Is there a medicine shortage in Kerala government hospitals? The available reports from January 2024 do not settle that question statewide. Health Minister Veena George told the Kerala Assembly that essential-list medicines were stocked and patients faced no shortage. An earlier report described gaps in particular facilities and medicines. Those accounts cover different scopes, and neither provides comparable hospital-by-hospital inventory data.
What the health minister told the Assembly
On January 29, 2024, Health Minister Veena George responded to an Assembly query from opposition MLA Anoop Jacob by saying medicines on the essential drug list were stocked in hospitals through the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL). PTI reported her statement: “We have ensured the stock of medicines in all hospitals. There is no shortage of medicines for the patients.” PTI report, January 29, 2024

PTI described KMSCL as the central procurement agency for essential drugs and equipment for public healthcare institutions. The minister also cited ₹554 crore as the value of medicines distributed in the then-current financial year through January, compared with ₹256 crore distributed through government hospitals in 2015–16. These were government figures reported by PTI; distribution value does not by itself establish whether a particular medicine was available at a particular hospital when a patient needed it.

On January 4, Onmanorama reported medicine gaps at particular facilities, including shortages of cancer medicines and essential drugs. The report also described a KMSCL warehouse visit in which reporters requested around 40 listed items and obtained 10. These are outlet-reported observations, not an official statewide inventory audit. Onmanorama report, January 4, 2024

Why the accounts do not resolve the statewide question

The distinction matters because a statewide statement about essential-list supply and a report about particular medicines or locations are not direct tests of the same thing. Distribution totals also measure medicines sent through the system, not whether each facility had each needed item at the point of care.

What can be said about medicine availability now
These reports document statements and observations from January 2024. They do not establish current stocks in Kerala government hospitals in 2026. The available accounts do not include audited facility inventories or current KMSCL stock data, so they cannot support a present-day statewide yes-or-no answer.
