A Kahoot game PIN may no longer be enough to join: when the host enables 2-Step Join, players must also match a changing on-screen pattern. Kahoot also identifies CAPTCHA as a bot-prevention measure. That helps explain why methods built around entering a PIN and joining immediately can fail, though Kahoot does not publish the technical details of individual bot tools or its full detection system.
Why PIN-only joining may fail
With 2-Step Join enabled, a participant enters the game PIN and then taps or clicks four tiles to match the pattern on the host’s screen. Kahoot says the pattern refreshes about every 10 seconds and makes it harder for unwanted players and most bots to join. A method relying only on submitting a PIN may therefore stop at the additional check.

Kahoot also lists https://captcha.kahoot.it/ as a CAPTCHA endpoint used to prevent bots from joining games and help keep sessions safe. This establishes that CAPTCHA is part of Kahoot’s protections, but the company does not describe its implementation or detection logic in that guidance.

How hosts can reduce unwanted joins
Kahoot recommends several controls for games at risk of unwanted participants. They add friction and help hosts respond, but Kahoot does not promise that any setting will prevent every disruption.
Enable 2-Step Join
Turn on the additional join check before or during a live session if you are concerned that the PIN has been shared or unwanted players may appear. Players must match the pattern displayed on the host screen after entering the PIN. Kahoot’s instructions are in its 2-Step Join help article.

Use nickname generation
Enable the nickname generator to avoid arbitrary participant-entered names and make suspicious entries easier to spot. This changes how participants are named; it is not a substitute for checking the lobby.
Moderate the lobby and lock the game
Remove suspicious or inappropriate participants from the lobby before starting. If unwanted players appear, Kahoot’s Safety Guide advises using 2-Step Join; locking the game can restrict further access once appropriate for the session.

Kahoot’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits accessing its services by automated, unethical, or unconventional means and separately prohibits activity that disrupts or interferes with its services, servers, or networks. The Terms say users must use the services for intended and permitted purposes; a breach may result in account suspension or termination. What the documented controls do—and do not establish
| Control | What it changes | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Step Join | Adds a changing visual pattern after PIN entry; Kahoot says it refreshes about every 10 seconds. | Adds a step for legitimate participants as well as unwanted joiners. |
| Nickname generator | Replaces arbitrary participant-entered names with generated nicknames. | Reduces free-form naming but does not remove the need to monitor the lobby. |
| Lobby removal | Lets the host remove suspicious or inappropriate participants before the game starts. | Requires the host to notice and act on suspicious entries. |
| Game lock | Restricts further joining when the host locks the game. | Use it when the session is ready to stop accepting additional participants. |
Kahoot’s documentation describes these as practical safeguards, not guarantees, and does not provide comparative effectiveness ratings. Its network troubleshooting guidance, updated September 17, 2026, identifies CAPTCHA as a bot-prevention and session-safety measure without explaining how it works.
