Ken Kutaragi, the engineer widely known as the creator of PlayStation, says games have grown larger and more visually sophisticated without fundamentally changing how their content is made. But he does not think the medium has reached its limits: speaking at a university event in Japan, he urged developers and students to stay curious and help create what comes next.
What Kutaragi said about games stagnating
Kutaragi made the remarks during a panel at the September 29, 2026, opening ceremony for the Creative Entertainment Research and Education Center (CEREC) at Japan’s University of Electro-Communications. CEREC is a university hub for research and education in games and entertainment, bringing engineering and science together with creative development and industry collaboration. The university’s official site provides institutional context; the event account was reported by 4Gamer.

His complaint was not simply that modern games are too big or too polished. In his view, technical scale and visual sophistication have advanced, while the basic approach to creating game content has not fundamentally moved on from the era of the original PlayStation project he led. That is Kutaragi’s diagnosis, not a demonstrated finding about every game or studio.

He used that history to argue for pushing beyond established methods, rather than treating the approaches that worked before as sufficient now. 4Gamer’s Japanese event report recounts his account.

Why he sees a turning point, not an ending
Kutaragi paired the criticism with optimism: he does not consider the game industry mature or close to its ceiling. He expects major breakthroughs and sees the sector approaching another stage. In his framing, stagnation is a reason to explore, not evidence that games have run out of possibilities.
That distinction matters. Games can keep expanding in production scale and visual fidelity while still leaving room for deeper changes in how experiences are conceived and built. Kutaragi’s remarks point toward that creative and technical gap; they do not establish that the whole industry is stagnant or predict a particular breakthrough.

His message to developers and students: keep asking what is possible
Automaton West reported his translated warning: “The moment you lose your curiosity and think, This is probably as good as it gets, it’s all over.” That English wording is a translation reported by Automaton West from Japanese event coverage, not a verified English-language transcript.

His broader challenge, as paraphrased by 4Gamer, was to look ahead several steps, consider what is coming and what people might bring about, and build together. For students and industry professionals, the practical point is to take an active role in shaping technology and creative practice rather than merely follow developments elsewhere.

- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
- Question inherited workflows: technical progress alone does not guarantee a new way to create games.
- Look beyond the current ceiling: Kutaragi treats today’s conventions as something to challenge, not the medium’s final form.
- Build collaboratively: his call is for people to help lead the next stage, not wait for it to arrive.
What the remarks do—and do not—show
Kutaragi’s comments are a prominent industry figure’s perspective shared at a panel, not independent evidence that all modern games or production teams have stopped innovating. The reports capture his argument and recollection; they do not offer a systematic comparison of game content or development methods across eras.
Automaton West reported a global game software market value of $186 billion in 2026, while 4Gamer described the global game software industry as roughly 30 trillion yen. Neither account, in the reviewed passages, identifies the original statistical publisher, and the figures’ scope and conversion basis are not established as comparable. They are best understood as numbers reported by those outlets, not as independently verified measurements of the industry’s creative health.
