KeeWeb is a free, open-source password manager that opens KeePass-compatible KDBX vaults in a web browser or in desktop applications for Linux, Windows, and macOS. You can keep the encrypted vault on your computer, place it in Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive, or host the KeeWeb application yourself on a static web server. KeeWeb is local-first: it does not send vault data over the network unless you explicitly initiate a network operation.

That makes KeeWeb a strong fit if you already use KeePass or KeePassXC, want a portable KDBX file, or prefer to control where the vault is stored. It is not a universal password-manager importer, however: the supported database format is KDBX (KeePass 2), not the older KDB (KeePass 1) format.

What KeeWeb is and how it works

KeeWeb is an open-source interface for KeePass 2 databases. The same application can run as a browser app or as a native desktop program. The desktop versions are available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, while the browser version runs from the official web deployment at app.keeweb.info.

Its central object is an encrypted KDBX file. Instead of requiring an account on a KeeWeb-hosted service, KeeWeb opens a vault file that you choose. The file can be on a local disk or in a supported cloud-storage location. KeeWeb reads and writes that file when you ask it to; the storage provider, rather than KeeWeb, is responsible for making the file available across devices.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

You can open an existing KDBX vault created by KeePass or KeePassXC, or create a new vault from KeeWeb. The application can therefore be introduced without migrating an established KeePass-family database into a proprietary format.

KeePass format support

Database format Support in KeeWeb What to do
KDBX (KeePass 2) Supported Open the file directly and use the existing master credentials and key files, if configured.
KDB (KeePass 1) Not supported Convert the database to KDBX with KeePass, then open the converted file in KeeWeb.
Other password-manager exports Not established by the documented compatibility information Use a documented export and conversion path that produces KDBX; do not assume every CSV or proprietary export can be imported directly.

Conversion from KDB to KDBX is a KeePass task, not a special KeeWeb import mode. Keep the original database and verify the converted vault before deleting anything.

Does KeeWeb upload your passwords?

KeeWeb’s documented design is local-first. Its FAQ says that the app never sends your data over the network unless you ask for it explicitly; data is stored locally and is not sent by network by default. In practical terms, opening a local vault does not require uploading the passwords to a KeeWeb account or server.

A network operation occurs when you choose one deliberately, such as opening or saving a vault in a cloud-storage location. The provider you select can then receive the encrypted KDBX file and synchronization metadata. KeeWeb’s local-first behavior does not make the device, the cloud account, or the backup destination automatically secure: a stolen unlocked device, a weak master password, or a compromised storage account can still expose your vault.

What remains on your side

  • Your master password and any key file must be protected; KeeWeb cannot recover a forgotten master password.
  • Devices that can open the vault need operating-system protection, screen locking, and current security updates.
  • Backups should be encrypted and tested. A second copy is useful only if you can restore and unlock it.
  • If a cloud provider stores the KDBX file, secure that provider account with its own two-factor authentication.

Browser app or desktop app?

The browser deployment is convenient on a machine where you do not want to install software. You open the web app, select a local or supported cloud vault, and work with the file in that browser session. A desktop installation is more suitable for a primary workstation, repeat offline use, or an environment where you want an application shortcut and a separately managed installation.

Where can a KeeWeb vault be stored?

The official project documentation lists local-file storage plus Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive. These are storage choices, not separate KeeWeb subscription plans. The KDBX file remains encrypted by the database format, while the provider controls account access, version history, sharing, and availability.

Storage choice Advantages Risks and responsibilities
Local disk No provider account is required; works offline and keeps the file under your direct control. Loss of the device can mean loss of the only copy, so maintain an encrypted backup.
Dropbox Convenient access across devices through a supported cloud location. Protect the Dropbox account with its security controls and review which devices can access the file.
Google Drive Cloud availability and provider-managed file history. Secure the Google account and avoid sharing the KDBX file unnecessarily.
Microsoft OneDrive Useful where Microsoft account and storage infrastructure are already in use. Secure the Microsoft account and check synchronization status before editing on multiple devices.

When two devices edit the same vault around the same time, cloud synchronization can create competing versions. Let the provider finish syncing before opening the file elsewhere, and keep a known-good backup before resolving any conflict.

Getting started with KeeWeb

The exact screen wording can vary slightly between a browser build and a desktop release, but the workflow is consistent: choose a vault file, unlock it, and save changes back to that file.

  1. Choose the deployment. Open app.keeweb.info in a browser, or install the desktop application for your operating system from the official project channels at keeweb.info.
  2. Open or create a vault. Select an existing KDBX file from local storage or a supported cloud location. To start over, choose the option to create a new database and save the resulting KDBX file in a location you control.
  3. Set the primary unlock method. Use a long, unique master password. If you add a key file, store it separately from the vault and keep a protected backup; possessing only one of the two will not unlock the database.
  4. Organize entries. Create groups that match your work or personal categories, and record usernames, passwords, URLs, and notes in the appropriate entries. Avoid placing the master password in an ordinary note or an unencrypted text file.
  5. Save and verify. Save the database, close it, and reopen the saved KDBX file. This confirms that the path, permissions, and unlock method work before you depend on the vault.
  6. Make a recovery copy. Copy the closed KDBX file to an encrypted backup medium. An encrypted USB flash drive is a reasonable neutral choice for an offline backup; keep it disconnected when not backing up.

Cloud storage and two-factor authentication

KeeWeb supports cloud-storage two-factor authentication, meaning the app can work with a provider account that requires a second factor during sign-in. This protects access to the storage account; it does not replace the KDBX master password.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Think of the controls as separate layers:

  • Storage-account 2FA: helps prevent someone who has only your cloud username and password from downloading the vault.
  • KDBX encryption: protects the contents of the file if the file is copied.
  • Device security: reduces the chance that an attacker can access an already-unlocked session or local copy.
  • Backup security: limits the damage from disk failure, accidental deletion, or ransomware.

