Webb never resolved a surface or cloud band: the result came from tiny, wavelength-specific brightness changes in one unresolved point of light as the object rotated.
What JWST actually measured
Webb’s NIRSpec and MIRI instruments monitored SIMP 0136 through two complete rotations in July 2023. Because the object is unresolved in JWST images, the telescope recorded a time-varying spectrum rather than a direct picture. Different wavelengths brightened and dimmed by different amounts as successive sides rotated into view.

Those changes carry information about several atmospheric layers. Variations at wavelengths formed deeper in the atmosphere track changes in cloud cover; other parts of the spectrum reveal temperature changes higher up and shifts in carbon chemistry. The measurement is therefore a form of rotational weather mapping: scientists infer atmospheric structure from how the combined light changes with time.

Each spectrum is the total light from the visible hemisphere at that instant. As SIMP 0136 rotates, regions with different temperatures and cloud heights contribute different proportions of that total. Comparing spectra taken throughout the rotation exposes repeating patterns that would be invisible in a single snapshot.

Principal component analysis
The team applied principal component analysis, or PCA, to the sequence of spectra. PCA reorganizes many wavelength measurements into a smaller set of statistically dominant patterns. In this case, most of the changing signal can be represented by two physical components: temperature and the vertical structure of clouds.
Combining those components revealed three recurring atmospheric states. PCA is a way to identify the dominant structures in the data; it does not by itself produce a resolved map or replace detailed atmospheric physics models.

The three recurring weather states
| Weather state | Temperature and cloud signature | What astronomers see in the spectrum |
|---|---|---|
| Hot, thin-cloud regime | Relatively hotter regions with clouds concentrated lower in the atmosphere or present in smaller amounts | Brightness changes consistent with warmer atmospheric emission and reduced high-altitude cloud opacity |
| Cool, high-cloud regime | Cooler regions with thicker clouds extending higher above the atmosphere | Wavelength-dependent dimming caused by elevated cloud layers and cooler temperatures |
| Transition regime | Intermediate mixtures in which the hotter/thinner and cooler/thicker structures interact | A blended spectrum between the two dominant atmospheric patterns |
These are statistical atmospheric endmembers, not three sharply bordered locations. Every observed spectrum combines light from multiple longitudes and latitudes, so a rotation phase does not correspond to a pure single-region spectrum. The three labels describe recurring combinations of temperature and cloud structure in the integrated light.

The patterns persist, even as details evolve
The dominant drivers remain recognizable for more than a dozen rotations, according to lead author Merle Schrader of Trinity College Dublin. The detailed appearance of the atmosphere changes over that interval, but the underlying temperature-and-cloud framework continues to explain most of the variability.

“We also discovered that these drivers of the weather patterns on SIMP 0136 persist over time, even as the detailed appearance of the atmosphere evolves over more than a dozen rotations,” Schrader said in an explanation reported by EarthSky on 29 September 2026.
That persistence is important because it separates a durable atmospheric organization from short-lived changes in individual cloud features. It does not mean the object has a fixed forecast or that the same cloud pattern remains in exactly the same place.

What SIMP 0136 is—and is not
SIMP 0136 is an isolated planetary-mass object in the constellation Pisces. NASA describes it as roughly 13 times the mass of Jupiter, about 1,100 kelvins (825°C), and approximately 20 light-years from Earth. It is often called a brown dwarf because it does not orbit a star.

Since SIMP 0136 is not gravitationally bound to a host star, NASA says it is not technically an exoplanet, even though its mass and atmospheric physics resemble those of giant exoplanets.

Why an unresolved object is still a useful laboratory
Brown dwarfs emit their own infrared light and can be observed without the glare of a nearby star. That makes them accessible laboratories for studying the temperature, clouds and chemistry expected in giant-planet atmospheres. The same physical processes can be difficult to isolate in a planet-star system, where the star overwhelms much of the planet’s light.
Trinity associate professor Johanna Vos said the PCA approach can rapidly identify the dominant atmospheric components before computationally intensive modeling begins. In practice, that makes PCA a model-selection and prioritization step: it tells researchers which structures deserve detailed radiative-transfer and circulation calculations.
Can astronomers forecast weather on other planets yet?
Not in the everyday sense of predicting tomorrow’s cloud cover. This observation characterizes recurring atmospheric regimes in unresolved, disk-integrated light. It does not provide a local map, a wind-speed measurement or an operational forecast for a specific longitude.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- What is established: temperature and cloud vertical structure account for most of the observed variability in the July 2023 spectra.
- What persists: those dominant drivers remain present across more than a dozen rotations, while the detailed atmospheric appearance changes.
- What remains unresolved: the telescope does not distinguish individual cloud cells or assign each statistical state to a sharply defined surface region.
- What comes next: applying the same decomposition to additional brown dwarfs and giant exoplanets can test whether persistent temperature-cloud patterns are common.
As Schrader put it, the result shows that astronomers can infer “intimate weather patterns” from a single pixel spread across a spectrum. The achievement is not a photograph of a distant storm; it is the extraction of repeatable atmospheric structure from the changing light of an unresolved world.
