Kerberos Ticket Attacks FAQ: Ticket Lifetimes, KRBTGT Rotation, and Incident Response

Short answer: Microsoft’s documented default maximum lifetime for a user Kerberos ticket-granting ticket (TGT) is 10 hours, but your domain’s configured value controls reality. If the KRBTGT secret may be exposed, recovery requires two password resets, with the first change replicated throughout the domain and a wait at least as long as the longest configured user or service-ticket lifetime before the second reset. The sequence invalidates tickets based on the older KRBTGT secrets, but it can disrupt applications and does not by itself remove an attacker who still controls domain resources.

What the 10-hour setting actually means

Kerberos normally begins when a client obtains a ticket-granting ticket (TGT) from a domain controller’s Key Distribution Center (KDC). The client presents that TGT when requesting service tickets for file servers, databases, web applications, and other Kerberos-enabled services. The policy named Maximum lifetime for user ticket controls how long a user TGT can be used before it expires or must be renewed.

Microsoft’s policy documentation gives 10 hours as both the recommended value and the documented default. That page is legacy Windows 10 documentation, last updated in 2017, so treat 10 hours as a Microsoft policy reference rather than proof that every domain uses it. Check the effective policy in each affected domain. A value of zero means user TGTs do not expire, which materially changes both attack exposure and recovery timing.

Service tickets have their own maximum-lifetime setting. Microsoft’s forest-recovery guidance uses the default 10-hour maximum for both user and service tickets when describing KRBTGT rotation. If either effective value is longer in your environment, the interval between KRBTGT resets must be longer than that value. Ticket lifetime is therefore an operational input to incident recovery, not merely a tuning preference.

Where to verify the effective policy

  1. On a system with the applicable domain policy, open the Group Policy management tools.
  2. Browse to Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Account Policies > Kerberos Policy.
  3. Record Maximum lifetime for user ticket and Maximum lifetime for service ticket, including any domain-level or organizational-unit policy that overrides the default domain policy.
  4. Confirm that domain controllers have received the resulting policy and document the longest effective value before setting a recovery schedule.

Short lifetimes reduce the window in which a stolen ticket remains usable, but they increase authentication traffic and can create more renewal failures for disconnected, high-latency, or non-Windows clients. Very long lifetimes make stolen credentials and forged tickets useful for longer. A value of zero removes normal expiration as a containment mechanism and requires especially careful incident planning.

Golden Tickets, Silver Tickets, and Kerberoasting are different attacks

These terms are often grouped together because they involve Kerberos, but they target different secrets and produce different evidence. Use the distinction to choose the right investigation path.

Technique Forged or obtained material Secret targeted How access is used Primary investigation focus
Golden Ticket Forged ticket-granting ticket (TGT) KRBTGT account password hash The holder presents the TGT to a KDC and requests service tickets for resources Domain-controller, identity, ticket-lifetime, encryption, and unusual service-request activity
Silver Ticket Forged ticket-granting service (TGS) ticket Target service account secret The forged ticket is aimed at a particular service and may not require normal KDC issuance for each use The service account, SPN, target host, and service-specific authentication logs
Kerberoasting Legitimately requested service-ticket material retained for offline password guessing Password of an account registered with a service principal name (SPN) An attacker requests tickets for SPN-linked accounts, then guesses the password offline SPN exposure, weak service-account passwords, ticket-request patterns, and recovered-account credentials

A Golden Ticket is not the same thing as a Kerberoasting output. The former depends on the KRBTGT hash and forges a TGT; the latter obtains service-ticket material through normal protocol requests and attacks the service account password offline. Resetting KRBTGT does not repair a weak SPN-linked account, and changing a service account password does not invalidate a Golden Ticket.

How a Golden Ticket changes the threat picture

The KRBTGT account is the domain KDC’s trust anchor for issuing TGTs. An attacker who obtains its password hash can create a TGT that appears to be issued for an Active Directory identity and then use it to request service tickets. Forged tickets can contain unusual lifetimes or encryption choices, but no single anomaly proves forgery. Investigators must correlate ticket data with domain-controller, endpoint, identity, and application records.

