For four women delivering food and parcels in Karachi, motorcycle work is both a way to earn and a way to claim independence. Their stories show what that choice can involve: family responsibilities, long hours in heavy traffic, public scrutiny and concern about safety. They are individual accounts, not a portrait of every woman rider in the city.
Four routes into delivery work
The feature follows Mehak Baloch, Rubab Jubani, Sana Urooj and Kiran Fateh, who are challenging the perception that delivery work belongs to men. Their circumstances differ, but each is presented as making a place for herself on Karachi’s roads.

Mehak Baloch: earning for her children
Baloch was 32 at the time of the feature. After her husband died of a terminal illness, she began delivery work to support their four children. She describes an early period of insecurity when she dressed and presented herself as a man to go to work. Over time, she says, she became more confident. Her measure of the work is personal: “Nothing can give me the happiness I get from providing for my four children independently.”
Sana Urooj: starting again after divorce
Urooj says she took up delivery work after divorce left her raising two children. Seeing an interview with fellow rider Rubab Jubani inspired her to pursue it.

Rubab Jubani: an example for another rider
The feature says Jubani has been riding for deliveries since 2019. Her story reached Urooj and helped make the work seem possible to someone facing her own family responsibilities.
Kiran Fateh
Fateh is also among the four women featured. The available account does not give further personal details about her, so her inclusion should not be mistaken for a fuller biography.
What the work asks of them
The riders’ accounts describe more than the act of riding. Baloch identifies traffic and the time spent on the road as especially difficult. The feature also points to long working hours and the challenge of fitting delivery shifts around parenting and care responsibilities.

Public reactions are another part of the job. Women riders attract stares and negative comments, according to the feature. Jubani’s father supported her wish to ride, but worried about how people would react and about Karachi’s security situation. Support at home and confidence on the road do not erase scrutiny in public.
Safety is managed, not guaranteed
Urooj says male colleagues advise women about areas to avoid, and that the company blocks orders for some areas to reduce risk. She describes the arrangement this way: “Our male colleagues guide us by telling us which areas to avoid for deliveries, and our company also doesn’t allow us to take orders for certain areas to avoid any mishaps.”
The four women said they had not experienced street crime while delivering at the time of the report. That is a time-bound account of these riders’ experiences, not evidence that delivery work is generally safe or free from risk.

Karachi’s wider mobility barriers
The experiences sit within a wider debate about who can travel independently in the city. A 2023 study by Sana Iqbal and Andree Woodcock examined mobility barriers facing early-career workers in Karachi. It used purposive focus groups with six women and six men aged 21–35 who had current or previous public-transport experience and were from middle-income backgrounds; it was not a study of delivery riders.

The paper also discusses transport-related safety concerns and stigma around women’s presence in public space. In its focus groups, women were more enthusiastic than male participants about women riding motorcycles; some men raised concerns that riding could expose women to trouble.
In those focus groups, 77% of women and 83% of men said limited public-transport coverage made it difficult to reach destinations. The paper also reports that 33% of male focus-group participants supported women’s solo motorcycle riding and independent travel. These are responses within a small study sample, not estimates of opinion across Karachi.

A 2025 Shirkat Gah/WLUML report, Riding to Freedom, presents a separate set of survey responses about two-wheeler mobility in Pakistan. Among its respondents, 92.7% thought bicycles, scooters or motorcycles would positively affect women’s lives; 75.6% identified fear of harassment as a major reason women are discouraged from riding; 70.7% cited lack of family support; 69.3% said harassment concerns strongly influenced women’s access to public space; and 95.1% agreed that infrastructure such as cycle tracks or bicycle lanes was lacking. These percentages describe that report’s respondents; they should not be read as nationally representative without the report’s full sampling context.

The 2025 report names Pink Riders, a Karachi motorcycle-training initiative, as one effort associated with making women’s riding more visible. Readers interested in instruction should check the initiative directly for current services and availability; the report does not establish what is currently offered.

Its participants were passengers, not the delivery riders profiled here, and it does not identify a particular helmet model or brand. The practical point is limited but important: wearing a helmet is a relevant safety consideration for anyone riding a motorcycle.

A distinct story within a broader shift
In a separate 2024 AFP profile published by Dawn, Karachi motorbike ride-hailing worker Amina Sohail described continuing through stares and hooting while working to help her family. Her occupation is different from food and parcel delivery, but the account offers another example of women entering paid work on two wheels amid social pressure and financial need. It should not be conflated with the four delivery riders’ experiences.
Together, these stories show both the promise and the limits of independence through motorcycle work. A rider may gain income and control over how she moves through the city while still negotiating family expectations, road conditions, public judgement and safety risks. The four women’s accounts make that tension visible without claiming that one path—or one experience—stands for all women in Karachi.
