The game behind the headline is K-POP Rising – Dream to Shine, a simulation and rhythm game from publisher Microids and developer Old Skull Games. It is scheduled for November 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The “ain’t it” verdict comes from Push Square’s Sammy Barker, dated October 8, 2026, and it is based on the gameplay trailer, not on a finished copy of the game.
What K-POP Rising – Dream to Shine is
K-POP Rising is an upcoming simulation and rhythm game. The official US product page lists its genre as simulation/rhythm game and its player count as one to three. As of October 9, 2026, the game has not launched, so everything below describes announced features and promotional material rather than a playable build.

What the publisher says the game includes
Microids describes a game built around building an idol act from the ground up. The announced features fall into three areas, each of which the critic’s reaction touches on in a different way.
Character creation and styling
Players create their own character and customize clothing and makeup. This is the customization focus the publisher leads with, and it is the part of the game that most directly fits the title’s premise of a player-built act.

- Shine Solo, Triumph as a Trio! Experience the adventure on your own or with two friends: form the group of your dreams and lead it to the very top of K-pop!
Forming a group and building a career
The game asks players to form a group and recruit members, then progress from bedroom practice to major stages. According to the October 8, 2026 announcement, players build a career alongside a character named Nova. The publisher’s description of the premise is a rise from aspiring performer to stardom, with a choice between a solo path and a group path.
Rhythm performances and social media
Rhythm sections involve singing and dance routines. The announcement says the trailer shows rhythm sequences, studio rehearsals, large stages and character creation. Players also grow a fan community on social media, and the publisher says that as performances increase popularity, the player must manage that community.

What the critic objected to
The Push Square piece is a reaction, not a review. Barker says the trailer’s customization and rhythm focus do not make up for a visual style he finds low budget and lacking the flair and personality he associates with K-pop. He compares the look to a Roblox level. Those are his opinions of trailer footage, and they should be read as such.

- Explore and fight in a story-based campaign to save America
The visual complaint
The argument rests on how the game looks in a trailer, which is a curated showcase. Barker’s central point is that the presentation does not capture the energy of K-pop performance. Whether the final game’s visuals match the trailer is something no source reviewed here confirms either way.
The premise he finds appealing
Barker also recognizes a potentially strong premise: a rise from wannabe to stardom, with the choice to play as a soloist or in a group, and co-op included. He says the game seems targeted at a younger audience, and he presents that as his own read of the material.

What this criticism can and cannot tell you
A trailer-based reaction is useful for judging whether the presentation matches your taste. It cannot tell you how the rhythm gameplay feels, how difficult the sections are, how well the customization tools work or whether the career progression holds attention over several hours. No hands-on testing has been reported. Barker has said he may review the game later, and a full verdict on gameplay and visuals should wait for that kind of evidence.
PS5 details worth checking
The official PlayStation Store listing for the PS5 version describes one to three players, offline play and DualSense vibration. Its soundtrack description calls the music “100% K-pop” and original. That phrasing is storefront copy and is not an independent assessment of the songs. Store information is regional, and the listing’s pricing and purchase terms are specific to the Turkish storefront, so check your own regional store before assuming a price or availability.

- Hire the perfect employees to deal with a variety of life events
- Control everything that happens in your park, from what your animals eat to what eats your animals…
- Decide whether you want to run your Zoo above board... or break the law and pocket the extra cash
- DualSense vibration is listed as a feature of the PS5 version. A DualSense controller is an optional accessory for that feature, not a stated requirement to play.
- No physical edition is established by the sources reviewed. The available information points to digital release on the listed platforms.
- Licensed songs are not confirmed in the sources; the “original” claim is the storefront’s wording.
Should you wait or buy?
The answer depends on what you want from the game. The decision is easier if you check the following points before November 5, 2026:
- If the trailer’s visual style puts you off, the critic’s reaction suggests the game may not match your expectations, but the final build may differ from the trailer.
- If you want a character-creation and career-building game more than a polished performance showcase, the announced feature list matches that interest.
- If you plan to play with friends, confirm that your platform supports the two-friend co-op described by the publisher, since the storefront listing reports player counts but not the exact co-op setup.
- If you care most about gameplay feel, wait for hands-on coverage. The current evidence describes the game’s plans, not how it plays.
For a fan of K-pop who is not sure about the trailer’s look, the strongest reason to hold off is that the only critical judgment so far is based on a short showcase.
Pricing, preorder terms and regional availability are not covered here, as they vary by storefront.
