Keeping Large Chart Previews and CSV Exports Consistent

Keep canonical data separate from viewport-dependent chart aggregates so zooming changes the preview, not the meaning of the CSV. Define export scope, formatting, and completeness clearly.

A chart preview and its CSV should come from separate representations of the same accepted data: keep canonical normalized rows as the export source, and build a viewport-sized aggregate only for drawing. Then state whether the download includes all loaded rows, applies filters or date ranges, and contains raw or display-formatted values. Zooming out may change how many marks the chart draws; it should not silently change what the CSV means.

Why a chart preview can differ from its CSV

A large time series often cannot be drawn efficiently as one mark per observation at every zoom level. A chart may therefore group or sample observations for display. That is a rendering optimization, not a change to the underlying dataset. A user who loads a year of minute candles and zooms out should not receive an aggregated CSV by accident merely because the preview uses fewer marks.

“Match” can mean different things: the same records, the same filters, the same date range, the same aggregation, or the same formatted values. Choose and document the contract. A robust default for a data tool is to export accepted canonical rows, with explicit controls for any intentional filtering, range restriction, or aggregation.

Keep canonical rows separate from drawing data

Use one authoritative dataset

Normalize and validate incoming records, then retain the accepted rows as the authoritative dataset. Use those rows for hover lookup and CSV generation. Maintain a separate drawing representation that can be rebuilt or selected according to viewport width and zoom. Never make the chart’s current display array the implicit export source.

Aggregate only what the chart needs

For OHLCV candles, a display group can preserve the first known open, maximum high, minimum low, final known close, and volume total when all contributing values are known. These semantics preserve the group’s broad price movement, but they do not make the group equivalent to its underlying candles. If a required value is missing, do not quietly imply that the group is complete; define how missing values are handled.

One implementation described by SiftingIO targets approximately one display group per two CSS pixels and returns to individual candles when zoomed in far enough. That is an implementation choice, not a universal charting rule. Choose a resolution appropriate to the chart and interaction, and calculate clipped groups at the visible range’s boundaries from observations inside that range. Cached interior groups can reduce repeated work while panning.

Keep viewport changes out of export semantics

Panning, zooming, resizing, and changing display resolution should alter drawing data only. They should not mutate the canonical rows or change CSV resolution. If the product offers a visible-range export or an aggregated export, make that a deliberate, labeled option rather than an unannounced side effect of the current preview.

Define exactly what the CSV contains

Before implementing download, decide the export scope, transformations, and value format. Put the contract near the download control or in its menu; “Export chart data” alone does not tell users enough.

Contract question Choices to state
Record scope All source records, all currently loaded records, the visible date range, or an aggregated representation
Filters Whether chart filters and date-range controls apply to the exported records
Fields All available columns or only fields currently visible in the visualization
Values Underlying numeric values or values formatted as displayed, including units, currencies, scaling, and rounding
Load state Whether incomplete, canceled, or limited results can be downloaded and how that status is communicated

Real products use different contracts. SAP Analytics Cloud says chart exports include all chart data, takes filters into account, and offers an “Include Formatting” behavior that can preserve displayed scaling, units, currencies, and even rounded display values. Google Data Studio documents that filters and date-range controls apply to exports; its table pagination behavior can affect whether all rows or only displayed rows are exported. Amazon Quick exports the fields currently visible in its visualization and excludes filtered-out data. TradingView describes exported data as what the chart shows and says it becomes available when loaded. These are product-specific behaviors, not general rules for charts or CSV files.

Separate displayed formatting from data values

A cell shown as “1.2K” may represent 1,200, and a displayed currency or rounded decimal may not preserve the underlying precision. If the export should be analysis-ready, emit the underlying value and label that choice. If it should reproduce what the user saw, disclose that formatting may preserve rounded or scaled display values. Avoid mixing formatted and raw columns without clear headers.

Make loading completeness visible

A download can be internally consistent and still be incomplete if the application has not loaded the full source. Treat completeness as explicit state, not an assumption based on whether rows exist.

  • Complete: the load finished successfully and no continuation remains.
  • Incomplete: a row ceiling was reached while a continuation cursor remains, or pagination repeats a cursor instead of advancing.
  • Canceled: the user or application stopped the request before completion.
  • Loading: a request is in progress; retain the last accepted dataset separately instead of presenting a partial replacement as finished.

Disable export when that is the safest behavior, or allow it only with an unmistakable label such as “Download loaded rows (incomplete).” Include enough status information for the user to understand whether the file covers all requested data. Do not describe a capped, stalled, or canceled load as complete.

Chunking can reduce some intermediate allocations, but it does not make memory use constant and does not turn a browser operation into disk streaming. Large exports still need a deliberate memory strategy and a clear limit policy.

Choose a rendering strategy by measuring the actual bottleneck

For large datasets, distinguish the number of source rows from the number represented in the preview, the number of prepared drawing items, and the number of rendered nodes or vertices. TanStack Charts’ large-data guidance recommends tracking these quantities separately. A smaller render count does not guarantee a faster application if aggregation, scene preparation, painting, interaction, or memory is the actual bottleneck.

  • Aggregate when the shape or summary of dense data matters more than every individual observation at the current scale.
  • Sample when a representative subset is suitable for the visual question, and disclose that the preview is sampled.
  • Use a bounded window when users need recent or nearby data rather than the entire history at once.
  • Render every observation only while each point remains meaningful and the preparation, interaction, and rendering costs are affordable.

Measure data preparation, scene compilation, paint time, interaction responsiveness, and memory under realistic zooming and panning. Changing rendering technology alone may not fix expensive data preparation or an oversized retained dataset. For streaming charts, define retention, rolling-window behavior, and whether the viewport follows new data; those choices affect what users see, but should not silently redefine what a download promises.

Product-specific export limits and safety

Documented limits differ by product and should not be treated as browser or industry standards. Google Data Studio documents a maximum of 750,000 rows for chart-data export. Amazon Quick documents a default CSV limit of 500 MB or one million rows, whichever comes first; separate subscription features have other limits. A tool should state its own cap, what happens at the cap, and whether the result is truncated or refused.

CSV files also carry a security concern: Amazon Quick warns that exported files can be vulnerable to CSV injection when imported data contains formulas or commands. Treat untrusted cell contents carefully, and tell users when exported data may require safe handling in spreadsheet software.

Keep image export separate from CSV export

An image export has pixel dimensions and raster density; neither describes CSV scope or values. TanStack’s export guidance explains that scale controls raster density rather than chart layout: its example turns a 1200 × 675 chart at scale 2 into a 2400 × 1350 canvas. Its rendering reference lists browser prerequisites for raster export, including a browser document and window, nonzero dimensions, Canvas 2D, and successful decoding for SVG sources. These constraints concern image generation, not the records in a CSV.

Implementation checklist

  1. Normalize and retain source rows. Keep the accepted canonical dataset independent from the chart’s draw-ready data.
  2. Derive a display representation. Aggregate, sample, or window data for the current viewport without overwriting source rows.
  3. Make export scope explicit. Identify whether download means all loaded rows, filtered rows, a visible range, visible fields, or aggregates.
  4. Specify value semantics. Say whether CSV contains raw values or display-formatted values, and disclose rounding, scaling, units, and currencies.
  5. Track load completeness. Distinguish successful completion, loading, capped or stalled pagination, and cancellation before enabling or labeling a download.
  6. Enforce and disclose limits. Define behavior at row and file-size caps, and account for potentially unsafe imported cell content.
  7. Profile the whole path. Measure preparation, rendering, interaction, and memory rather than relying on preview resolution alone.
