In Kali GNOME, Prnt Scrn captures the screen immediately; use Alt + Prnt Scrn for the focused window and Shift + Prnt Scrn for a selected area. Recording is different: Xfce uses Ctrl + Print Screen, while GNOME uses Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
The important first step is identifying whether your Kali session is Xfce or GNOME. Kali supports both, and the same physical key can open a chooser in one desktop and capture directly in another.

Print Screen, PrtSc, PrtScn and Prnt Scrn are different labels for the same keyboard function. Your key may require Fn on a laptop.
Which Kali desktop are you using?
Shortcut behavior follows the active desktop session, not simply the fact that the operating system is Kali Linux. Xfce and GNOME provide different screenshot interfaces. If pressing Print Screen opens a small screenshooter dialog that asks you to confirm, you are most likely in Xfce. If it immediately captures or opens GNOME’s screenshot overlay, you are in GNOME.
#1 Best Overall
Kali lets you select a desktop environment when configuring or signing in to the system. Check the session choice on your login screen if you installed more than one environment. Do not assume that a shortcut found for one session will behave identically in the other.
Taking screenshots in Kali Xfce
Capture the entire screen
- Press
Print Screen. This launches the Xfce screenshooter. - Press
Enterto take the screenshot, as documented in the Kali Xfce FAQ. - Use the screenshooter’s save controls to choose a filename and destination if it does not use your preferred defaults.
The Xfce shortcut opens a chooser rather than acting as a single-purpose “capture everything” key. That extra step is useful when you need to switch between full-screen, window and rectangular-area modes.
Capture one window or a rectangular area
- Press
Print Screento open the screenshooter. - Select the window or area mode in the dialog.
- For an area capture, drag across the region you want. For a window capture, select the target window.
- Press
Enterto confirm, then save the image.
Because the chooser is part of the workflow, a failed first capture does not necessarily mean the key is broken: the application may simply be waiting for a mode selection or confirmation.
Start and stop a screen recording
- Press
Ctrl+Print Screen. Xfce launches its screen recorder. - Press
Enterto start recording. - Use the recorder’s on-screen controls or its documented stop action to finish.
A screenshot is a still image. A screen recording, also called a screencast, is a video sequence; use the recording shortcut only when you need motion, narration or a sequence of actions.

Taking screenshots in Kali GNOME
Full-screen capture
Press Prnt Scrn to capture the screen. GNOME may show its screenshot interface before final confirmation, depending on the version and current shell state.
Focused-window capture
Bring the desired window to the front, then press Alt + Prnt Scrn. This targets the focused window rather than the entire desktop.
Selected-area capture
Press Shift + Prnt Scrn, then select the rectangle to capture. This is the quickest GNOME shortcut when you need only part of a browser page, terminal or dialog.
Start or stop a screencast
Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R. The same combination toggles recording: press it again to stop. GNOME’s screencast is a video recording, not a still screenshot.

Using the GNOME screenshot overlay
If the GNOME overlay appears, its controls provide the same choices with visible prompts:
S: select an area.C: capture the entire screen.W: capture a window.P: toggle pointer visibility.V: switch between screenshot and screencast mode.Enter, Space orCtrl+C: capture after making your selection.
These overlay keys are helpful when you cannot remember the three direct GNOME combinations. They also let you decide whether the mouse pointer belongs in the image.
Why Print Screen behaves differently
The physical key is not the deciding factor; the desktop environment interprets it. Xfce’s documented behavior is to launch a screenshooter and wait for Enter. GNOME assigns separate combinations for the full screen, focused window and area, and can present an interactive overlay.
Keyboard labels vary by manufacturer. A compact laptop may print PrtSc in small text on another key, requiring Fn + that key. A keyboard without any Print Screen marking cannot use these exact shortcuts until you map another key or connect a keyboard that exposes the function.

Save locations, formats and privacy
Do not rely on a universal Kali screenshot folder. The official shortcut descriptions establish how to trigger a capture, but they do not specify one save directory for every Kali release, desktop session or configuration. Check the save dialog or your file manager immediately after capturing.
Before sharing an image, inspect it for passwords, API keys, private chat messages, IP addresses and browser tabs. Area capture is preferable to cropping later when sensitive material is visible around the subject. For recordings, remember that every window opened during the session may be included in the video.
Troubleshooting shortcut failures
Nothing happens when you press Print Screen
- Confirm which desktop session is active; Xfce and GNOME use different workflows.
- On a laptop, try
Fnwith the key markedPrtSc,PrtScnorPrnt Scrn. - Check that another application or custom keyboard mapping has not claimed the key.
- Use an external USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key if the built-in keyboard omits the function.
Xfce opens a dialog but does not save an image
Press Enter after selecting the desired mode. The Xfce shortcut launches the screenshooter; it is not complete until you confirm the capture. Then use the dialog’s save controls and verify the destination.
The wrong window is captured
Focus the target window before using GNOME’s Alt + Prnt Scrn. In Xfce, choose the window mode in the screenshooter and select the target explicitly.

Recording will not start
Use the shortcut for your desktop: Ctrl + Print Screen, then Enter in Xfce; Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R in GNOME. A still-image shortcut will not start a video.
The key is missing from a compact keyboard
This is a hardware limitation, not a Kali shortcut difference. Use the keyboard’s documented Fn layer if it has one, remap another key, or attach a USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a website rather than your Kali desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients tools for screenshots, page information and PDFs.

Choosing the right shortcut
- Use Xfce’s
Print Screenflow when you want one chooser for full-screen, window and area captures. - Use GNOME’s direct combinations when speed matters:
Prnt Scrnfor the screen,Alt+Prnt Scrnfor a window andShift+Prnt Scrnfor an area. - Use the recording shortcut only for video: Xfce’s
Ctrl+Print Screenor GNOME’sCtrl+Alt+Shift+R. - When a key appears inactive, check the desktop session and the keyboard’s
Fnlayer before changing system settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are PrtSc, PrtScn and Prnt Scrn different screenshot commands?
No. They are common labels for the same physical Print Screen function; the required key combination is determined by your Kali desktop environment.
Can these shortcuts capture a browser page longer than the visible screen?
The documented Kali shortcuts capture the desktop, a window or a selected region. They do not establish a browser-specific full-page capture mode.
Is a screen recording the same as a screenshot?
No. A screenshot is one still image; a screencast is a video recording started with the recording shortcut for your desktop.
