Group-IB’s analysis, reported in October 2026, describes the harassment controls as unusual for a remote-access trojan with this breadth of capability.
What KGB RAT is and why it is different
KGB RAT is malware sold as a service to criminals. Once installed on a Windows computer, it gives an operator remote control and tools for theft, surveillance and persistence. The unusual part is an “Extra” menu containing developer-labeled “fun settings”: the operator can trigger scream sounds, show jump scares or deliberately crash the machine and force a blue-screen event.

Group-IB characterized these controls as psychological harassment. As reproduced by Help Net Security, the company said: “The harassment and psychological distress features — screamer functions, forced blue screens, and what the developers label ‘fun settings’ — are less common in RAT tooling at this capability level.” The behavior suggests that the criminals are not only stealing data; they can also weaponize a victim’s anxiety while the intrusion is taking place.
What the malware can do
Remote control and surveillance
- Remote desktop access lets an operator view and interact with the Windows desktop.
- File-management functions allow files to be browsed, copied or manipulated remotely.
- Webcam and microphone access can turn the PC into a surveillance device.
- A keylogger can record typed information, including credentials and messages.
- Password-recovery features are intended to extract saved or otherwise recoverable passwords.
Persistence and evasion
KGB RAT includes mechanisms intended to survive reboots and avoid discovery. The analyzed capabilities include obfuscation, changing or updating a crypter, sandbox detection, and attempts to disable or bypass security protections. These features can make a simple visual symptom—such as a sudden crash—less useful than a full endpoint investigation.

Notifications, profiling and cryptocurrency theft
The malware can notify an operator through the Telegram Bot API when a new device is infected. It also performs IP-geolocation profiling through ip-api.com. One analyzed sample contained a CryptoClipper module that replaced cryptocurrency wallet addresses copied to the clipboard with attacker-controlled addresses. Anyone sending digital currency from an infected computer could therefore paste an address that silently points to the attacker.
How the threat developed and was sold
TechRadar reported that KGB RAT was advertised on underground forums from late 2025. Infrastructure evidence identified by researchers reaches back to January 2022, indicating that development or operational groundwork predated the later marketing push. Help Net Security described public security reporting in September 2025, followed by broader promotion later that year.

Does a scream or forced blue screen prove infection?
No. A prank program, a damaged application, a failing driver or another type of malware could also cause frightening sounds or a crash. The reported KGB RAT controls become more concerning when they appear alongside unexplained cursor movement, new user accounts, disabled security tools, unknown processes, webcam activity, stolen passwords, suspicious cryptocurrency transfers or repeated outbound connections.
A fake missing-file message or a jump scare by itself is not a forensic identification. Treat the combination of symptoms as a possible compromise until the computer has been checked.

What to do if a Windows PC suddenly screams or crashes
- Disconnect it. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet. If the machine is used at work, tell the organization’s security or IT team before reconnecting it.
- Stop entering secrets. Do not sign in to banking, email, cryptocurrency or password-manager accounts on the possibly infected PC.
- Use a different, trusted device. Change important passwords there and enable multifactor authentication. Prioritize email, financial, administrator and cryptocurrency accounts.
- Preserve evidence. Record the time, screenshots, sounds, error messages, suspicious filenames and any unusual account or transaction activity. Avoid deleting files or repeatedly rebooting if a professional may need to examine the system.
- Get a current malware-removal assessment. Use a reputable, up-to-date security workflow, including an offline or rescue scan when available, or contact a trusted incident-response professional. The public reporting on KGB RAT does not provide a vendor-specific cleanup recipe.
- Review exposure after cleanup. Check browser-saved passwords, cryptocurrency clipboard transactions, email forwarding rules, new Windows accounts, startup entries and other devices that shared credentials with the affected PC.
What defenders should monitor
Organizations should prioritize behavioral monitoring for remote desktop abuse, credential theft, unauthorized webcam or microphone access, persistence changes, security-tool tampering and unusual Telegram-related outbound traffic. Detection decisions should be based on current telemetry and verified security-product coverage; the reporting on KGB RAT does not establish that any particular vendor detects every sample.
For an enterprise response, useful evaluation criteria include remote-access-trojan detection, offline or rescue-scan support, behavioral monitoring, credential-theft protection, update cadence, business-endpoint coverage and access to incident-response assistance.

The practical takeaway
KGB RAT is notable because it adds intimidation to a conventional malware-for-hire toolkit. Screams, jump scares and forced blue screens are attention-grabbing symptoms, but the serious risk remains covert access to files, credentials, cameras, microphones and cryptocurrency transactions. Isolate a computer showing those symptoms, protect accounts from another device, preserve evidence and obtain a professional or reputable malware-removal assessment before trusting it again.
