Kawaiintu OS is presented by its project as a custom Ubuntu distribution with Python-driven GTK4/libadwaita theming and nine color themes. But the available project description does not establish which MIME types receive custom icons, how those mappings are implemented, or whether every GTK4/libadwaita app displays them. Treat “exhaustive” as a claim to verify in the running system, not as proof of universal coverage.
What the Kawaiintu OS claim establishes—and what it does not
A DEV Community listing attributes “Building Kawaiintu OS: Exhaustive MIME-type Icon Mapping on Native GTK4/libadwaita” to Jpn Mif and gives a September 23 listing date. The listing does not expose the article body. The Kawaiintu OS project repository describes the distribution as a custom Ubuntu system and says it uses Python-driven GTK4/libadwaita theming with nine color themes. Those are project descriptions, not independent verification of the icon mappings or their behavior.

The available material does not establish the exact MIME types, icon names, mapping files, inheritance or fallback rules, or the range of applications that consume the mappings. It therefore cannot support a claim that every MIME type—or every GTK4/libadwaita application—uses a custom icon.
Why GTK3 file-manager examples do not prove GTK4 coverage
A separate community discussion describes custom MIME icons appearing in Thunar and Nemo and identifies those file managers as GTK3 applications. That may help explain why users ask which file manager displays a mapping, but it is a different implementation context from the GTK4/libadwaita context named in the Kawaiintu OS article listing.

An icon visible in one file manager is evidence for that application and setup only. To establish broader support, check the same file type in the actual GTK4/libadwaita applications you care about rather than inferring coverage from a GTK3 example.
How to try the live environment and check icons
The Kawaiintu OS repository says its ISO can be written to a USB drive and booted in UEFI mode, and that the ISO includes a live environment. Installation is optional for this check. If you do not already have suitable boot media, a USB flash drive is the optional item needed to write and boot the image; the project description does not specify a capacity.

- Get the ISO from the Kawaiintu OS project. Use the project’s own current instructions for obtaining the image.
- Write the image to USB media. Use a disk-imaging tool and follow its instructions; writing an image can erase existing contents on the selected drive, so confirm the target before proceeding.
- Boot the USB in UEFI mode. The project documents UEFI boot for trying the environment. Choose the live session rather than installing if you only want to inspect it.
- Choose representative files. Include common types and any less common types important to your workflow. Do not assume that a filename extension alone proves which MIME type the system assigned.
- Inspect more than one relevant application. Check the file manager and the GTK4/libadwaita apps you intend to use. Record the file, the application, and whether the displayed icon is custom, generic, or missing.
- Check an unmapped or unfamiliar type. Observe what the system displays, but do not infer the fallback rule for all applications from one result.
This process can confirm what appears in the tested live session. It cannot, by itself, establish that every MIME type is mapped or that applications outside the tested set behave the same way.

A defensible coverage claim needs a defined scope: which MIME types were considered, what counts as a mapped icon, and which applications and environment were checked. It also needs to distinguish a mapping being present from an application actually displaying that icon. The material available for the project does not provide those details, so a MIME-by-MIME inventory or universal GTK4 compatibility claim would go beyond what is established.

The project FAQ says its custom theming is “completely non-destructive” and “gracefully falls back to default libadwaita if disabled.” This is the maintainers’ characterization; it is not independent confirmation of how MIME icon mappings behave when theming is disabled or when an icon is unavailable.
