You are generally comparing two ways to reach the same underlying markets, not two independent sources of truth. Kalshi’s rules and its named official data source determine the result. The practical differences are the fee information shown, funding workflow, interface, order-book presentation, and whether you are eligible to trade.
What you are actually comparing
Coinbase’s prediction-market product is not a separate settlement venue competing with Kalshi. Coinbase states that its prediction markets are operated by Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated exchange. Kalshi supplies the contract market, matching and settlement process; Coinbase supplies an access layer inside its own account experience.

That distinction answers the most common question—“Is Coinbase prediction markets the same as Kalshi?”—with a qualified yes. The contract market is Kalshi-operated, but the account, interface and order-confirmation experience can differ. Coinbase cannot choose a winner or manually change an outcome. The contract’s written rules, including the specified source, timing and conditions, control the determination.

How fees differ—and why there is no universal winner
Kalshi’s fee model
Kalshi’s April 19, 2026 fee guidance says its transaction fee is based on expected contract earnings. That is different from assuming a single percentage of every order’s face value. The schedule can vary by market, and Kalshi notes that special events may use different fees.
Kalshi also distinguishes between ordinary orders and resting orders that provide liquidity. A maker fee can apply when a resting order executes. Canceling a resting order does not incur a fee under that guidance. Whether an order is immediately matched or waits in the book therefore matters when you estimate the all-in cost.
Coinbase’s fee disclosure
Coinbase does not state one universal prediction-market rate in the cited introduction. Instead, it says the order-confirmation page displays a fee breakdown. Treat that screen as the authoritative quote for the exact order you are about to submit.
Read the preview whether you are opening a position, adding to one, or removing it. The applicable market, side, order type and current matching conditions can change the amount shown. Record the quoted fee and total before confirming rather than applying a rate copied from another market or an older example.
A practical all-in comparison
- Open the identical contract on both eligible interfaces. Confirm that the event wording, side and expiration are the same.
- Enter the same quantity and price assumption. Do not compare a filled market order with an unfilled resting order.
- Inspect the live spread and available size. A wider spread or partial fill can cost more than a small difference in the published fee.
- Read Coinbase’s order-confirmation breakdown or apply the current Kalshi schedule for the corresponding order.
- Include position changes. If you are removing or reducing an existing position, check the fee shown for that action instead of reusing the opening-order estimate.
The cheaper route is the one with the lower total cost for your actual order after fees, spread and execution are considered. A headline fee comparison without the market name, order type and date is not reliable.

How contracts settle
The contract rules come first
Every event contract names the source, measurement window, timing and conditions used to determine the result. The interface’s current price is not the settlement oracle. For Coinbase users especially, a Coinbase spot price or an app display cannot replace the source written into the Kalshi contract.
Kalshi’s markets team finalizes the result after the official outcome is confirmed. Coinbase states that Kalshi determines the final result and that Coinbase cannot manually override it.

Examples of official sources
- Crypto prices: Coinbase’s examples use the CF Benchmarks Real Time Index (BRTI), not an arbitrary spot quote shown elsewhere in the app.
- Sports: NBA, NFL and MLB contracts use official league results.
- Weather: Weather markets use National Weather Service data.
- Political and economic events: The contract identifies the applicable official result, which can vary from one market to another.
These examples are categories, not substitutes for reading the specific contract. Two markets that look similar can use different timestamps, agencies or confirmation conditions.
Market close, determination and cash settlement are separate moments
A displayed close time tells you when trading is scheduled to stop; it does not necessarily tell you when the result will be determined or when the account will show the settled value. Kalshi specifically notes that a market’s displayed close time can differ from its determination time.
After the event, the named source must publish or confirm the relevant information. Kalshi then finalizes the result. Kalshi says most markets settle within a few hours, often around three, after official confirmation. A delay is possible when an agency has not released finalized data, issues a revision, or requires additional verification. “Three hours” is therefore a typical estimate, not a guaranteed service-level deadline.
Check settlement terms before placing an order
- Open the contract rules. Locate the exact source, observation period, cutoff and determination conditions.
- Write down the source name. For example, note BRTI, an official league result or the National Weather Service when that is what the contract specifies.
- Compare the listed close and determination information. Do not assume the trading cutoff is the publication time for the official result.
- Plan for revisions. If the source can revise or finalize data later, allow for a settlement delay after the event appears to be over.
Where you can use each service
Coinbase eligibility
Coinbase’s help guidance says: “Prediction markets are available to U.S. residents only, excluding Nevada and Michigan.” That is a product-specific geographic rule, not a statement that every Coinbase feature has the same footprint.
The same guidance says traveling abroad does not affect access for an eligible U.S. resident. Regional or regulatory conditions can still affect trading, so an account that is eligible at home may encounter a restriction while a particular service checks location or market availability.
Kalshi eligibility
Kalshi’s help center says, “Kalshi is now accessible internationally,” while its Member Agreement still restricts some jurisdictions. The complete restricted-country list is maintained in Section VI of that agreement and can change. Do not infer eligibility from a country that is not mentioned in a third-party list; use Kalshi’s live sign-up check and the current agreement.
Geography checklist
- Confirm that you are a U.S. resident and not in Nevada or Michigan if you plan to use Coinbase prediction markets.
- If you are outside the United States, check Kalshi’s current sign-up eligibility and Section VI of its Member Agreement.
- Recheck access when you move or travel, because regional and regulatory controls can change.
- Do not assume that access to the app or an existing account automatically grants access to prediction markets.
Trading hours are not settlement hours
Coinbase lists prediction-market access as 24/7 except for a Thursday maintenance window from 3 to 5 a.m. Eastern Time, with additional operational or regional restrictions possible. That schedule concerns the ability to access or trade the product; it does not promise that an event will be determined during those hours.
For either route, the market listing’s close time, the source agency’s publication time and Kalshi’s finalization step can all be different. A contract can stop accepting orders while the official statistic is still pending, or remain unsettled while a source reviews its data.