A KRBTGT reset addresses tickets that rely on old KRBTGT secrets. It does not clean an endpoint, remove a malicious scheduled task, revoke every other credential, or stop an intruder who still has domain-controller access. If the adversary retains privileged access, the new KRBTGT secret can be stolen again and persistence can continue.

Why KRBTGT must be reset twice

Active Directory keeps a current KRBTGT password and the previous password in its password history. This two-password design allows domain controllers to continue validating tickets during an ordinary password change. A single reset therefore leaves the previous secret available for validation.

Microsoft’s forest-recovery procedure calls for two resets. The first change replaces the current secret and places the former current secret in history. After that change has replicated to every relevant domain controller and the maximum ticket lifetime has elapsed, the second change replaces the secret again and removes the older KRBTGT value from the usable history. MITRE describes this sequence as the way to invalidate existing Golden Tickets based on the previous hash.

The order matters: resetting twice in rapid succession can leave domain controllers with inconsistent password views and can allow tickets signed with an older secret to remain accepted somewhere in the environment. Replication health and elapsed ticket lifetime are prerequisites, not administrative niceties.

Preparing a controlled double reset

Establish scope and authority

  • Confirm that the suspected exposure involves the KRBTGT secret or a compromise broad enough that its exposure is plausible. Do not rotate it solely because an unrelated service account was found weak.
  • Identify every domain, trust, forest-recovery dependency, and domain controller that could validate or issue tickets.
  • Assign an incident commander, directory-services owner, application owners, and communications contact. Treat the change as a recovery action, not routine maintenance.

Measure policy and replication conditions

  • Record the effective maximum user-ticket and service-ticket lifetimes. Use the longer value to calculate the minimum wait.
  • Check replication convergence and domain-controller health before the first reset. A reset that has not reached all controllers cannot provide a consistent boundary.
  • Inventory critical AD-dependent applications, scheduled tasks, services, non-Windows clients, and systems using legacy encryption. CISA warns that ticket invalidation can disrupt these dependencies.

Plan the operating window

  • Choose a period when application owners can test authentication and respond to failures.
  • Prepare break-glass access that does not depend on an unverified cached Kerberos ticket, while protecting those credentials separately.
  • Define success criteria: replication convergence, successful fresh logons, service-ticket issuance, and monitoring coverage after each reset.

Safe sequence for the two resets

  1. Capture the baseline. Record domain-controller replication status, effective ticket policies, critical service dependencies, and current alerts. Preserve relevant logs before changing credentials.
  2. Perform the first KRBTGT password reset using your organization’s approved privileged-administration procedure. Do not improvise a script during an active incident; use a controlled account and change record.
  3. Verify replication. Confirm that every domain controller in scope has received the first password change and is healthy. Investigate replication errors before continuing.
  4. Wait longer than the longest effective ticket lifetime. Microsoft’s default example is at least 10 hours when both user and service-ticket maxima are 10 hours. If policy is longer, wait longer; if a policy is zero, obtain specialist guidance because normal expiration cannot provide the boundary.
  5. Test representative services. Have application owners obtain fresh tickets and authenticate from representative Windows, non-Windows, and legacy clients. Record failures and avoid treating a single successful workstation logon as proof of enterprise readiness.
  6. Perform the second reset. Repeat the approved procedure only after the first change has replicated and the calculated interval has elapsed.
  7. Recheck convergence and operations. Verify replication, new TGT and service-ticket issuance, privileged access, and critical applications. Keep heightened monitoring in place while investigating the original compromise.

Microsoft’s forest-recovery guidance, updated in May 2025, uses a 10-hour default wait. CISA’s operational guidance likewise emphasizes replication health and waiting at least 10 hours in large environments. Those figures are defaults and recommendations, not a guarantee for a domain with custom policy, replication delay, or unusual clients.

What can break after a KRBTGT rotation

Resetting KRBTGT invalidates tickets that depend on the retired secrets. AD-dependent applications may suddenly require fresh authentication, and some non-Windows clients may be unable to request new tickets until their existing tickets expire or their Kerberos implementation is restarted. Legacy encryption settings and replication faults can make the symptoms appear unrelated to the reset.

