports the EasyEDA format you have. The importer documentation describes version-specific behavior and areas that are not fully understood.
- Import the schematic. Open KiCad’s schematic editor and choose the EasyEDA import operation described in the current documentation. Save the resulting KiCad schematic in a new project location.
- Import the PCB. Open the PCB editor’s import path for EasyEDA data. Check the board outline, layer assignments, copper zones, vias, footprints, and text immediately after conversion.
- Import or rebuild libraries. Bring in custom symbols and footprints through the documented library importer where applicable. If an item does not convert cleanly, locate the original source and rebuild it deliberately instead of silently substituting a similar part.
- Reconnect the project structure. Because project-level import is not generally available for Standard, create the KiCad project and associate the converted schematic, board, and libraries yourself.
- Run destination checks. Annotate and update the schematic as needed, run electrical-rule checks, then run PCB design-rule checks. Resolve every intentional exception and investigate every unexpected one.
- Compare against the source. Open both versions and compare net names, component references, values, footprints, board dimensions, mounting holes, keepouts, constraints, and critical geometry.
- Generate fresh outputs. Produce Gerbers, drill files, pick-and-place data, drawings, and any IPC-2581 output from the validated KiCad project. Do not order from an unreviewed conversion.
What to inspect after conversion
Schematic checks
- Every component reference and value is present and unique.
- Power symbols, net labels, hierarchical connections, and no-connect markers survived.
- Pin numbers and electrical types still match the intended symbols.
- Hidden pins, alternate units, and custom fields have not been dropped.
- The footprint assigned to each component is the intended package and pad numbering matches the symbol.
PCB checks
- The outline is closed and has the correct dimensions, corner radii, slots, and mounting holes.
- Board layers, copper pours, keepouts, and courtyard information are correct.
- Tracks connect to the intended pads and no critical trace was converted to a graphic.
- Footprint origins, rotations, polarity marks, reference text, and assembly markings are usable.
- Clearances, widths, drill sizes, impedance structures, and high-voltage spacing follow your manufacturing rules.
Rules and metadata
Conversion can lose or reinterpret editor-specific rules, annotations, 3D links, simulation settings, or library relationships. Compare the rule set explicitly rather than assuming visual similarity means electrical equivalence. The KiCad format guide documents supported areas and limitations; treat it as a description of behavior, not a promise of perfect interchange.

Manufacturing handoff: different strengths, same responsibility
KiCad’s project information lists fabrication outputs such as Gerber and IPC-2581. Those files are useful because they can be sent to a range of fabricators without requiring the editor’s cloud service. You remain responsible for selecting the correct layer stack, aperture settings, drill formats, board finish, and assembly files.
EasyEDA’s documentation connects editing to manufacturing and order placement. That can shorten the path from a completed layout to a board order, particularly when the project’s parts and fabrication choices are already supported by the service. It does not guarantee a correct order: verify the generated preview, panelization, substitutions, drill files, and revision identifier before payment.
For either tool, archive the exact source revision used to create the manufacturing package. Include a bill of materials, assembly drawing, fabrication drawing, and a text file recording the date, editor version, and output settings.
Cost, access, and operational trade-offs
KiCad’s visible cost is zero, but setup has a cost
KiCad is free software, yet a team may spend time learning its editors, creating local library conventions, configuring version control, and establishing review procedures. Those investments can be worthwhile when long-term access and reproducibility matter more than the fastest first board.
Recommended Free Tools
EasyEDA’s free tier is not the whole service model
EasyEDA describes core features as free while also offering optional paid plans and private enterprise deployment. Pricing, quotas, collaboration controls, and offline capabilities can change, so check the current pricing page before budgeting or promising a capability to a client. Treat a cloud account, network dependency, and service terms as part of the project’s operational risk assessment.

Common failure modes and fixes
The importer opens the file but the board is wrong
Stop before editing. Compare the outline, layers, footprints, pad numbers, and net connectivity with the source. Re-export from the correct EasyEDA edition, then import into a clean KiCad project. If the mismatch persists, rebuild the affected footprint or board feature manually and document the change.
A symbol has no usable footprint
Check the source footprint reference and library path. Import the custom footprint separately or assign a verified KiCad footprint, then confirm pad numbering against the datasheet. Never select a package solely because its dimensions look similar.
Cloud libraries are unavailable offline
In EasyEDA Pro, offline mode changes access to cloud system libraries and collaboration. Before disconnecting, download or locally cache the libraries and models your project requires, and confirm that the chosen mode supports the intended operation.
Team members cannot reproduce the same result
Record the editor edition and version, export settings, library revisions, and manufacturing-output settings. Store source files and custom libraries together under a controlled revision process. A screenshot of a board is not a reproducible design archive.
Choose with this decision framework
Choose KiCad when
- You require an open-source desktop application and want to inspect its licensing and source model.
- Projects must remain usable locally without a vendor account or browser service.
- You are prepared to establish your own collaboration, backup, and library-management process.
- You want fabrication outputs that can be handed to independent manufacturing services.
- You are publishing hardware and need a clear separation between tool licenses, library licenses, and your design license.
Choose EasyEDA when
- Browser access and built-in cloud collaboration are central to the team.
- You prefer a documented online, half-offline, or full-offline Pro mode matched to your working conditions.
- You value a short path from schematic and PCB editing to an integrated manufacturing or ordering workflow.
- Your team accepts service-account, storage, and pricing dependencies and verifies the current terms.
Use both when migration is temporary or roles differ
A team can keep an original EasyEDA project for historical reference while validating a KiCad conversion for local maintenance, or use EasyEDA for collaborative capture and KiCad for a separately reviewed release. In either arrangement, designate one authoritative revision, preserve the other tool’s source files, and compare every manufacturing output before fabrication.
Final recommendation
For editing and maintaining open-source hardware over many years, KiCad is the safer default because its desktop workflow, program licensing, and local file ownership are explicit. EasyEDA is a sensible choice when cloud collaboration, browser access, or an integrated order path outweighs the benefits of a fully local open-source tool. If you are migrating, treat the importer as a starting point: preserve the source, validate the schematic and PCB in detail, and generate manufacturing files only after the converted design passes your checks.