Do not confuse successful cloud sign-in with successful vault unlock. You still need the KDBX credentials after the storage provider grants access to the file.

Using a YubiKey with KeeWeb

The FAQ documents optional YubiKey protection for the vault file. This is an additional factor for unlocking the database, distinct from two-factor authentication on Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive.

Before relying on a security key, confirm that the KeeWeb build and the key model support the protection method you intend to use. Register a replacement or recovery plan while you still have access to the vault, and keep the master password available as an emergency method if your configuration permits it. A lost or damaged key can otherwise turn into a lockout.

Security keys are not a substitute for backups. Back up the encrypted KDBX file, protect the master password, and store recovery material in a location that is separate from the everyday device.

Self-hosting KeeWeb

KeeWeb can be self-hosted because the application is delivered as static HTML assets. The FAQ states that a static server such as nginx, Apache, or IIS can serve it; no KeeWeb database server is required.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Basic deployment sequence

  1. Obtain the official web assets. Download the release from the project’s official distribution channel and verify that the files came from the project rather than an unofficial mirror.
  2. Choose a static web server. nginx, Apache, and IIS are examples named in the project FAQ. Configure a virtual host or site whose document root contains the KeeWeb HTML assets.
  3. Enable HTTPS. Use a valid certificate and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Encryption in transit protects the browser-to-server connection, even though the server is serving static application files.
  4. Restrict access if needed. Put the site behind your organization’s authentication, VPN, firewall, or allow-list when the deployment is private. Do not publish a sensitive internal deployment accidentally.
  5. Open the application and test a copy. Load the site, open a test KDBX file, save it, and confirm that the browser can still access the chosen local or cloud location.
  6. Plan updates. Track KeeWeb releases, replace old static assets deliberately, and test the deployment after an update before making it the default entry point.

Self-hosting changes who operates the web endpoint; it does not turn KeeWeb into a hosted synchronization service. You remain responsible for server patching, HTTPS certificates, access controls, backups of any locally stored vault, and the credentials used for cloud storage.

Security checklist for everyday use

  • Use a unique master password that is long enough to resist guessing and is not reused elsewhere.
  • Keep the KDBX file encrypted at rest and avoid leaving an unlocked session unattended.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on any cloud account that stores the vault.
  • Use a YubiKey only after confirming compatibility and establishing a recovery plan.
  • Maintain at least one offline, encrypted backup and periodically test restoration.
  • Do not email an unencrypted KDBX file or place it in an unprotected shared folder.
  • When moving between devices, verify the file path and timestamp so you do not edit an outdated copy.
  • Use HTTPS for a self-hosted deployment and keep the static server and operating system patched.

Cost, official distribution, and scam warnings

KeeWeb’s FAQ says the software will remain free and ad-free, at least for personal use. The project also warns that requests to pay for a “full version” or “ad removal” are probably scams. Use the web app at app.keeweb.info and desktop downloads linked from keeweb.info or the project’s official GitHub releases rather than a repackaged installer.

Free software does not mean zero operational cost. You may still pay for cloud storage, a security key, hosting, domain registration, or backup media, depending on your setup. Those services are optional components around the KeeWeb application, not a KeeWeb subscription.

Where KeeWeb fits compared with other password managers

A meaningful comparison should focus on architecture rather than a generic feature count. Use the following questions when evaluating alternatives:

Decision axis KeeWeb’s documented position Question to ask about an alternative
File portability Works with KeePass 2 KDBX files and can create new ones. Can you open and export a standard KDBX file without a proprietary conversion?
Where data lives Local files or named cloud-storage locations; no required KeeWeb-hosted account. Is the vault local, provider-hosted, or both, and who controls synchronization?
Network behavior Local-first; network operations occur when explicitly requested. Which telemetry, sync, or account operations are mandatory?
Access methods Browser app plus Linux, Windows, and macOS desktop apps. Are the platforms you need supported, and can you work offline?
Self-hosting A static server can serve the application assets. Can you operate the service without a vendor-managed backend?
Second factors Cloud-account 2FA and optional YubiKey protection are documented. Does the product protect both the storage account and the vault unlock process?
Pricing model Free and ad-free for personal use according to the FAQ. Is payment required for core use, synchronization, or additional devices?

Common problems and fixes

“My KDB file will not open.”

KDB is the KeePass 1 format, which KeeWeb does not support. Convert it to KDBX with KeePass, retain the original as a backup, and then open the converted file.

“The cloud file is missing my latest changes.”

Check that the previous device finished uploading and that you opened the same path on the second device. Close duplicate sessions, preserve the newest known-good copy, and resolve provider conflicts before continuing to edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The browser app cannot reach my self-hosted site.”

Check the HTTPS certificate, DNS record, web-server document root, and firewall rules. Confirm that the server is returning the KeeWeb HTML assets rather than a directory listing or an error page.

“I lost my YubiKey.”

Use the documented recovery method configured when the vault was created. If no recovery method exists and the key is required for the database, the master password alone may not be sufficient; this is why replacement and backup planning must happen before a key is lost.

Who should choose KeeWeb?

KeeWeb is most suitable for people who want a standard KDBX vault, already use KeePass or KeePassXC, need Linux/Windows/macOS and browser access, or want local and self-hosted control. It is less suitable if you require a turnkey hosted account, automatic migration from every password-manager format, or a vendor-managed synchronization service. In those cases, evaluate the storage, recovery, and import model before moving your credentials.
