The range is a projection, not a finalized or independently audited figure. At that point, 177 of 217 declared drought-hit taluks had been assessed, with the second memorandum to the Centre recording about ₹46,000 crore in losses.
What the ₹50,000–₹60,000 crore estimate covers
Parameshwara said the consolidated estimate could rise as assessments in the remaining declared drought-hit taluks are completed. The October 3 report attributes the projected range to his remarks to reporters; it does not present a final state total. The reported ₹46,000 crore in the second memorandum covers the 177 taluks assessed at that stage, not all taluks in Karnataka.

A September 2026 report gave a more precise interim figure: ₹46,324.5 crore in assessed losses across nearly 47.09 lakh hectares in those 177 taluks. It also reported that the estimated area of Kharif 2026 crop loss could exceed 55 lakh hectares as assessments continued. These are state-reported assessments relayed in news coverage, not an independent audit. The rounded October figure and the more precise September figure describe dated interim reporting, not conflicting final totals. The October 3 report and September report provide the respective figures.
How many taluks are affected, and what remains to be assessed?
As of the October 3 report, 217 taluks had been declared drought-hit. Assessments were complete in 177, while work was under way in the other 40, which had been added to the declared list on October 1. The state said a third and final memorandum would be submitted after the remaining assessments and Central inspections.

A separate group of 22 taluks had not been declared drought-hit and was due to undergo ground-truthing. They should not be counted among the 217 declared taluks or treated as already assessed drought-hit areas. The report noted that some coastal taluks did not appear to face the same conditions. These groups describe different stages of the assessment process, not 240 confirmed drought-hit taluks.
Why recent rain may not change the crop-loss estimate
Parameshwara said recent rain could help drinking-water availability but was unlikely to significantly benefit crops. He said the drought situation would not be determined solely by recent rainfall, and that Central teams would be briefed on conditions from May through September. The state’s explanation separates possible short-term water relief from crop damage attributed to earlier conditions.

Rainfall figures reported during the season are snapshots, not final totals. For example, Public TV reported that Karnataka received 465 mm against a normal 666 mm between June 1 and August 26, 2026, a 30% deficit. That dated period should not be read as a statewide final-season rainfall figure. Public TV’s August briefing described the staged assessment and declaration process.

In September, Karnataka sought ₹7,142.64 crore under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) norms through two phases. The request comprised ₹4,998.60 crore for input subsidy and ₹2,144.04 crore for measures including fodder and drinking-water supply. These amounts are requests for relief support, not estimates of total crop or economic losses, and should not be added to the loss estimate. The September report on the request gives the breakdown.

How the 2026 estimate compares with Karnataka’s 2023 drought
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) reported that all 31 Karnataka districts were declared drought-affected in 2023. Its 2025 performance audit records a state-estimated crop loss of ₹65,594.92 crore, based on memoranda submitted by the state to the Government of India. That is a historical state estimate documented in an audit, not a recalculation by the CAG and not part of the 2026 projection. The CAG performance audit also describes drought management as covering assessment and monitoring, declaration and prioritization, and the development and implementation of management strategies. It assigns primary responsibility to state governments, with the Centre supplementing their efforts and providing additional resources.