Symptoms and focused checks

Symptom Likely checks
Users receive repeated authentication prompts Confirm the client obtained a new TGT, check time synchronization, and inspect domain-controller authentication errors.
One application fails while Windows logon works Check the application’s SPN, service account, encryption support, cached tickets, and owner-specific logs.
Only some sites or clients fail Compare domain-controller replication status, DNS discovery, client platform, and whether the failing site has a reachable KDC.
Services recover after restart Document stale ticket caching and schedule controlled restarts; do not assume the underlying dependency is permanently fixed.

Do not immediately repeat the reset because an application failed. First establish whether the failure is caused by incomplete replication, stale client state, an SPN problem, unsupported encryption, or an unrelated pre-existing issue. Escalate to directory and application specialists when the cause is unclear.

Kerberoasting defenses and investigation

Kerberoasting begins with SPN-associated service tickets. The attacker can retain the ticket material and perform password guessing offline, without repeatedly contacting the KDC. MITRE notes that some ticket material may use RC4, which is a useful clue when reviewing encryption patterns but is not proof of abuse.

  • Use long, unique, complex passwords for service-principal accounts and rotate them under a documented ownership process.
  • Replace suitable user-based service accounts with group managed service accounts (gMSAs), which provide managed password rotation and reduce exposure to human-selected passwords.
  • Remove stale or unnecessary SPNs and disable accounts that no longer run a service.
  • Monitor unusual volumes of service-ticket requests and correlate the requester, target SPN, encryption type, endpoint, and timing.

A KRBTGT reset does not change any service-account password. If Kerberoasting is suspected, investigate and remediate the affected SPN-linked accounts separately.

Detection signals for forged or abused tickets

Microsoft Defender for Identity documents Golden Ticket alert patterns that include suspicious ticket lifetimes, encryption downgrades compared with learned behavior, and certain service requests without an associated preceding authentication request. It also documents a Kerberoasting-related SPN exposure alert. These detections are leads for correlation, not standalone verdicts.

Evidence to correlate

  • Domain-controller Kerberos events showing unusual lifetimes, encryption types, request timing, or source systems.
  • Endpoint evidence for credential theft, unauthorized administrative tools, persistence, and lateral movement.
  • Identity records showing unexpected privilege use, logons from unusual locations, and service-account activity outside its normal workload.
  • Application and server logs that confirm whether the ticket was accepted and what resource was accessed.

Preserve logs before changing retention settings or restarting systems. Establish a timeline that separates the first suspicious ticket from the KRBTGT reset, because post-reset failures and new malicious activity have different meanings.

Why the double reset is only one recovery action

Microsoft’s forest-recovery material and MITRE’s Golden Ticket guidance describe what the rotation invalidates: tickets dependent on the old KRBTGT secrets. They do not claim that rotation repairs a domain-wide compromise. A complete response may also require rebuilding or cleaning domain controllers, resetting privileged and service-account credentials, removing persistence, reviewing trusts, validating backup integrity, and checking endpoints from which the KRBTGT hash could have been obtained.

If an attacker may still control a domain controller or equivalent privileged account, coordinate with qualified incident responders before declaring recovery complete. Otherwise, the attacker can reacquire the new secret or issue other credentials after the rotation.

Choosing ticket-lifetime settings after recovery

Policy choice Security effect Operational effect Use only when
Shorter than the documented 10-hour default Reduces the useful life of a stolen ticket Increases renewals, KDC load, and sensitivity to outages or disconnected clients You have measured application compatibility and capacity
10 hours Matches Microsoft’s documented default and recovery example Provides a familiar baseline for support and planning The domain’s workloads and clients are compatible with the baseline
Longer than 10 hours Extends the window for stolen or forged tickets Reduces renewal frequency and may help specialized or intermittently connected clients The longer lifetime is justified, documented, and included in KRBTGT recovery calculations
Zero (no expiration) Removes normal TGT expiration as a containment boundary Creates exceptional recovery and incident-response complexity Only after specialist risk review; never assume the default wait is sufficient

Document the policy with the domain and date, because the correct KRBTGT interval depends on the effective configuration at the time of the incident. Revisit the setting after recovery only through normal change control and compatibility testing.
