Kaspersky Volume Shadow Copy Service Bridge is not a standard Windows component name that can be mapped confidently to one executable or one Kaspersky product from public documentation. The safest interpretation is that it is a Kaspersky-installed service or helper that can interact with Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), the Windows framework used to make point-in-time copies while applications keep running. Its exact file, purpose, and disable procedure depend on the Kaspersky product and version installed on your PC.
Do not delete its files or stop the service solely because the name looks unfamiliar. First identify the service name, executable path, digital signer, installed Kaspersky edition, and whether backups or snapshot-based operations are active. Those checks tell you whether the entry is a legitimate Kaspersky component, an orphaned installation, or something that only imitates a Kaspersky-sounding name.

What the name means—and what it does not prove
Windows VSS is a platform, not an antivirus product. Microsoft describes it as a set of COM APIs that lets backup applications create consistent volume backups while programs continue writing to disk. A complete VSS solution contains four roles: the VSS service, a requester that asks for a snapshot, writers supplied by applications such as databases, and a provider that creates and maintains the shadow copy. The service coordinates them, briefly freezes write activity, creates the copy, and releases applications to continue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA label containing “Kaspersky,” “Volume Shadow Copy,” and “Bridge” therefore suggests an integration layer, but the label alone does not identify the binary or its job. Authoritative public results do not establish a universal executable name, installation path, service name, version range, or supported way to disable an item with this exact display name. Two computers can show similar wording while running different Kaspersky products.

How Kaspersky is known to use shadow copies
Kaspersky Security Center 14.2 documentation describes a utility named klbackup. The manual says that, during a backup, klbackup creates a disk shadow copy and simultaneously copies the Administration Server database; after that operation, the Administration Server becomes connectable again. This demonstrates a Kaspersky backup use of Windows shadow-copy technology, but it does not prove that klbackup is the same component as an entry displayed as “Kaspersky Volume Shadow Copy Service Bridge.”
The Kaspersky Security Center 14.2 manual is available as a PDF at Kaspersky Security Center 14.2 documentation. Your computer could instead contain a consumer security product, an endpoint product, a management agent, or a remnant from an older installation. Match the local product and version before relying on any example from that manual.

Why a bridge component might run
A VSS integration helper can be present for several legitimate reasons. A Kaspersky product may need a consistent snapshot before backing up a database, restoring protected files, or coordinating a management-server operation. A bridge can also be activated only when a job starts, so a service may appear installed but spend most of its time idle. Conversely, an old component can remain after a product upgrade or incomplete removal.
These possibilities look similar in Task Manager. High CPU, disk activity, or repeated VSS errors do not identify the cause by themselves. Windows backup software, database writers, storage providers, and security products can all participate in the same VSS transaction. Treat the display name as a clue, not as proof of ownership or behavior.

- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Look for entries whose Display name, Description, or Path to executable contains Kaspersky, shadow, volume, backup, or a related product name. Record the exact service name, current status, startup type, and executable path.
- Open the service’s Properties dialog and read the Log On account and Dependencies tab. A dependency on the Windows VSS service or another provider is useful context, but it does not establish that the file is genuine.
- In PowerShell, run this read-only query:
Get-CimInstance Win32_Service | Where-Object {$_.DisplayName -match 'Kaspersky|Shadow|Volume|Backup' -or $_.PathName -match 'Kaspersky'} | Select-Object Name,DisplayName,State,StartMode,PathName
Copy the complete PathName, including any command-line arguments. Arguments can reveal a product directory or a mode that is not visible in the display name. If the query returns nothing, the wording may belong to a driver, scheduled task, tray application, or a security product’s internal status page rather than a Windows service.

A legitimate installation should normally reside under a Kaspersky program directory or another path created by the product installer, and its executable should carry a valid digital signature from the expected publisher. Neither condition alone is conclusive: malware can use a plausible folder name, and a damaged or outdated file can lose a signature.
- In File Explorer, open the path recorded from the service properties. Do not run an unknown file manually.
- Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. Check the signer, signature status, and certificate details.
- For a scripted check, use PowerShell with the actual path:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath 'C:ull
amerom he
egistry.exe'
- Compare the file’s creation or modification date with the installation and upgrade history shown in the Kaspersky application. A file in a temporary folder, a user-profile download directory, or an unrelated vendor folder deserves additional investigation.
- Do not replace, rename, or quarantine the file based only on an unfamiliar name. Submit a suspicious unsigned file to your organization’s security process or Kaspersky support while preserving the path and signature results.
Identify which Kaspersky product installed it
Open the installed Kaspersky application and note its exact product name, edition, and version. On managed computers, check the endpoint or management console rather than assuming the local tray icon represents the whole installation. Also review Settings, About, and the Windows list of installed apps for older Kaspersky entries.
Record whether the machine is a personal PC, a file server, or a Kaspersky Security Center administration server. The klbackup evidence applies specifically to Kaspersky Security Center 14.2 documentation; it should not be generalized to every Kaspersky consumer or endpoint product. If no installed product matches the service path, look for an incomplete uninstall, a restored system image, or a renamed file before making changes.
Determine whether VSS is currently involved
First establish whether Windows itself is healthy. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
vssadmin list writers
Every writer should normally report a stable state with no error. You can also list providers:

vssadmin list providers
Use Event Viewer to correlate timestamps: open eventvwr.msc, inspect the Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System logs, and filter for sources such as VSS and Volsnap. Look for events at the same time as a Kaspersky backup, scan, restore, or management task. A VSS event without a matching Kaspersky operation may belong to Windows Backup, a database application, or another backup agent.
Document the operation that was running, the event ID, the affected volume, and the writer name. Avoid treating a generic “shadow copy” error as evidence that the bridge itself is defective; VSS failures often originate in a writer timeout, insufficient storage, provider conflict, or a service that was stopped independently.
Should you disable the bridge?
There is no evidence-based universal answer. Disabling an unknown VSS integration can stop a backup or restore workflow even if antivirus scanning continues normally. It can also leave a management server unable to produce a consistent database copy. Use the following decision points before changing startup behavior.
| Situation | Safer action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized Kaspersky product, valid signature, and active backups | Leave it enabled and troubleshoot the specific job. | Stopping it may break snapshot-based backup or restore operations. |
| Recognized product, but no backup feature is used | Check the product’s own settings or support guidance before disabling. | The component may serve another security or management workflow. |
| Unsigned file or path unrelated to Kaspersky | Isolate the finding through your security process; do not simply delete it. | The name could be spoofed or left by another application. |
| Orphaned entry after an uninstall | Run the official product uninstaller or vendor cleanup procedure. | Manual deletion can leave services, drivers, and registry entries inconsistent. |
If you must test the effect, create a current, independently verified backup first, record the original startup type, stop only during a maintenance window, and immediately test the workflows that matter: backup, restore, scheduled scans, updates, and management-console health. Restore the original setting if any operation fails. Do not disable the Windows VSS service itself as a first experiment; other applications may depend on it.

The service fails to start
Check the executable path and signature, then inspect the Service Control Manager and VSS events at the failure time. Confirm that required Windows services are running and that the system volume has free space for shadow-copy storage. If the Kaspersky application reports a damaged installation, use its repair or reinstall option rather than copying a replacement executable from the internet.
Backups fail with a VSS writer error
Record the named writer and event ID. Restarting a writer’s associated application may clear a transient state, but on a server follow the application vendor’s recovery procedure. Do not repeatedly restart database or system services on a production machine without a maintenance plan. If failures began immediately after a Kaspersky upgrade, capture the product version, Windows build, logs, and exact error text for Kaspersky support.

VSS reports provider or snapshot-space errors
Check which provider is listed by vssadmin list providers and whether the affected volume has adequate free space and shadow-copy storage allocation. A provider conflict can involve storage software, backup agents, or disk filters unrelated to Kaspersky. Change one variable at a time and retest so the responsible component remains identifiable.

The entry remains after uninstalling Kaspersky
Confirm that no Kaspersky product or management agent is still installed, reboot, and check the service list again. Use only the official uninstaller or documented cleanup utility for the exact product and version. If a service points to a missing file, preserve the service name and registry details before removing anything; those details help support determine whether the entry is an obsolete remnant.
Security checks when the name looks suspicious
- Verify the executable’s full path and Authenticode status.
- Check whether the file is loaded by the service listed in the registry, not merely referenced by a shortcut or task.
- Review recent software installations, browser downloads, and email attachments if the file is unsigned or newly created.
- Run a full scan with your installed security product and keep the system updated.
- On a work-managed device, send the evidence to IT before stopping the service.
A genuine Kaspersky component can still be broken, outdated, or orphaned; a suspicious component can also use a familiar display name. Ownership and behavior must be established from the binary, signature, product installation, and event correlation together.
What to include in a support request
Support can identify the component much faster when the request includes the exact display name and service name, executable path, file hash if permitted by your policy, digital-signature result, Kaspersky product and version, Windows edition and build, startup type, relevant VSS or Volsnap event IDs, and the operation being attempted. State whether the issue is a startup failure, high resource use, a backup error, or a concern about legitimacy. Do not include passwords, license keys, private database contents, or personal files.
Bottom line
The name “Kaspersky Volume Shadow Copy Service Bridge” points to a possible Kaspersky integration with Windows VSS, but public documentation does not establish one universal component behind that exact label. Windows VSS itself is a normal snapshot framework, and Kaspersky Security Center 14.2 documents shadow-copy use through klbackup; that evidence is not a definitive identity match. Verify the local service, path, signer, product version, and event context before changing anything. Keep the component enabled when it supports an active backup or restore workflow, and use the product’s official repair, uninstall, or support channel for unsigned, orphaned, or failing installations.
