In Microsoft Edge, Ctrl+S on Windows saves the current page, while Command+S on macOS saves the current tab. To obtain the original image file, focus the image, open its context menu, and choose the image-saving command if the site and browser provide one. To capture what is visible instead, use Firefox Screenshots or Edge Screenshot.
First decide: original image or screenshot?
These are different outcomes:
- Original image: the file supplied by the website, potentially at its native dimensions and format. Use the image context menu when available.
- Screenshot: a new PNG or other capture of rendered page pixels. It may include overlays, browser scaling, and only the portion you select; it is not necessarily the source file or its original resolution.
Your choice determines the shortcut. The page-save shortcut is not an image-download shortcut.

Save the original image in a browser
- Move the pointer over the image, or use the keyboard to focus the image if the page supports keyboard navigation.
- Open the context menu. In Edge on Windows, Shift+F10 is the documented keyboard route; a mouse right-click is another option.
- Choose the image-save item, such as an option labeled to save the image, when it appears.
- Pick a folder and filename in the browser’s save dialog, then confirm.
The menu is contextual. It may show link commands instead of image commands if the focus is on a surrounding link, and some sites disable or replace right-click behavior. An image displayed through a canvas, CSS background, protected viewer, or application component may not expose an original-file command at all.
When the image command is missing
- Click the image itself before opening the menu; the active element matters.
- Open the image in a new tab when the site offers that link, then invoke the menu on the standalone image.
- Use the browser’s page information or developer tools only when you are authorized to access the asset; those methods can reveal a different URL than the visible preview.
- If you only need what is on screen, switch to a screenshot workflow rather than trying to recover a protected source file.
Capture a region or full page with Firefox
Firefox Screenshots starts with Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS. It can identify page parts, capture a selected region, capture the visible page, or capture the full page. After choosing the area, use the on-screen download control; the documented keyboard save command is Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux or Command+S on macOS, and the resulting screenshot is a PNG.

- Open the page and wait until the content you need is rendered.
- Press the Firefox Screenshots shortcut.
- Select a highlighted page part, drag a region, or choose visible-page/full-page capture.
- Use the download/save control and select a destination if Firefox asks for one.
A full-page capture records the rendered page, not the original image assets. Lazy-loaded content may need to be scrolled into view before it appears, depending on the page.
Capture with Edge Screenshot
In Edge on Windows, Ctrl+Shift+S opens Screenshot. Select an area or the full page, then use Edge’s copy or save control. Microsoft documents the feature, but the exact shortcut and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version; verify the current Edge help if the command does not open.
Magnify is not a save command
Edge can magnify an image after you open its context menu. Magnify enlarges viewing only; it does not download the original image or create a saved screenshot.

Why Ctrl+S often surprises people
Ctrl+S (or Command+S) belongs to the browser’s page-saving workflow. It can save an HTML page and associated resources or open a dialog for the page, but it does not mean “download whichever image is under the pointer.” If your goal is a source file, use the image context menu. If your goal is a visual record, start a screenshot tool first and then save that capture.
Browser and platform limits
The documented combinations above cover Edge’s Windows shortcuts and Firefox on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Do not assume the same keys or menu labels in Chrome, Safari, Android, iPhone, or other browsers. Their current image-saving procedures were not established by the cited documentation. On macOS, the reviewed Edge shortcut list does not establish a keyboard equivalent for opening an image context menu, so use the platform’s normal context-click gesture or the browser’s current help.
Troubleshooting
Ctrl+S saves a web page instead of the picture
That is expected behavior in Edge. Return to the image, open its context menu, and choose the image-specific command. Use a screenshot shortcut only when a capture is acceptable.

Shift+F10 opens the wrong menu
Keyboard focus is on the wrong element. Move focus to the image or click it before pressing the shortcut. If the page is an application with custom focus handling, use a mouse context click or open the image separately.
The site blocks right-click
Blocking the menu does not change the distinction between a source file and a screenshot. Try the site’s own download control or an authorized standalone image link. Otherwise use Firefox Screenshots or Edge Screenshot for a permitted visual capture. Edge’s Magnify feature only enlarges the view.

The screenshot is cropped or missing content
Choose full-page rather than visible-page capture, or drag a larger selection. Wait for images and other dynamic content to render before starting. Some pages load content only after scrolling, so scroll through the required area first.

The shortcut does nothing
Check that the browser window has focus, that another application or extension has not remapped the keys, and that your browser version supports the feature. Microsoft notes that Edge Screenshot behavior can vary; Firefox and Edge labels can also change over time. Consult the browser’s current help for your edition and operating system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a single keyboard shortcut that always saves the image under the cursor?
Not with the documented Edge shortcuts. The browser must know which element is active and whether the site exposes an image file, so use the contextual image command or a screenshot workflow.
Does a full-page screenshot preserve the image’s original quality?
No. It records rendered page pixels at the capture viewport and scale; it is not a guarantee of the source image’s dimensions, format, or compression.
