BlackLabelHQ’s MediEvil Recomp is an open beta for PC, and its maintainers say the code was written without AI. It aims to bring optional modern display and rendering features to the original PlayStation game, but it is unfinished: the project warns that features may be incomplete and things may break. You also need to extract the game data from a legally owned North American PS1 copy; the recomp does not supply the original game.
What MediEvil Recomp is—and what it is not
MediEvil Recomp is a PC project that reworks the original PlayStation game for modern display and rendering options. It is not a new MediEvil game, and it is not a substitute for owning and supplying the original game data.

The project’s releases page labels version 0.1b an open beta, not a full release. Its README cautions that features may not be fully functional and that things can break. That status applies to the documented beta; later releases may change it.

GamesRadar+ reports that the beta offers several options intended to alter the original game’s presentation and performance. The feature list is reported coverage, not a guarantee that every option is stable in the beta.
#1 Best Overall
- Re-live the original adventure on PlayStation 4
- Step into the bones of Sir Daniel Fortesque, a slightly-inept (and long dead) knight accidentally resurrected by his greatest enemy, the evil sorcerer Zarok
- With a second chance to foil his greatest foe, Dan will once again set out to save the kingdom of Gallowmere and earn his place as a true hero
- Display: widescreen support and aspect-ratio scaling.
- Rendering: increased draw distance, PGXP, and Better Terrain.
- Motion and performance: increased frame-rate support and frame interpolation.
These options give players a choice between the original game’s presentation and a more modern-looking or smoother experience. Neither is inherently the “right” way to play; the recomp is explicitly still in beta.
Does MediEvil Recomp use AI?
BlackLabelHQ’s README says: “This Recomp was made by human hands, no AI is involved in writing this code!” The project also says it will close pull requests made with AI, a policy GamesRadar+ reported as “we value human work; PRs made with AI will be closed.”
Rank #2
- Levels - 19 levels and gameplay locations that take place in Gallowmere. A fully functional Carnival zone featuring multi-level fairground style mini-games, offering hours of gameplay, and opportunities to earn gold to fund Dan's core quest.
- A multifunctional crypt room to new combat moves. The crypt features a gameplay manual, journal, a bestiary book and an artifact book, all of which are automatically updated with information as Dan's quest evolves.
- Mini-Games - 8 mini-games with more than 70 challenges divided among single-player gameplay and wireless multi-player connectivity via ad-hoc mode
- Combat Moves & Weapons - Have access to 20 weapons and an enriched combat & shielding system complete with over 100 moves and multiple combos that can be used
Those are the maintainers’ stated policy and description of their work, not an independent audit of every contributor’s development process. They do, however, make the project’s position on AI-written code clear.
What Jay Wilson said about AI and MediEvil
GamesRadar+ identifies Jay Wilson, also known as Jay Gunn, as MediEvil’s co-creator and lead designer, and reports his reaction: “I have no idea about what this is other than what I see posted here. But I agree with what the comments are saying – keep GenAI the fuck away from MediEvil… now and in the future! The charm of those days of dev’ was that everything was handmade with barely any premade tools or shortcuts.”

Wilson explicitly said he knew about the recomp only from what he had seen posted. His comment is an opinion about generative AI and the game’s handmade spirit—not a technical assessment, review, or endorsement of this PC project.
What you need to play it on PC
The project README requires a legally owned copy of the North American PlayStation version of MediEvil, from which you must rip the game data. It lists BIN/CUE and CHD formats. The project does not provide the original game files, and a disc by itself is not a ready-made PC port.

- New characters and New challenging puzzles
- Analog Control
- Vibration Function
- Rated T for Teen
Before setting up the beta, check the project README for the current extraction guidance and release notes. Because this is unfinished software, expect possible bugs or incomplete features rather than the predictability of the released console game.

If you want to preserve the original presentation and prefer the established console release, play the PS1 version. If you want PC display and rendering options such as widescreen or increased draw distance, the recomp may appeal—provided you have the required source copy and accept beta instability. The choice is about presentation and tolerance for unfinished software, not a claim that one version is objectively better.
