But Marx was not simply for banning every form of children’s work. He argued for age-based limits and education alongside some productive activity—a position shaped by nineteenth-century industry and still worth examining critically.
What does “Karl Marx Was for the Children” mean?
In a September 30, 2026 essay, Sam Fluss argues that Marx’s tenderness toward children and his political criticism of child exploitation reflected a shared concern: children should be able to grow, learn, and live freely, rather than be treated as cheap labor. Fluss connects Marx’s family life with his writing on factory work and education in Capital and elsewhere. Read Fluss’s essay in Jacobin.
The connection is an interpretation, not proof that Marx’s private conduct always matched his politics. Fluss also notes that Marx held patriarchal and racist views, complicating any portrait of him as a person who consistently embodied the equality implied by his political thought.
What do the accounts of Marx’s family life show?
Fluss describes Marx as a devoted father and grandfather. Marx and Jenny had seven children, three of whom survived into adulthood. Their son Edgar’s death was a profound loss; Fluss recounts Marx’s letter to Friedrich Engels after it. The family also faced financial strain, while Marx’s daughters received an education.

Wilhelm Liebknecht, Marx’s contemporary and associate, recalled him playing with his daughters and grandson Johnny and showing sympathy to poor children. Liebknecht wrote, “For Marx, the society of children was a necessity – he recovered and refreshed himself thereby.” His memoir, published in 1896, offers valuable first-person recollections, but it is retrospective testimony, not independent verification of every episode. Read Liebknecht’s memoir.
Was Karl Marx against child labor?
Marx condemned the exploitation of children in nineteenth-century British factories, mines, and workshops. As Fluss presents his argument in Capital, the harm was not only dangerous conditions and long hours. Work could also displace play, health, schooling, and children’s intellectual and emotional development.

His position was not a blanket call to prohibit all work by children. In instructions for delegates to the First International’s Geneva Congress in 1866, Marx treated children’s participation in modern industry as a potentially progressive development distorted under capitalist conditions. He proposed limits on working time according to age and linked productive activity with education. That distinction is important—and controversial: recognizing a possible educational role for productive activity is not the same as endorsing the exploitative labor Marx criticized, but it does leave open questions about what work is suitable and who safeguards children.
What did Marx think children’s education should include?
In Fluss’s account, Marx’s idea of education extended beyond classroom lessons. It combined intellectual education, physical education, and technological training, with productive activity constrained by age and joined to learning. This was a nineteenth-century political proposal, not a statement of present-day education policy.

Fluss also highlights Marx’s distinction between setting public rules and inspecting compliance, on the one hand, and having the state or church act as educator, on the other. The point is that protecting children through public standards did not, in Marx’s formulation, require handing their education wholesale to those institutions.

Child labor remains a global concern, though modern estimates should not be mistaken for a count of the same historical industries Marx described. The International Labour Organization and UNICEF estimated that nearly 138 million children were in child labor worldwide in 2024, including 54 million in hazardous work. The joint estimates were published on June 11, 2025; these are estimates for 2024, not a 2026 count. See the ILO and UNICEF figures.

The ILO says the joint estimates draw on 107 national household surveys, covering 60 percent of the global population of children aged 5 to 17 through those surveys. Its definition concerns work children are too young to perform and/or work likely to harm their health, safety, or morals. These are modeled global estimates grounded in survey data, not a direct census of every child. Read the ILO methodology FAQ.