Execution, order books and liquidity
Kalshi describes maker-and-taker matching between participants. In practical terms, the price you see is only part of execution quality. The available quantity at that price, the bid-ask spread and the likelihood of a partial fill affect your result.
Coinbase’s interface may present the same underlying market through a different account and order-entry flow. Before submitting, compare the displayed order book and spread for the exact contract. If one screen shows less size at the price you want, a nominally identical fee can still produce a higher total cost because you cross a wider spread or receive multiple fills.
Questions to ask about a live quote
- Is the displayed price a bid, an offer or an indicative midpoint?
- How much quantity is available at that price?
- Would a marketable order consume several price levels?
- Would a resting order be treated as a maker order if it executes?
- What fee and total does the confirmation screen show?
These checks matter more than choosing a service based solely on the name in the app menu. The underlying contract may be the same, but your fill can differ with timing and available liquidity.

Use Coinbase when its eligibility and workflow fit
Coinbase can be the practical choice for an eligible U.S. resident who prefers its account interface and wants the fee breakdown shown immediately before confirmation. Nevada and Michigan residents are excluded from the stated prediction-market scope, and non-U.S. residents do not meet the stated eligibility rule.

Use direct Kalshi access when you need broader stated geography or its native tools
Kalshi is the underlying exchange and states that it is accessible internationally, subject to restricted jurisdictions. Direct access can also make Kalshi’s own fee schedule, market rules and participant order book the primary reference. International availability is not unconditional; verify your jurisdiction before funding or trading.

Use the market, not the brand, as the final decision point
- Verify eligibility. Complete the applicable sign-up or regional check before planning a trade.
- Read the contract rules. Identify the official source, cutoff, determination conditions and any special fee note.
- Compare the live book. Check spread, available size and expected fill on the route you intend to use.
- Compare all-in cost. Use Coinbase’s confirmation breakdown or Kalshi’s current market-specific schedule, including any maker treatment.
- Confirm timing. Note the close time and understand that official determination and settlement can come later.
- Keep the source in view. Follow the named benchmark, league, agency or official result—not a different number displayed by an app.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Coinbase decides the winner
It does not. Kalshi applies the contract rules and finalizes the official outcome. A Coinbase interface cannot manually override that decision.
Comparing a published fee with a final fill
A schedule or headline rate omits spread, order type, market-specific charges and partial fills. Compare the total for the exact order immediately before submission.
Treating a close time as a settlement deadline
Close, determination and settlement can occur at different times. Allow for the official source to publish finalized or revised data and for Kalshi’s markets team to finalize the result.
Assuming international access has no exceptions
Kalshi’s international statement is qualified by restricted jurisdictions in its Member Agreement. Coinbase’s stated scope is U.S. residents except Nevada and Michigan. Check the live eligibility controls rather than relying on an old country list.
Using the wrong reference price or result
A crypto contract may use BRTI, a sports contract an official league result, and a weather contract National Weather Service data. The source named in the rules controls even when another number appears more prominently in an app.
Bottom line
Kalshi and Coinbase prediction markets lead to Kalshi-operated contracts, so neither route has a separate winner or settlement oracle. Choose the interface for which you are eligible and comfortable funding, then make the decision at the individual-market level: read the named source and timing rules, inspect the live order book, and compare the exact all-in fee shown for your order. Expect most markets to settle within a few hours—often about three after official confirmation—but treat that as a typical timeframe, not a guarantee.
